Amara’s POV
I had figured out the truth already, since the rumors were too obvious to hear. Alpha Caspian had found his true destined mate long ago, an unremarkable Omega by name of Selene. But, apparently, he had refused her and discarded her in order to make this fake alliance with me.
“We must not forget that this union was not made in good faith my lady,” His voice was as icy as ever as he spoke, as if he was talking about some business deal instead of proposing to me. “And rejecting you now would cause great commotion between our packs, which would not be beneficial to either of us.”
His words twisted my heart, but I felt so angry and disappointed, all I wanted was just a tiny bit of humanity from the man, but apparently, I was mistaken.
“Indeed,” I replied, surprising myself with the boldness of my voice. “For if you cast me aside, I would have nowhere to go. No one would accept me as their mate if I was tossed away by my own mate. So, let us make a truce between us.”
I moved the hand that he still grasped in his palm and he finally loosened his grip. In the short time we stood face to face, gazing into each other’s eyes, it felt as if we were complete strangers forced together by circumstances beyond our control.
“Make a truce? What kind of truce?” Caspian questioned sharply.
I straightened my back, offended by his forwardness. “That you go on your way and I go on mine. As long as I do my duty as the Luna and do not bring dishonor to the pack, you will leave me be and do not interfere with my personal matters.”
He blinked several times, a hint of amusement crossing over his features before his expression hardened again. “So, you want me to get out of your way.”
“Is it not the same that you want? To forget me, so that you can carry on with your life and remember only Selene, the Omega you cast aside.”
It dawned on me just how bold I was being, but nevertheless, those words left my mouth without a second thought. Caspian’s eyes darkened ominously and for one brief moment, I felt like he was furious enough to kill me on the spot.
“That is none of your concern,” He hissed, his voice low and menacing.
“Oh, but it is my concern,” I shot back, raising my chin defiantly. “That if you act this way towards me, it will bring great dishonor to me as the Luna, which, in turn, will bring dishonor to this pack as well. So, forgive me if I am being rude, but I will not be cast aside like some insignificant Omega!”
He seemed surprised by my outburst, but quickly recovered and narrowed his eyes at me, a strange look of distaste crossing over his angular features. “You talk as if your position as Luna grants you any power or authority over me.”
With that, he turned on his heel and stormed out, not giving me a second glance.
As soon as the door shut behind him, I collapsed to the floor, my heart pounding wildly in my chest. I could feel the connection we shared, the bond of fate that linked us together as mates and because of that, he was killing me slowly with every word he said to me. I felt so weak, and defeated, and for the first time since our meeting, I allowed the tears of despair to fall.
I cannot take this anymore…
As I laid on the floor, drowning in self pity, Caspian stood just outside the door, hearing every word I had said. He had stopped in his tracks just outside of my room when he heard my sobs and he almost went back in, hearing how broken I was, but he quickly shook the thought away. He had more pressing matters at hand, and as soon as he returned to his chambers, he would leave for his Alpha meeting and the city again.
I had fallen asleep shortly after, missing lunch time completely, but I woke up a few hours later for dinner. When I got up, I was groggy and my head throbbed painfully. I sent Helena to get me some food and water.
“You look awful, my Lady.” Helena said bluntly as she placed the tray down in front of me, showing no compassion whatsoever. “Even worse than usual.”
“Thank you,” I replied dryly. “Tell Brynne to bring me a bath as well.”
As soon as she left the room, it did not take long for the delicious scent of lavender to waft past my nose and fill the room. I sighed in content as I slid into the warm water. It felt so good, in fact, that I almost fell asleep right there.
“Shall I bring you some more hot water, my Lady?” Brynne asked as she entered the room.
“Please,” I murmured, my eyes slowly closing as I leaned my head back.
I had fallen asleep in the tub, and I was blissfully unaware that two hours had passed. All of the sudden, I felt a searing pain across my upper body as boiling water cascaded down my chest and over my shoulders. I gasped loudly in surprise, unable to scream due to the pain.
“Not again!” Helena and Brynne shrieked. “Oh no! What have I done?! Help! We need help!”
I curled in on myself, covering my private parts with my hands as I trembled violently. “No… no, please stop…” I moaned softly, feeling so ashamed and embarrassed. “Do not bring the guards…”
But, they did not listen to me. “Guards! Get over here!”
I could not stop them. They were coming closer and closer until finally, the guards opened the door, surprised to see me in such a state. They halted right outside the door, uncertain what to do.
“Step inside! Hurry up now!” Brynne urged them.
“No… no please…” I whispered, already seeing the look of surprise and disgust on the guards’ faces. I could not bear to have anyone else see me like this, especially the guards.
Their boots neared the edge of the tub and as one, they stepped inside, prepared to inspect me to see what had happened to cause such a commotion.
