The darkness was heavy. Suffocating.
Alex floated in it, weightless and numb. No pain. No fear. No anger. Just emptiness.
Then the light came. Harsh and white. Burning his eyes.
He opened them.
The medical bay ceiling again. Same gray concrete. Same flickering lights. Same smell of antiseptic and blood.
But this time, he was alone.
He tried to sit up. His body screamed in protest. Every muscle ached. Every bone felt like it had been broken and poorly reassembled.
He looked at his hands. They were trembling. Weak. Useless.
The power was still gone.
"Don't move too fast."
Aurora's voice. She appeared at his bedside, her face drawn and exhausted. Dark circles under her eyes. Hair disheveled.
"You've been out for two days," she said. "Your body went into shock after the suppressor device. It's still recovering."
"The device," Alex said. His voice was a croak. "What was it? What did it do to me?"
Aurora hesitated. Then she sat down beside him, her expression grim.
"It's called a limiter. A prototype developed by the Vance Corporation. It's designed to suppress Alpha powers completely. Make you human again."
She paused. "And it works. The limiter is bonded to your nervous system. As long as it's active, you won't be able to access your Alpha abilities."
"How do we turn it off?"
"We don't." Her voice was flat. Final. "Only Silas Vance has the key. It's biometrically locked to his genetic signature. We can't remove it without killing you."
Alex lay back, staring at the ceiling. The numbness was back. The emptiness.
He was human again. Weak. Helpless.
Just like he'd been before.
"There has to be a way," he said. "There's always a way."
Aurora shook her head. "We've tried everything. The limiter is woven into your nervous system. It's untouchable without causing catastrophic damage."
She leaned closer. "I'm sorry, Alexander. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear."
Alex closed his eyes. The darkness was calling again. The emptiness. The surrender.
But something else was there too. A flicker of defiance. A spark of anger.
He opened his eyes. "Then we find another way. We find Silas. We make him remove it."
"That's suicide. He has an army. He has resources. And now he has the technology to neutralize you."
"Then we fight smarter. We don't go after him directly. We build. We gather allies. We learn everything we can about his operations."
Aurora stared at him. "You're serious. Even without your powers, you want to fight him."
"I've been fighting my whole life. Powers or no powers. I'm not going to stop now."
She was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.
"Fine. But you're going to need help. A lot of it."
"I know." Alex sat up, ignoring the pain. "Where's Sebastian? Where's the prisoner we rescued?"
"Sebastian is in the command center. He's been working nonstop to find a way to neutralize the limiter. And the prisoner—" She paused. "He's been asking about you. He wants to meet you."
Alex nodded. "Take me to him."
The prisoner was in a room down the hall. Small. Sparse. But comfortable.
He was young. Barely seventeen. Dark hair. Dark eyes that held too much fear and too little hope.
He was sitting on the bed, his knees drawn up to his chest. When Alex entered, he flinched.
"I'm not going to hurt you," Alex said. "I'm here to help."
The boy stared at him. "You're the one who rescued me. The Alpha."
"Was," Alex said. "I was an Alpha. Not anymore."
The boy's eyes widened. "They took your powers too?"
Alex sat down in a chair across from the bed. "They did. But I'm going to get them back. And then I'm going to make them pay."
The boy stared at him. Something flickered in his eyes. Recognition. Perhaps respect.
"I'm Nathan," he said. "Nathan Wells."
"Alex Knight. Nice to meet you, Nathan."
Nathan nodded slowly. "They told me what you did. How you fought. How you saved me. I thought you were going to be... bigger."
Alex laughed. A harsh, bitter sound. "I'm just a man. Same as you. Powers or no powers."
"But you're not scared."
"I'm terrified." Alex met his eyes. "But I'm not going to let that stop me."
Nathan was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke again. "The limiter. I know about it. They were going to use it on me too. Before you came."
Alex leaned forward. "What do you know?"
"The Vance Corporation. They're working on a way to control Alphas. To make us obedient. Slaves." Nathan's voice trembled. "They're building an army. An army of Alphas who can't fight back."
An army. The words echoed in Alex's mind. Silas wasn't just trying to neutralize him. He was building a force that could conquer the world.
"We need to stop them," Alex said. "But I can't do it alone. I need your help."
Nathan looked at him. "What can I do? I'm just a kid. I don't even understand my powers."
"You can help by surviving. By learning. By growing strong." Alex leaned closer. "You can be the future, Nathan. The future of the Alphas. But only if you survive."
Nathan was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "I'll try."
"Good. That's all I ask."
Alex stood and walked to the door. He paused at the threshold.
"Get some rest," he said. "Tomorrow, we start training."
He left Nathan in the room and walked to the command center.
Sebastian was there, surrounded by screens and data feeds. His expression was focused. Intense.
"Alexander," he said. "Good. I was about to call you."
Alex sat down in a chair beside him. "What do you have?"
Sebastian gestured to a screen. "I've been analyzing the limiter technology. There's a weakness. A flaw in the design."
Alex felt a spark of hope. "What kind of flaw?"
"The limiter is connected to your nervous system. It suppresses the Alpha power by blocking the synaptic pathways that trigger the genetic response. But the connection is two-way. It also sends a signal back to Vance's headquarters. A tracking signal."
He turned to face Alex. "I can't turn off the limiter. But I can use its signal. I can track it back to Vance's main base. Find out where he's operating from."
Alex's mind was racing. "You're saying we can find Silas. Use the limiter to track him."
"Exactly. It's a risk. The signal is encrypted. It will take time to break. But it's our best chance to find him."
"How long?"
"Weeks. Maybe months. We'll need to locate the source of the signal. Then we'll need a plan to infiltrate."
Alex nodded slowly. Months. It was longer than he wanted. But it was better than nothing.
