“Mate” he growled, and every male wolf here stiffened, half aware of what just happened, and then others that hadn’t processed it yet “alpha” the man who defended me, broke the silence first.
Red urged me to go to our mate, but I stayed still till the threat to our pups was gone, scared of the man who stood in front of me. A growl rumbled in my chest, warning off the males, I wasn’t on pack territory but on the edge of the pack lines; they had no authority over this part of the land.
Lowering my body to an inch over the ground, not in submission but in caution, ears tipped back clearly showing my emotions as I bared my teeth, mate or alpha, I didn’t want any man near my pups. The man in front of me frowned in defense toward him “shift” he asked, waiting as his request was denied, causing his wolf to push forward, not understanding why his mate denied him.
That's the thing, I wasn’t rejecting him, just not ready to open my heart to a male, Red scratched at the wall in my head, barking, demanding to know why I didn’t go to our mate “because I’m scared! I’m scared for my pups, that he will reject me when he realizes I had another man's pups and that I am used goods.” I nearly cried out to her, making her freeze at my words, lowering her body to the ground in my head.
The alpha paced in front of my den, back and forth, waiting for me to come out and talk to him, to shift. I still saw the many men’s faces in my head at night when I slept, still felt their dirty hands on my body when they r***d me and bit into my skin leaving their marks. My body shook at the memory, whimpers leaving my throat as I wrapped my body around my pups for comfort and to protect them. Mirelle woke and made her presence known by a soft squeak rolling off her brother Aaren before aimlessly climbing up my tail, catching the alpha’s attention as he stopped and looked at the moving ball of fur on my tail until it clicked.
“Pups” he almost whispered with realization.
Watching him watch my pup, he got on his knees to watch from a safe distance for my sake as Aaren searched for his sister, a light call as he nudged my stomach with his nose, my nose touched the top of his head as Mirelle rolled off my tail. Leaning forward, I gently grabbed her by the scruff with my teeth to place her with Aaren, who immediately crawled towards her when she was close enough to him. “Love, I would never hurt you or your pups.. Will you give me a chance to prove that? That I mean no harm to you?” he asked voice laced with sincerity. “Can we try?” Red reached out with her nose to caress my mind as I looked at him again, looking for anything that would prove my fears right, but I didn’t find anything but concern and sincerity.
With a sigh, I nodded, making him smile when he realized I replied, “Okay, I’m gonna go get you some food, will that be okay?” he kept eye contact as I looked at my earlier kill that was now dirty and mangled, with another nod he got up and took the rabbit with him.
I watched as the group of males started to head back to pack lands on their alpha’s orders, leaving me with my pups to clean and tend to my wounds that started to mend slowly. My stomach growled, making its presence known and unheard as I tended to my children, cleaning them and making sure they were fed. The sound of shuffling woke me from my nap as the legs of a brown wolf that I recognized as my mate pulled a deer close to the den, setting it down before moving to lie in front of the opening with a wolfie smile as his wolf lightly pawed at the ground.
Slowly, I crawled out of the den to look at the full-size deer that he as caught for me, his eyes never leaving me as he crawled against the ground towards his kill, his wolf pawed at it before turning back to me, then at the kill again. He let out a whine before lying down with his head on his paws as I hesitantly came out of my safe space. Walking with my body low to the ground, keeping my eyes on him to make sure he stayed in my eyesight, before sniffing the deer, making my mouth water.
He was an alpha, and any alpha was always the first to eat their kill, but he was letting me eat before him. Licking my lips before I tore and ate at the meat, keeping an eye on him as he lay away from the den in the same position he was in when I came out, watching me with a slight sway of his tail. Once I was finished, I tucked my tail and ran back in the hole, and he didn’t oppose, just lay a few feet away until I would come out.
For the next few days, it was the same thing: I would wake up to him bringing an animal he caught, watch me eat, and the pups while they nursed before going back to sleep. He would do it again in the afternoon or follow me to the nearest water source and back, and at night, he would sleep outside to keep us safe. This went on for two more weeks, where I was getting comfortable enough to let him get close to the den and be around him, where the pup's eyes opened, then they started to crawl, explore the den after they ate, and play together.
The sun peeked through the bushes as my mate, who I learned his name was Brandon, peeked his nose through the bush before pulling away and lying down. “Lucy, are you awake?” he asked through the link that we opened up a few days ago, I was still getting comfortable around him, a part of me wanted to run, to hide, even when he gave no reason to do so. “Yeah, I’m awake.” I thought towards him before climbing out of the den with my highly energized pups on my heels.
Aaren wobbled after his sister, playfully nipping at her back paws, making her turn around and paw at him. It is cute.
