WHEN THE MUSIC STOPPED
The first rays of dawn slipped through the towering windows of the eastern palace, painting the marble floors in shades of gold. ‎Outside, the Kingdom of Asterwyn stirred awake. ‎Servants hurried through the halls carrying baskets of fresh flowers. ‎Musicians tuned their instruments in preparation for the grand Moon Blossom Ball. Nobles from every corner of the kingdom had begun arriving at the palace before sunrise. ‎Today was meant to be a celebration. ‎Yet the quiet wing at the far end of the palace remained untouched by the excitement. ‎Unlike the lavish chambers of the royal family, its walls were plain, its curtains faded, and the fireplace had long since gone cold. ‎A young woman sat by the window, her long silver hair cascading over her shoulders as she stared into the gardens below. ‎Princess Lyrielle Asteria. ‎A gentle knock broke the silence. ‎"My princess?" a soft voice called. ‎Lyrielle smiled faintly. ‎"You may come in, Luna." ‎The wooden door creaked open as a young maid entered carrying a neatly folded gown. ‎"I brought your dress for tonight." ‎Lyrielle looked at it. ‎It was beautiful... ‎Until she noticed the stitching. ‎It had been repaired. ‎Again. ‎Someone else's old dress. ‎Luna quickly lowered her eyes. ‎"I'm... I'm sorry." ‎Elara reached over and squeezed her hand. ‎"It's alright." ‎No. ‎It wasn't. ‎Every year, her sisters received gowns woven from enchanted silk and decorated with moon crystals. ‎Every year... ‎She wore whatever was left. ‎By midday, the palace had become alive with music. ‎Elara quietly walked through the corridors toward the royal dining hall. ‎As she stepped inside, laughter immediately reached her ears. ‎King Orion sat at the head of the table. ‎Beside him were Prince Cassian, Princess Selene and Prince Rowan. ‎They didn't notice her. ‎"...Selene will make a wonderful queen one day," the king said proudly. ‎Cassian nodded. ‎"She already has the respect of the nobles." ‎Selene smiled elegantly. ‎"I only hope I can make you proud, Father." ‎"You already have." ‎Those three words struck Lyrielle harder than any spell. ‎She stood silently in the doorway. ‎Waiting. ‎Perhaps... ‎Perhaps today... ‎He would notice her. ‎The king looked up. ‎Their eyes met. ‎For a heartbeat... ‎Hope bloomed inside her chest. ‎Then he turned back to Selene. ‎"Have the royal tailor prepare another gown for tonight." ‎Lyrielle's smile disappeared. ‎Without a word... ‎She quietly left. ‎No one stopped her. ‎No one called her name. ‎ ‎Later that afternoon, the palace gardens were filled with blooming moon lilies. ‎Lyrielle knelt beside a dying white flower. ‎She gently placed her hand over it. ‎A soft silver glow surrounded her fingers. ‎Slowly... ‎The flower stood upright once more. ‎Its petals opened. ‎A tiny smile appeared on her face. ‎"You always come here." ‎Lyrielle turned. ‎Prince Rowan stood beneath an ancient oak tree. ‎"I don't enjoy crowded halls," she answered. ‎He folded his arms. ‎"You should prepare yourself." ‎"For what?" ‎"The ball." ‎"I know." ‎"No." ‎ ‎His expression became serious. ‎"Something important is happening tonight." ‎Before she could ask another question, he walked away. ‎Night came rather too quickly. The palace was alive with music. ‎Crystal chandeliers bathed the grand ballroom in warm light as nobles laughed, glasses clinked, and servants hurried between elegantly dressed guests. ‎Tonight was the annual Moon Blossom Ball, the most celebrated night in the Witch Kingdom. ‎Every member of the royal family was present. ‎Except one. ‎Lyrielle stood alone on the balcony outside the ballroom, her fingers gripping the cold marble railing. Through the tall windows, she watched