"Do it," he said. "Whatever it takes. Find him."
Sebastian nodded. "I'll get Marcus on it. He's the best."
Alex stood. "I'm going to train. I need to be ready when we find him."
"Train? Without your powers?"
"I can still fight. I can still think. I can still plan." He met Sebastian's eyes. "I was a soldier before I was an Alpha. I'm not going to forget that."
Sebastian nodded slowly. "There's a gym down the hall. Equipment. Weapons. Use it."
Alex walked to the door. "I will."
He paused at the threshold. "Thank you, Sebastian. For everything."
Sebastian's expression was unreadable. "Don't thank me yet. The war is just beginning."
Alex left the command center and walked to the gym.
It was a large room. Sparsely furnished. A few punching bags. A weight bench. A rack of weapons.
He stripped off his shirt and attacked the first punching bag. His fists slammed into the leather, again and again.
He was weak. Slow. Human.
But he was still alive. Still fighting.
That was all that mattered.
He was still at it an hour later when Jaxon walked in.
The massive operative watched him silently. Then he walked over to the bag and held it steady.
"You need to work on your form," he said. "Your punches are sloppy."
Alex wiped sweat from his brow. "I'm out of practice."
"You're out of power. There's a difference." Jaxon stepped back. "Let me show you something."
He demonstrated a combination. Fast. Brutal. Efficient.
"Human or Alpha, the basics are the same. Balance. Timing. Accuracy. If you can't do it without powers, you can't do it with them."
Alex nodded slowly. "Show me again."
He spent the next three hours training. Jaxon was relentless. Pushing him to his limits. Correcting his mistakes.
By the end, Alex could barely stand. His muscles were screaming. His joints were on fire.
But he felt better. Stronger. More focused.
"You're not bad for a human," Jaxon said. "You might make a decent soldier one day."
Alex laughed. "I was a decent soldier. Once."
"You still are. The powers were just a bonus. They didn't make you who you are. You did that."
The words hit Alex like a punch to the chest. Jaxon was right. He'd been so focused on losing his powers that he'd forgotten who he was without them.
He was still Alexander Knight. Still a soldier. Still a survivor.
He could still fight.
"Thanks, Jaxon," he said. "I needed that."
Jaxon grinned. "Anytime, Alpha. Anytime."
Alex showered and changed clothes. Then he went to find Aurora.
She was in the medical bay, examining the limiter's data.
"Any progress?" he asked.
She looked up. "I've identified the encryption protocol. It's complex. Military-grade. But it's not impossible to break."
"How long?"
"A few weeks. Maybe more. But I'm making progress."
Alex nodded. "Keep at it. I'll handle the rest."
She smiled. A small, sad smile. "You're not going to give up, are you?"
"Never. That's not who I am."
She nodded slowly. "I know. That's why I trust you."
Alex left her to her work and went to his room.
He sat on the bed, staring at the wall.
The power was gone. The darkness was gone.
But something else was there. Something new. Something he hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.
He was still alive. Still fighting. Still searching for answers.
And one day, he would find them.
The next morning, Alex woke early. He went to the gym and trained. He ate breakfast with the team. He checked on Nathan.
He was building a new life. A new purpose.
And slowly, he was becoming himself again.
The war was coming. Silas was out there. The Vance Corporation was growing stronger.
But Alex was ready.
He was ready to fight.
The limiter's signal led to a remote facility in the mountains. Isolated. Fortified. Impregnable.
Sebastian's team had spent weeks analyzing the data. They'd identified the facility as Silas's main base. The heart of the Vance Corporation's operations.
"According to our intelligence," Sebastian said, "the facility is heavily guarded. Hundreds of armed personnel. State-of-the-art security systems. And it's protected by a team of Alphas."
Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Alphas?"
"Silas has been using the limiter technology to control them. To turn them into weapons." Sebastian's expression was grim. "They're slaves. Puppets. They'll do whatever he commands."
Alex nodded slowly. "How do we stop them?"
"We don't. At least, not directly." Sebastian gestured to the screen. "Our best chance is infiltration. Get inside. Find Silas. Make him remove the limiter. Then use your powers to shut down his operation."
"That's a long shot."
"It's the only shot we've got."
Alex nodded. "Then we take it."
The team prepared for the mission. Jaxon packed explosives. Marcus gathered intelligence. Aria checked her rifle.
And Alex waited.
The night before the assault, he visited Nathan's room.
The boy was awake, staring at the ceiling.
"I heard you're leaving," Nathan said. "To fight Silas."
Alex nodded. "I'm going to end this. One way or another."
Nathan sat up. "I want to come with you."
"No. You're not ready. You're still too young. Too inexperienced."
"I can help." Nathan's eyes were fierce. "I've been training. I've been learning. I can fight."
Alex shook his head. "Not this fight. This one is mine. Stay here. Stay safe. That's the best way you can help."
Nathan looked like he wanted to argue. But he nodded slowly. "Fine. But I'll be ready for the next fight."
Alex smiled. "I know you will."
He left Nathan's room and walked to the command center.
The team was assembled. Jaxon. Marcus. Aria. Sebastian.
They were ready.
"Let's move out," Alex said. "We've got a war to win."
The SUV drove through the darkness, heading toward the mountains.
Alex sat in the back, his mind focused. The limiter was still active. The power was still gone.
But he wasn't afraid. He was ready.
The facility appeared in the distance. A fortress of steel and concrete. Impenetrable.
"We're close," Sebastian said. "Time for phase one."
Alex nodded. He checked his weapon. Checked his gear.
"Let's do this," he said.
The SUV stopped at the perimeter.
Alex stepped out into the darkness.
The war had begun.
And this time, he was ready to win.
