As the time drew near, he gave us our instructions: “This is as close as I can figure it—” he said, “this two-hundred-foot circle. If we’re lucky and things go well at the other end, the tunnel will show here in three minutes. I want you to stand about a hundred feet apart—just there, Pete, for you. And, Bob, you stand over there. You’ve got your equipment and you’re all set. When you see the ring—start running, both of you. Dive into it. I’ll follow later. Wait for me wherever you land.” Pete