Brandon walked over to me, touching his nose to my cheek to greet me “good morning”. The ice has fully melted along with the last bit of snow, a few days away before falling into a new season. Brandon's wolf was larger than mine, as my head came under his chin, it didn’t bother me or my wolf as Brandon sat beside me, our fur barely touching but the shock of the mate pull was still there. “Lucy, will you come live on the pack lands? My wolf and I don’t feel comfortable with our mate staying outside the pack lands where rogues are getting restless, testing the neighboring packs to see how far they can get.” His wolf whined anxiously, watching for my reaction.
Before I could respond, he shot up from his spot, looking around before turning to me, nudging my shoulder to the den “Get the pups and go back inside” He growled protectively, making me jump up alert. “Why's, what's wrong?” I quickly moved to where my playful pups were, nudging and picking one up at a time to bring them to the safety of the den. “There’s a rogue attack, stay in the den and don’t come out till I come back for you, the pack warriors have been alerted.” Brandon licked my cheek once we were in the den, then took off towards where the rogues were.
My wolf whined after her mate while moving the pups deeper in the den for safety, I lowered my body in the entrance of the den to watch for any threat. The hairs on the back of my neck stood as I sniffed the air to see if I could pick up any smells of rogues, my nails digging in the dirt under my paws as time slowly went by until the sound of ruffling came from behind my den. Perking up as Mirelle and Aaren pawed at the back of my legs, I turned and licked their heads to tell them it's okay before crawling out of the den.
Sniffing the air again, I circled the stump, my body lowered before I found the source of the noise as I came face to face with a grey male rogue wolf as he turned towards me with his teeth showing in clear anger on his fur-covered face. Growling, I stood taller, snapping my teeth at him before our bodies slammed into each other, with teeth and nails grabbing at each other. I could feel his teeth and nails digging into my sides with the intent to kill, but my bite was harder as I broke his arm with my teeth, drawing a yelp from him.
The sounds of whimpers made me swing my head around to the opening of my den, where a rogue held my pup under his paw. With a deep growl, I snapped the neck of the rogue that was under me before running to the other rogue, slamming my body into him before he could do anything else, snapping and tearing at his body until he got a safe distance away, looking at my pup that was bleeding by her brother. Looking back at the enemy that was still down before racing to my pup mid shift as my bones broke and shifted back to the size of my human bones, the dirty blonde hair of my wolf fading under my now naked skin as I scooped up my pups.
“Brandon!” I yelled down the mate bond, pulling the invisible string as hard as I could before taking off in a run towards his pack land, not caring for the blood pouring down my naked body as the rogue started to get up. “Lucy, what’s wrong?” He replied worryingly as I huffed, not used to my human form since it's been almost four months since I was last turned.
I could not carry two pups at the same time in my wolf form, they did not have the strength to run that long. I could only get the words “Rogues” down the bond before jumping to the side to avoid the seething wolf that tried to ram into me, making sure the pups stayed to my chest, I kicked the wolf in the head with a grunt before continuing my run at full speed “I know pups, its okay I got you” my words were rasped as the last bit of the cold air stung my throat.
“I’m coming, mate, where are you?” he rushed out down the mental bond, my eyes looking around to find something that he would know “I ran onto the pack lands, Mirelle-” Teeth made contact with the back of my leg as a pained scream escaped my lips, shifting the shaking pups into one arm I grabbed a stick and shoved it as hard as I could into the neck of the wolf making him let go of my thigh.
Trying to run despite the pain as growls and whines came from the wolf behind me, using his paw to scratch out the stick that was previously lodged in his throat, before he was tackled by a large, angry brown wolf. Snapping and tearing at any skin he could get, it was Brandon; he was here.
The rogue fought back against the alpha, grabbing at his fur in an attempt to pull the larger wolf down, but the alpha wasn’t having it; he wanted blood, and that's what he got. He held down the rogue with his paw, tearing out his throat with a growl as I turned my pups away from the sight as they gripped my chest with soft cries, I ran my hand up and down their backs softly “Its okay, momma is here” I soothes almost instantly catching the attention of the alpha in front of me.
His eyes looked over my naked and bloodied human form before looking up at the shaking pups in my arms, to my face, before shifting “my pup.” I was wrapping my head around everything that just happened, the shock and fear hitting me like a train. Brandon stalked over to me, pulling me into his arms with a growl, kissing the side of my head as he let out a shaking breath, turning his attention to my injured pup, Mirelle. “It’s not deep, but let's get her to the pack doctor to make sure there’s no other damage” He said turning to the tree on my left to grab some shorts and a large T-shirt helping me put it on before slipping on the shorts himself, scooping me up in his arms being mindful of my injuries.
“It is okay now, Love, I got you and the pups” he said softly while quickly making his way deeper into pack lands.
