chapter 1
I paced nervously around the cramped room, the weight of the silence pressing down on me like a stone. The clock on the wall seemed to mock me, its cold face shining under the dim light. Two-thirty. Past two in the morning. My dad still wasn’t home. God, this wasn’t new—he always came in late, stumbling through the door smelling like a rotten mix of booze and desperation, the worst part worse some nights than others. He always lost everything on bets he never should have made. But tonight… tonight felt heavier, darker. My eyes kept twitching uncontrollably, like some cruel warning from the inside out. My mind refused to settle, spinning in endless loops of ‘what ifs’ and bad scenarios I didn’t want to face. I slid my trembling fingers over the screen of my phone and dialed his number again, heart racing so fast my breaths came shallow and sharp. Straight to voicemail. It was like the cold emptiness inside the room had crept into my chest. Shit. What was going on? Suddenly, a faint sound pierced the silence—footsteps outside, heavy and deliberate, scuffing close to the door. Too close, damned too close. Before I could move, before fear could even claw its way fully awake, the door exploded inward with a deafening crash that made my ears ring. Splinters flew like shrapnel. Five massive men filled the threshold, their bulk swallowing the narrow frame of the doorway. Faces blank and emotionless, eyes dead and cold like glass shards. They didn’t say a word. They didn’t need to. My heart lurched, slammed against my ribs, then seized up cold inside my chest. I forced myself to look up. And there he was. My dad. A mess of blood and bruises. His face was soaked, dripping with blood that smeared down his cheeks and neck in long dark streaks. His skin looked torn and raw in places, the bone underneath crushed in brutal angles. His eyes were half-lidded, glassy, bleeding shadows of the man I knew. My blood ran cold. My lips trembled, barely willing to break the silence with a sound. “Da… dad?” I stumbled forward, tears burning hot and salt-raw in my eyes. I fell beside him, grabbing his arms, trembling on the edge of collapse. “Why do you have him?” The words tumbled out, harsh and desperate. “What did you do to him? Dad… what’s wrong? Please, tell me.” Tears streamed freely down my face, bitter and helpless. He was a rotton gambler and a drunk. A man who threw every chance away. But he was still my only family. My only connection to a life that felt like it was falling apart. Then the silence shattered with a voice—cold, sharp as shattered glass, cutting into the room. I looked up. The man standing before me was nightmare made flesh—like some dark Greek god cloaked in black, towering. His arms were iron bands of muscle, his face pale and cruel, impossible to read. He was the biggest mafia boss in the city, the kind of man that made grown men white with fear. “Your dad owes fifty million dollars,” he said flatly, voice low and unyielding. My entire body froze. Fifty million. The number hung heavy in the air, massive and unreal. I barely understood what it meant. There was no way to come up with that kind of money in a lifetime, no matter how hard I worked. I swallowed the lump that stuck in my throat, my vision swimming with tears. “I… I need my money now,” I stammered, the words tasting wrong, bitter. “Sir, please,” I begged, voice trembling and breaking under the weight of fear. “I don’t have that kind of cash. Just give me time. I promise I’ll pay you back.” His eyes locked on mine like twin bullets, cold and unforgiving. “Either you pay that money this instant,” he said slowly, deadly, “or—” “Sir, please,” I begged again, panic spreading through my veins. “Please try to understand. There’s nothing valuable here, no way to cover that debt.” The cruel smirk that twisted his lips froze me solid. “Well,” he said, voice dripping with venom, “luckily for us, your dear father used you as collateral.” The words hit like a punch. Ice water filled my veins. I looked down at my father, at the broken lines of his face bathed in blood. I was the collateral. The price he’d given. I felt sick. His cruel smile deepened, shadows playing on his hard features. “I have to say, you’re going to make us a lot of money.” “No,” I said, shaking my head violently, stepping back, tears slipping faster now. “No, I won’t go. I have dreams, a life. I’m not a damn pawn.” “Amira,” the voice came again, deadly calm, slicing through the thick silence. “It’s either you accept... or he dies.” The gun in his hand clicked as it pressed cold and unforgiving against my father’s temple. My world shattered in that moment. The past and future blurred into a twisted nightmare. I was caught between a man dying with blood sliding down his face and a monster telling me my fate was damned. I wanted to scream. To fight. To tear everything down around me. But there was nothing. Only that gun, that cold voice, that sick weight of debt. And me—trapped, used, a hostage for a debt I never made.
