EVELYN The guard, seemingly realizing Leila’s identity and status at last, widened his eyes in panic and swiftly dipped his head. “My Lady,” he said with reverence. “Please forgive me for my rudeness.” Leila studied the guard and Elsa with a cold frown. “It was indeed very rude of you,” she said. “You just asked for my intention, and now I must know yours.” Her gaze slid to Elsa. “I believe you’re Jasmine’s personal maid, aren’t you? What are you two doing here?” Elsa swallowed and fidgeted with her fingers, casting me a pleading glance—half-ashamed to be caught with a guard, half-expecting me to speak up for her. She knew very well that if Leila chose to, she could inform Mrs. Porter about Elsa’s misbehavior—meeting secretly with a palace guard—and get her expelled from the palace
