CHAPTER 1: THE BOND OF BITTERNESS
Amara’s POV
My breathing was uneven as the feeling of pleasure mixed with the pain in my body. I struggled to free myself from his grip while his teeth bit my neck. All of that hurt so much, and I wanted to escape, but the more I struggled, the tighter his grip became. I gasped in pain.
"It hurts..." I whimpered. My skin was wet and slippery, and I felt so tired. I tried to push him away, to tell him that I wanted him to be gentle, but he took it for an attempt to resist. His movements grew more forceful, and I had a feeling he had taken my struggle for consent. I never knew that it would feel this awful. At least, in the old pack, I was used to the strict discipline. But now, I had a strange sensation that someone had bitten me deep into the bone. It was as if he was trying to devour the whole part of my skin with his mouth. But why did it hurt so much?
It lasted for ages, but eventually, he released me. He took his hands from my neck and pulled out from me. I felt so weak and helpless that I could barely watch him walking to the corner of the room to clean himself, my legs barely supporting my body. I tried to listen to his words, but the words made no sense to me. My eyes grew heavy, and I fell asleep almost immediately.
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was that the other side of the bed was empty. Caspian was already gone. I waited for him to return, but he did not return in the morning or the afternoon. It was the second day when I started to feel lonely.
"It has been a week," I murmured to myself while looking at the dark red spot on my neck. When Helena, the head maid, came to my ward to tell me that she brought breakfast, I decided to ask her about Caspian.
"Have you seen the Alpha? Do you know where he is?" I asked. Helena barely gave me a look as she put the plate on the table. Her face showed no particular emotion. Perhaps, she never was a good actress, but her body language made it clear that she did not want to hear about the Alpha.
"The Alpha has his own duties," she said, showing me her cold shoulder. "It does not seem that he will have much spare time to waste on his mate."
"Is there any other reason why he cannot see me?" I inquired, "Or is it that important for him to waste his time on something more important than his own mate?"
The other maid, Brynne, muttered something low under her breath and immediately glanced at me. I caught the word "chosen one," but she quickly pulled her gaze away, looking ashamed. I could read the disgust in her expression. It was the same feeling that was on Helena's face. I guess the whole household did not want me there with them. I knew that I could not make them care about me, so I only gave a small smile.
"Thank you," I said and dismissed the maids. I preferred to be alone rather than be treated like this.
It took about a month for me to see him again. He entered the room like a king, and I had no idea what to make of this sudden visit. I thought maybe he came to me because he felt guilty about leaving me all that time alone. It turned out that he did not. In fact, he barely spared a glance in my direction. He acted as if I was not even worth his attention. I learned later that he was gone on some expedition along with several pack members. Again, no one bothered to inform me of his return. It was as if I did not even matter to them.
I got up immediately when I saw him. My legs were weak, and I barely stood still.
"Where were you all the time?" I asked, struggling to keep my voice even. He did not give an immediate answer. He walked past me toward the bathing chamber, not giving me any attention. I stepped up to him and grabbed his arm.
"We need to talk," I said.
He turned to me, narrowing his eyes, a low growl rumbling in his throat. He looked at me as if I was dirt on his shoe.
"Do not be stupid and block my way," he growled. "I can move you with a simple spell.“I don’t care,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest, "You marked me, so I have every right to know where you were all the time. I have an equal claim to you, Caspian."
"Everyone in this pack already knows where I was," he said with an arrogant smirk. "Does it not bother you that you are so ignorant of the things happening around you?"
"Everyone is not always well-informed," I replied. "I did not know either. No one is willing to tell me about anything."
He looked me up and down, a disgusting look on his face.
"You are such a liar," he said. He tried to push me away, but I held his hand firmly, squeezing it. He winced in pain, and I could immediately feel how painful my hand was. In one flash, his hand was on my wrist, squeezing it painfully.
"Let us be clear, Caspian," I said, forcing back the tears. "Why do you treat me this way? Why do you behave as if I am the lowest of your subjects?"
His eyes narrowed, and he moved closer to me so that our faces were almost touching. His voice was dark, almost venomous.
"We both know that this was not some magical love spell." His lips twisted into a cruel smile. "This was all a business arrangement, Amara. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you have come to some rightful claim of yours."
"If you do not want me, you could have refused," I said, my voice trembling.
"Refuse?" He laughed, but there was no mirth in his voice. "It is not that simple, Amara. You and I both know that political ties are not broken so easily. Believe me, I would have had nothing to do with the Silvervein Pack if it were up to me. My destiny was with the girl of the lowest rank of our pack, but it seems that she does not have the royal blood in her veins." He smiled bitterly. "That is why I chose you."
That was when it all made sense to me. Caspian and I did not meet by chance. Our families did not force us to marry each other because they thought we were meant for each other. No, there was some other reason why I was pushed into this marriage.
Caspian was a proud Alpha of the Shadowpeak Pack, one of the strongest in the kingdom. The young prince, second in line for the throne, was determined to inherit the thrown of the entire kingdom. But none of that would have been possible if he was not forced to marry a rich and influential heiress from the Silvervein Pack, the most economically powerful pack in the country. It would seem that this was all a match made for convenience. I was only a piece in the greater game played between the packs, and apparently, there was another woman he preferred to be with all along.
Perhaps, he truly loved that Omega girl, Selene. No one could blame him for choosing her. After all, she was his destined mate. But her lowly status made her unworthy of becoming the Queen, so he had to choose me instead. And perhaps, I was not supposed to love him, either. That was why he treated me so poorly. After all, what was the point in keeping a mistress when he could not have his beloved Selene?
Perhaps, the whole household of the Shadowpeak Pack had the same opinion about me. That was why no one was ever willing to accept me there. All these things were slowly coming together to break my heart.