her father dance with her elder sister while nobles smiled and applauded. ‎No one had noticed she was missing ‎No one had come looking for her. ‎A maid stepped onto the balcony, carrying a tray of empty glasses. She glanced at Lyrielle with surprise. ‎"Your Highness... why are you out here?" ‎Lyrielle forced a small smile. ‎"It's warmer out here ". ‎The lie tasted bitter. ‎Inside, ‎King Orion stepped onto the stage. ‎"Welcome, honored guests." ‎Thunderous applause echoed through the room. ‎Selene descended the grand staircase wearing a magnificent silver gown. ‎Cheers erupted. ‎King Orion raised his glass. ‎"To my beloved daughter, Princess Selene-the pride of Asterwyn." ‎Cheers echoed through the hall. ‎Lyrielle lowered her eyes. ‎She had stopped wondering what it felt like to have that happen to her. ‎ She finally returned to the ballroom... ‎Silence. ‎Some nobles looked confused. ‎Others whispered. ‎"I forgot the king had another daughter." ‎"That's Princess Lyrielle?" ‎"I've never even seen her before." ‎Selene approached with a graceful smile. ‎"Oh, Sister." ‎She looked Lyrielle up and down. ‎"I'm surprised you came." ‎"I was invited." ‎"Were you?,I figured you preferred hiding away in the garden". ‎A few nearby nobles laughed. ‎Lyrielle lowered her gaze. ‎Before another word could be spoken- ‎BOOM! ‎ ‎The enormous palace doors swung open. ‎ ‎An icy wind swept through the ballroom. ‎The music stopped. ‎ ‎Every conversation died. ‎ ‎A royal herald's voice echoed through the hall. ‎ ‎"His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Malachar Noctis of the Nocthyr Dominion..." ‎Another pause. ‎"And His Royal Highness... ‎Crown Prince Azrael Noctis." ‎ ‎The demons had arrived. ‎ ‎They entered with calm confidence, dressed in black embroidered robes that seemed to absorb the light around them. ‎At their head walked Emperor Malachar. ‎Beside him... ‎ ‎Prince Azrael. ‎Tall. ‎ ‎Broad-shouldered. ‎ ‎His black hair framed a face that was both striking and unreadable. ‎ ‎Golden eyes swept across the room. ‎For a moment... ‎They met Lyrielle. ‎She expected contempt. ‎Instead... ‎He simply looked at her. ‎As though he were trying to understand something. ‎King Orion stepped forward. ‎"My old friend." ‎The two rulers exchanged formal greetings. ‎Then the king raised his hand. ‎"My lords and ladies..." ‎"The time has come to announce the alliance that will secure peace between our kingdoms." ‎The ballroom held its breath. ‎King Orion turned. ‎His eyes landed on Lyrielle. ‎For the first time all day...all her life ‎He truly looked at her. ‎"Princess Lyrielle." ‎Her heart skipped. ‎" You may step forward." ‎She obeyed. ‎Unsure why. ‎The king faced the crowd. ‎"To strengthen the bond between Asterwyn and the Nocthyr Dominion..." ‎"I hereby announce the engagement of my daughter..." ‎He paused. ‎"...Princess Lyrielle Asteria..." ‎"...to Crown Prince Azrael Noctis." ‎ ‎Silence. ‎Then whispers exploded across the ballroom. ‎"The forgotten princess?" ‎"She's marrying the Demon Prince?" ‎"Why her?" ‎Lyrielle stared at her father. ‎"Father..." ‎Her voice barely rose above a whisper. ‎"You never asked me." a tear dropped from her eye. ‎King Orion's face remained unreadable. ‎"This marriage is for the good of the kingdom." ‎She swallowed hard. ‎"And what about what's good for me?" ‎He didn't answer. ‎Instead, he turned away. ‎As if the conversation had already ended before it could even begin. ‎Lyrielle felt something inside her break. ‎Across the room, Azrael watched the exchange in silence. ‎For the first time in years... ‎Someone looked at Lyrielle not with pity... ‎Not with mockery ‎But with understanding... ‎And somehow ... ‎That hurt even more..
