Andrew POV-
I’m in the back seat of my brother’s Range Rover. I hear both of my brothers in the front bickering back and forth about pack politics and what this death may expose. I’m not worried about it. I know Alsie will protect the pack at all costs. She may work in the human world, but her heart is one hundred percent team Far-Side Moon Pack.
I’m halfway listening to these two knuckleheads go at it. I prefer watching the scenery from my window. I keep thinking about the way Alsie calmed me, the way she felt pressed up against me. It was a weird feeling, not the sparks you hear when others talk about the mate bond, but a more calming warmth that flowed through me. The warm feeling started in my chest, then spread all the way to the tips of my fingers, down my legs and out my toes. Everything around me got blurry, all I could focus on was her. I couldn’t concentrate on anything but her soft, almost whisper-like voice. It felt magical.
“What do you think, Andrew?” asked Evander.
“Huh? What do I think about what? What are you two talking about now?”
“I told you; he wasn’t listening. I don’t even know why you include him in some of our conversations, Osiris. Most times he is just being a meat head, alpha jock and if he can’t yell at it, beat it up, or f**k it, he doesn’t care.”
“Umm, OUCH. Also, not true. I wasn’t listening because I was thinking about our little situation, you know, a pack member murdered over 100 miles from our land.”
“Oh, yeah, that part.” grunted Evander.
“Oh, yeah, that part.” I mockingly repeated back to Evander. I rolled my eyes so hard I thought they might actually fall out of my head.
“Don’t roll your eyes at me. What are you 9 years old? You’re so irritating.”
“Yep, us meat heads never grow up.”
“Stop it, you two. This isn’t helping. We’ve got quite a way to go before we reach our lands, so let’s try to be productive the rest of the ride there.” Growled Osiris.
“If you two weren’t talking about Brook, what were you talking about?” I asked, completely floored that those two weren’t more worried about what the implications of this murder could be for us and our way of life.
Humans hunted werewolves. It’s open season on werewolves, all day, every day of the year, and you don’t need a hunting license to do it. Kill on site. This murder could wipe out our whole pack, our whole existence. I just don’t understand why it’s not a priority for my brothers.
“Evander had made the comment that the whole point of this road trip was to tell Alsie she might be our mate. But because of the murder of Brook and you, almost shifting in front of a coffee shop in broad daylight, we never got to have that conversation with her. Alsie still doesn’t know she might be our mate. It feels like a wasted trip,” explained Osiris.
“She knows. I told her.”
“WHAT?!” roared Evander.
Osiris’s head snapped back at me so fast and hard it looked like it hurt.
“Hey, eyes on the road, or pull over. Stop serving all over the damn freeway.”
Osiris turned on the hazard lights, slowed down, and merged to the side of the freeway. Once he was safely on the shoulder of the freeway, he put the Rover in park, turned it off, unfastened his seatbelt and turned in his seat to face me.
Very calmly, Osiris stared dead into my eyes and asked me “You did what?” As he finished his question, I saw his eyes go black, his wolf was trying to come through. I maintained eye contact with him, matching his intensity. I felt my wolf, Kael, fighting to come all the way to the surface. He was ready for the challenge my brother was posing.
“Hey. Hey, you two. Come on, we need to talk about this. This is not the way to resolve the issue,” pleaded Evander.
Evander was right; this wasn't the solution. But Osiris and I, both alphas, were locked in a stare-down, neither willing to back down. This trip is destined to end badly.
At that moment, my phone rang. I reached to grab it, the screen said Alsie. I turned my phone so both Evander and Osiris could read the screen. I answered and put the call on speaker.
“Hey Andrew. I’m on my way back home. I tried to call Osiris, but his phone went straight to voicemail.”
“No worries, we’re all here, and I have you speaker. What’s going on?” I asked, thankful for the call.
“I got some information regarding Brook’s murder. I really shouldn’t be telling you about any of this, as it’s an ongoing investigation. But her ID and wallet were recovered. The address on her ID is for a rental property in Vader. She didn’t use her pack address. I’m not going to ask any of you if you know why, or what was in Vader. I don’t want to put any of your names in a report. I don’t know if anything else might lead the investigation to the pack. But as of right now, it’s not looking like it.”
“OK, good to hear Als, thanks for the update. That should dispel part of this disagreement we are currently having on the side of the road.”
“Oh, and one more thing. That mate thing you were talking about. You’re right. Alpha Kordell called me as I was leaving my desk and explained a few things to me. Alpha Kordell is going to make sure all the she-wolves leave the packhouse. He’s going to make some sort of announcement about a Luna to keep Beta Jacob from meddling in affairs that don’t concern him. He said a lot of other things, but I’m too tired to remember them all. We will meet soon outside the packlands to discuss details. Until then, we’re not supposed to be seen together. Alpha Kordell said he’d let us know when and where. So…according to Alpha Kordell, I guess I’ll see you soon…mates? I don’t know, weird. Wait, do y’all even want me to be your mate?”
“YES!” All three of us roared in unison.
“OK, I think I’m deaf in one ear now.” Giggled Alsie
“Oh, but seriously though, I will ALWAYS be a detective. I will ALWAYS do my job. That is not up for discussion. You hear me, you three, especially you Andrew.”
“Yes, Luna. We know and we hear you.” All three of us responded.
“Andrew?”
“Yes, baby. I know and I hear you.” I responded, feeling an inner peace I didn’t even know existed. I felt whole.
