The Trap

Monday morning arrived with an uneasy calm. The city buzzed with speculation about Vanessa's disappearance, while Okello Group employees whispered in the hallways. Daniel gathered Grace, the company's legal team, and the head of security in the boardroom. "We have two priorities," he said. "Protect the company and protect Amina." The head of security nodded. "We've increased security at the mansion and the headquarters." Grace added, "The police also assigned plainclothes officers nearby." Daniel looked relieved. "Good." --- Amina was reviewing reports when her phone vibrated. The caller ID showed an unknown number. She hesitated before answering. "Hello?" "Amina?" It was her younger brother, Isaac. "Isaac! Why are you calling from another number?" His voice trembled. "My phone was stolen." "What happened?" "I was walking home from school when two men stopped me." Amina stood up immediately. "Are you hurt?" "I'm okay." "They said I should tell you to stay away from Daniel Okello." Her heart dropped. "What?" "They said... if you don't..." His voice cracked. "...next time they won't just take my phone." The call ended. Amina stared at the screen, frozen. --- Minutes later, Daniel found her sitting silently in her office. "Amina?" She looked up, tears filling her eyes. "They threatened Isaac." Daniel's face turned cold. "Who?" She explained everything. Without another word, Daniel picked up his phone. "Grace." "Yes, sir?" "I want two security officers at Mrs. Hassan's house immediately." Mrs. Hassan was Amina's mother. "And arrange private transport for Isaac to and from school." "Right away." Amina looked at him. "You don't have to do all this." "I know." "But I will." --- Across town, Vanessa sat inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Kampala. The Chairman entered, flanked by two bodyguards. "You've become difficult to contact," he said. "The police are looking for me." "They'll never find you here." Vanessa folded her arms. "Our plan isn't working." "It will." "You underestimated Amina." The Chairman smiled. "No." "I underestimated Daniel." He walked to the window. "I never imagined he'd risk everything for someone outside his world." Vanessa looked thoughtful. "What now?" The Chairman's expression darkened. "We stop attacking the company." She frowned. "Then what?" "We attack what Daniel values most." --- That evening, Daniel insisted on driving Amina to her mother's house himself. Isaac ran out to greet them. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "This is all my fault." Amina hugged him tightly. "No." "You've done nothing wrong." Daniel crouched to Isaac's level. "Listen to me." Isaac nodded. "No matter what happens..." "You are not alone." The boy managed a small smile. "Thank you, Mr. Okello." "Call me Daniel." Isaac grinned. "Only if you stop calling my sister 'Miss Amina.'" Daniel laughed. "I think that's fair." Amina smiled as she watched them. For a moment, they looked like family. A real family. --- Later that night, Daniel and Amina were driving back to the mansion when a black pickup truck suddenly swerved into their lane. "Daniel!" He turned the steering wheel sharply. The car narrowly avoided a collision. The pickup sped away into the darkness. Daniel brought the car to a stop by the roadside. "Are you okay?" he asked. Amina nodded, though her hands were shaking. He reached over and held her hand. "It's over." Before either of them could catch their breath, Grace called. "Sir!" "We've traced the pickup truck." "And?" "It belongs to a security company owned by..." She paused. "...the Chairman." Daniel's grip on the phone tightened. The attacks had become personal. And this time... Someone had tried to kill them. Far away, hidden in the shadows of the warehouse, the Chairman looked at a photograph of Daniel and Amina. He smiled coldly. "If fear doesn't separate them..." "...the next move will."
