The Interrogation

1994 Words
The cell was cold. Bare. A single light bulb flickered overhead, casting dancing shadows on the concrete walls. Dominic sat in the center, his wrists bound to the chair. His face was bruised. Blood crusted at the corner of his mouth. But his eyes were still sharp. Still calculating. He was studying Alex. Looking for weaknesses. Alex stood across from him, arms crossed. He'd been here for an hour. Waiting. Watching. Dominic hadn't spoken a word. "You know why I'm here," Alex said finally. "Arabella. Where is she?" Dominic smiled. A thin, cold expression. "I don't know what you're talking about." "Don't play games with me." Alex stepped closer. "Aurora told me everything. You've been using her sister to control her. Now I want to know where she is." Dominic laughed. "You think I'm going to tell you? Just like that?" "I think you're going to tell me because you have no other choice." Dominic leaned back in his chair. "You're wrong. I have plenty of choices. I could tell you nothing. I could lie. I could give you false information and watch you run in circles." "And then what? You rot in this cell for the rest of your life." Dominic's smile widened. "You think this cell can hold me? I've escaped worse. And I have people on the outside. People who will come for me." "Let them come." Alex's voice was flat. "I'll be waiting." Dominic studied him. "You're not like the others. You're not a soldier. Not really. You're something else. Something... uncertain." "I'm the man who's going to break you." Dominic laughed again. "You can try. But you'll fail. Just like you failed to save your men. Just like you failed to stop Silas from dying." Alex felt the darkness surge. The hunger. The rage. He pushed it down. Forced himself to stay calm. "Where is Arabella?" he asked again. Dominic was silent. He was waiting for something. Alex could feel it. "What are you waiting for?" Alex demanded. Dominic's smile returned. "For you to realize that you can't win. That no matter what you do, you'll never be able to stop what's coming." "What's coming?" Dominic leaned forward. "The end. The war. The destruction of everything you hold dear." Alex stared at him. The man was delusional. Broken. But there was something in his eyes. Something that made Alex uneasy. "Tell me where Arabella is," he said again. "And I'll make your death quick." Dominic leaned back. "I'll tell you nothing. You'll have to figure it out yourself." Alex felt the darkness surge again. Stronger this time. He grabbed Dominic by the throat. "Tell me. Now." Dominic gasped. But he was still smiling. "Kill me," he said. "It won't matter. You'll never find her. And when she dies, it will be your fault. Just like it was your fault that your men died." Alex squeezed harder. The darkness was screaming. The hunger was overwhelming. He could kill him. End the threat. Satisfy the rage. But then he'd never find Arabella. Never save her. He released Dominic and stepped back. "You're trying to provoke me," he said. "It won't work." Dominic coughed, rubbing his throat. "Are you sure about that? You're barely in control. I can see it. The darkness inside you. It's getting stronger." Alex turned away. "I'll be back. And when I am, you're going to tell me what I want to know." He walked out of the cell and slammed the door behind him. The interrogation room was small. Bare. A single table, two chairs, and a recording device. Aurora was waiting for him. Her eyes were red-rimmed. She'd been crying. "Did he tell you anything?" she asked. Alex shook his head. "Nothing. He's playing games." Aurora's face crumpled. "Arabella... she's all I have left. I can't lose her. I can't." Alex placed a hand on her shoulder. "We're going to find her. I promise." "How? If he won't talk, how will we find her?" Alex was silent for a moment. Then he said, "We find another way. We track her through his systems. His communications. His networks." Aurora nodded slowly. "I can do that. I can try." "Do it. I'll keep Dominic occupied." Alex left her and walked to the command center. Sebastian was there, analyzing intelligence. He looked up as Alex entered. "Any progress?" he asked. Alex shook his head. "He's not talking. He's trying to break me." Sebastian nodded. "He's a professional. Trained to resist interrogation. It's going to take time." "We don't have time. Aurora's sister is out there. Dying." Sebastian leaned back. "What do you suggest?" Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "I'm going to talk to Elena. She knows Dominic better than anyone. She might know something that can help." Sebastian nodded. "Be careful. Elena has her own agenda." "I know." Alex found Elena in the armory. She was cleaning her weapons, her movements precise and methodical. "Dominic won't talk," Alex said. "I need your help." Elena didn't look up. "What kind of help?" "You worked with him. You know how he thinks. What motivates him." "He's motivated by one thing. Power. Control. He wants to rule the world. Just like Silas. Just like every other megalomaniac." "And what about Arabella? Why is he holding her?" Elena finally looked up. "She's leverage. A tool. He's using her to control Aurora. And through Aurora, he was controlling you." "Then we need to find her. Rescue her. Break his hold." Elena shook her head. "It's not that simple. Dominic is smart. He's hidden her somewhere even I don't know. Somewhere secure." "Then we find out. We make him talk." "You already tried that. It didn't work." Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "What if we don't need him to talk? What if we find Arabella another way?" "Another way? What way?" "Aurora's working on it. Tracking his communications. His networks. She's good. She'll find something." Elena nodded slowly. "She might. But it will take time. And time is something we don't have." Alex turned to leave. "I'm not going to give up. I'm going to find Arabella. Even if it takes me forever." Elena watched him go. Her expression was unreadable. Alex walked through the facility, his mind racing. There had to be a way. A lead. Something. He found Nathan in the common room. The young Alpha was reading, his eyes focused on the pages. "Hey," Alex said. "Can I talk to you?" Nathan looked up. "Sure. What's going on?" "I need your help. Dominic won't talk. Aurora's sister is out there, dying. I don't know what to do." Nathan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Maybe you're asking the wrong question." "What do you mean?" "Maybe you don't need to find Arabella. Maybe you need to find the people who are holding her. The people who are working for Dominic." Alex stared at him. "That's... not a bad idea." Nathan smiled. "I'm smarter than I look." Alex laughed. "Yeah. You are." He left Nathan and returned to the command center. "Sebastian, I need a list. Dominic's contacts. His associates. Everyone who worked for him." Sebastian looked surprised. "That's a long list." "Then start with the most recent ones. The ones who were closest to him." Sebastian nodded. "I'll get on it." The next few days were a blur of activity. Alex worked with Marcus to analyze Dominic's networks. He interviewed captured Vance Corporation operatives. He followed every lead, no matter how small. And slowly, a picture began to emerge. Dominic had been working with a network of underground facilities. Safe houses. Labs. Prisons. Arabella was being held in one of them. The question was which one. "Look at this," Marcus said, pointing to a map on his screen. "There's a pattern. A geographical pattern. The facilities are spread out, but they're all connected by a single route. A supply line." "Where does the supply line lead?" Marcus zoomed in. "Here. A remote location in the mountains. An old research station. It's been off the grid for years." Alex felt a surge of hope. "That's it. That's where she is." "We don't know that for sure," Marcus said. "It could be a dead end." "It could be. But it's the best lead we've got." Alex assembled the team. Jaxon. Aria. Marcus. Elena. And a handful of newly recruited operatives. "We have a target," Alex said. "A research station in the mountains. We believe Arabella is being held there. We're going to rescue her." "When do we move?" Jaxon asked. "Now. We don't have time to wait." The team moved out. The research station was remote. Isolated. Surrounded by miles of wilderness. The approach was treacherous. The terrain was rugged. The weather was turning. But Alex pushed on. He couldn't afford to stop. The station appeared in the distance. A squat, concrete structure. Guard towers. Searchlights. Armed patrols. "Just like the last one," Jaxon muttered. "They love their mountain fortresses." Alex studied the layout. "Aria, find a position. Jaxon, you're on breaching. Marcus, you're with me. Elena, cover our flank." They moved into position. The assault was swift. Brutal. Efficient. Alex led the charge, his power blazing. The darkness was surging, but he was in control. He found Arabella in the lower level. A cell. Chains. A torture device. She was broken. Bruised. Barely conscious. But she was alive. "Arabella," Alex said, kneeling beside her. "I'm here. I'm going to get you out." She looked up at him, her eyes glassy. "You... you came for me." "I promised Aurora. I always keep my promises." He broke the chains and lifted her into his arms. She was light. Too light. They'd been starving her. "Let's get out of here," he said. They made their way through the facility. The guards were still fighting. But they were outnumbered. Outgunned. Jaxon had done his work. The station was falling. Alex emerged into the night, Arabella in his arms. The team was waiting. Jaxon had the explosive charges ready. "Light it up," Alex said. The station exploded behind them, a pillar of fire against the dark sky. They drove away, leaving the ruins behind. Arabella was in the back of the SUV, wrapped in a blanket. She was sleeping now. Healing. Aurora was holding her hand, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you." Alex nodded. "Don't thank me yet. The war's not over. But we're winning." They arrived back at the safe house. Arabella was taken to the medical bay. Aurora went with her. Alex stood in the corridor, watching them go. The darkness was quiet. The power was calm. But he knew it wouldn't last. There were other battles to fight. Other enemies to defeat. Sebastian approached him. "Good work, Alex. You saved her." "I did what had to be done." "It was more than that. You showed them what kind of leader you are. Compassionate. Determined. Unstoppable." Alex shook his head. "I'm just a soldier." "No." Sebastian placed a hand on his shoulder. "You're more than that. You're the Alpha we've been waiting for. The one who will lead us to victory." Alex looked at him. The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. He wasn't just a soldier anymore. He was a leader. A symbol. A hope. And he was going to win this war. No matter what it cost. Sebastian's comms buzzed. He answered, his face paling. "What is it?" Alex asked. Sebastian turned to him, his expression grim. "The Aegis Initiative has mobilized. They're launching a full-scale attack. On the safe house. On all of us." Alex felt the darkness surge. The power. "Then we fight," he said. "We fight, and we win." Sebastian nodded. "I'll get the team ready." Alex watched him go. The war was coming. The enemy was at the gates. But he was ready. He was Alpha. And he would never stop fighting.
