The light tone of the conversation shifted as Samantha waited just a second too long with her answer.
Lilith leaned away. “You are?”
“I wasn’t, no.” Sam replied, hating herself for the thoughts roaming through her head. “But now that you’ve brought it up...”
“Why didn’t you just ask?”
“I guess I’m not used to people answering my questions truthfully so I’ve got used to finding out for myself.”
“Are you talking about your job or your ex-wife?”
Samantha snorted. “Both.”
“You don’t have to worry about that with me,” Lilith said, stepping away so she could reach for her coffee again.
