The Truth They Wouldn't Tell

580 Words
Amina could not stop thinking about Michael. His warning continued to echo in her mind. "Be careful who you trust." She glanced across the office through the glass wall separating her workspace from Daniel's. He was standing by the window, looking out over the city below. He had spoken very little since Michael's visit. At last, she knocked gently on his door. "Come in." She stepped inside and closed the door behind her. "Who is Michael?" Daniel remained silent. "An old business partner?" "No." "A relative?" "No." "Then who is he?" Daniel exhaled slowly. "He was my best friend." Amina blinked in surprise. "What happened?" Daniel looked away. "We made mistakes." "Both of you?" "Yes." She waited for him to continue. Instead, he changed the subject. "There is an important board meeting this afternoon. I would like you to attend." Amina understood that he was not ready to speak further. "All right." --- At exactly 2:00 p.m., the boardroom was filled with executives. Amina took notes while Daniel presented the company's expansion plans. Everything proceeded smoothly until one of the directors cleared his throat. "Mr. Okello." "Yes?" "We have received anonymous emails questioning your recent engagement." The room fell silent. Daniel's expression remained unchanged. "What kind of questions?" The director adjusted his glasses. "They claim Miss Amina is only interested in your money." Amina felt every pair of eyes turn toward her. Before she could respond, Daniel stood. "My fiancée's character is not a subject for this board." Another director spoke up. "But the shareholders—" Daniel cut him off. "If anyone has concerns about my personal life, they may address them directly to me." His voice remained calm. "But no one in this room will disrespect Amina." Silence followed. The meeting continued. Amina looked at Daniel with gratitude. He had defended her without hesitation. --- After work, Daniel drove Amina home. Neither of them spoke until they reached the mansion. As they stepped out of the car, Amina finally broke the silence. "You did not have to defend me like that." "Yes, I did." "It was not your responsibility." He looked at her seriously. "It became my responsibility the day you signed that contract." For a moment, they simply stood there. Then Amina smiled. "Thank you." Daniel smiled back—small, genuine, and effortless. It was the first smile she had seen from him that did not appear forced. --- Across town, Michael entered an old café. Vanessa was already waiting. "Well?" she asked. Michael sat down. "He is protecting her." "I expected that." "But something has changed." Vanessa frowned. "What do you mean?" Michael stirred his coffee. "At first, I thought he was pretending." He looked out the window. "I am not so sure anymore." Vanessa's expression hardened. "They are falling for each other." Michael nodded slowly. "That appears to be the case." Vanessa slammed her hand on the table. "Then we do not have much time." She reached into her handbag and handed Michael a sealed envelope. "What is this?" he asked. "The evidence." He opened it. Inside was an old newspaper clipping, several photographs, and a handwritten letter. His smile vanished. "Are you certain?" Vanessa nodded. "If Amina sees those..." "...she will never look at Daniel the same way again." Outside, the evening sky darkened as thunder rolled across Kampala. Some secrets were meant to remain buried. But by the end of the week... Daniel's greatest secret would be one step closer to the light.
