Chapter1
Kathy yawned for the third time in less than ten minutes, but she clenched her jaw and shook her head. Sleep was the last thing she could afford tonight. Her study target loomed over her like a silent threat, and she refused to give in.
“You need to rest,” Xavier said softly, his eyes scanning her face with that familiar mix of amusement and concern.
“I’m fine,” she replied, though her voice was a little hoarse. “I just… don’t want to stop yet. Can we take a walk? Just for a bit. It’ll help me stay awake.”
He smiled, that easy, heart-stopping smile, and fell into step beside her.
The night air was cool, tinged with the faint scent of the campus gardens. Lamp posts cast a golden glow along the walkway, their light dancing across the quiet path. They were on their third round now, having circled the same stretch twice before, talking about everything and nothing — music, silly campus rumors, and jokes that made her laugh despite her tiredness.
Kathy laughed quietly at one of Xavier’s jokes, and for a moment, she forgot about her exhaustion, forgot about her worries, even forgot about Nelson. Her heart picked up in an unfamiliar rhythm as she realized she had been walking a little closer to him than necessary.
Xavier’s gaze lingered on her, warm and steady, and she felt a shiver run down her spine. There was a softness in his eyes that made it hard to think clearly, a presence that demanded attention even when she tried not to notice.
They slowed their pace. The conversation faded naturally as silence settled between them. Not an awkward silence — something heavier, more electric, like the air itself had paused just for them.
Kathy’s heart hammered. She could feel it in her chest, a rapid, erratic beat that threatened to betray her composure. Xavier stepped just a little closer. She could see the faint curl of his smile, the way his eyes softened when they met hers.
“Are you… okay?” he asked quietly.
She swallowed, her throat dry. “Yeah… just… tired.”
He nodded slowly, but didn’t step back. And that’s when she felt it — the almost imperceptible brush of his hand against hers, the heat of his body so close, the way his gaze seemed to reach inside her.
Her breath caught. She could feel the tension coil in her stomach, winding tighter with every heartbeat. Part of her wanted to lean in, wanted to close the space between them and see what happened. But another part — the part that loved Nelson, that valued loyalty and the life she had built — pushed her back.
She took a shaky step to the side, breaking the moment before it could fully consume them. Xavier’s eyes flickered, a mixture of disappointment and understanding, and he gave her a small, reassuring smile.
“Alright,” he said softly. “Walk with me a little more?”
Kathy nodded, heart still racing, and fell back into step beside him. The night continued around them, but the world had subtly shifted — something unspoken had passed between them, leaving her dizzy, aware, and dangerously aware of what could happen if she let herself go any further.
*Flashback*
It had all started months ago on a sunny afternoon during her physical screening for the school. Kathy was walking through the campus car park with her friends — Zoe, Lila, and Amara — a pile of books clutched in her arms, when a voice called her name.
She paused with Zoe, while Lila and Amara stayed a few steps ahead, curious. Turning back, they saw a young man jogging toward them, a friendly smile on his face.
“My name is Nelson,” he said when he reached her. “Nice to meet you. Can I get yours?”
Kathy blinked. She wasn’t in the mood for strangers today — the last thing she needed after a stressful day was a guy stopping her.
“And why should I tell you my name?” she asked, folding her arms.
Nelson didn’t falter. “I saw you coming from a distance and… I couldn’t take my eyes off you. You’re beautiful.”
Lila and Amara exchanged mischievous grins, while Zoe gave a small knowing smile. They subtly stepped back, giving Kathy the privacy to handle the interaction.
Kathy froze for a moment — not out of shyness, but mild annoyance. “What do you want?” she asked.
“Just your number,” Nelson replied casually. “So we can talk later. I promise not to delay you or your friends.”
Kathy hesitated, weighing the interaction. Finally, she gave him her number, determined she wouldn’t respond to his texts.
That night, back home, she glanced at her phone to see a message from him. She ignored it for a while, but curiosity won. When she replied, he responded instantly, as if he had been waiting.
And that’s how it began — Nelson, persistent yet patient, slowly carving his way into her heart.
*Present*
Back in the present, Kathy’s heart was still racing from the almost-kiss with Xavier. Walking side by side, laughing and teasing, she felt the dangerous pull of two worlds:
Nelson — her history, her loyalty, her “safe choice.”
Xavier — the excitement, the attention, the temptation she didn’t know she could feel.
The campus was quiet, but inside her, a storm had just begun.
And somewhere deep down, Kathy knew — her heart was about to be tested in ways she wasn’t ready for.
