Chapter 2: The Stranger’s Message A week later, a letter arrived at their coastal home—sealed with dark wax stamped with a strange, twisted crest they had never seen before. There was no return address, only a single sheet of thick, heavy paper written in elegant, looping script: You thought you had rewritten fate. You thought a mistake and a moment of kindness could undo what was woven into blood and bone long before you were born. But destiny is not so easily changed. The door you opened once… can be opened again. And when it swings wide, you will learn the truth: what you found was never yours to keep. Damian read the words twice, his jaw tightening until the muscle jumped. He crushed the letter gently in his hand, his knuckles turning white. “It is them,” he said quietly, his voice low and sharp. “The rival branch. The ones who lost everything when Gabriel was born. They never truly went away. They have been watching. Waiting.” That same afternoon, Gabriel wandered into the study where Aliyah sat painting, and tugged gently at her skirt. “Mama? The door… it is calling again. It wants you to come back.” Aliyah knelt down, taking both his small hands in hers, her heart hammering in her chest. “What door, sweetheart? What do you mean?” “The door you opened when you were sad,” he answered simply, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “It stands in the dark, and it says… come back and finish what you started.” She stood up quickly, finding Damian. They looked at each other, fear and understanding rising between them. The hotel—the very place where they had met—was being renovated, turned into a grand heritage resort. And the owners? Records showed it had been bought quietly by a holding company linked directly to that same distant, bitter branch of the Vance family. “They are building something there,” Damian said, his voice steady but grave, his fingers tapping the old journal on the desk. “They are turning our beginning… into a trap.” Aliyah touched the silver star locket at her neck, the one she had worn every single day since that night. “Then we must go,” she said firmly, meeting his gaze. “We cannot hide from it. We cannot run. If this is where it all began… this is where we must end it.”
