The New Threat

The compound exploded behind them. Alex didn't look back. He was too busy running, his body screaming with exhaustion, the power surging through his veins like wildfire. Dominic's base was gone. Jaxon had done his work. But the victory felt hollow. Because Dominic wasn't there. The team regrouped at the extraction point. Elena was furious, her face twisted with rage. "He knew," she spat. "He knew we were coming. Someone warned him." Alex leaned against the SUV, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Who?" "That's what we're going to find out." Sebastian's voice was cold. Controlled. "There's a mole in our organization. Someone who's been feeding Dominic information." The words hit Alex like a physical blow. A mole. Someone on the inside. "Who could it be?" he asked. Sebastian shook his head. "I don't know. But I'm going to find out." They drove back to the safe house in silence. The mood was grim. The victory had turned to ash in their mouths. Alex retreated to his quarters. He needed to think. To process. The power was still surging. The darkness was still there. But he was learning to control it. To use it. He closed his eyes and reached for the Hollow. The stillness. The quiet. It took him a moment to find it. But when he did, the darkness receded. The power settled. He was in control. For now. The next morning, Alex went to see Aurora. She was in the lab, analyzing the data from the operation. "The compound was a dead end," she said. "There's nothing there but rubble." "I know." Alex sat down across from her. "Sebastian thinks there's a mole." Aurora's expression didn't change. "That's a serious accusation." "It's a serious situation. Someone warned Dominic. Someone on the inside." She nodded slowly. "I'll run a security audit. See if I can find any anomalies." "Thank you." Alex stood to leave. But Aurora stopped him. "Alex. Be careful. If there really is a mole, they could be anyone. Even someone you trust." He nodded. "I know." He left the lab and walked to the gym. He needed to clear his head. To focus. Jaxon was there, pounding a heavy bag. He looked up as Alex entered. "You okay?" the big man asked. "I'm fine. Just thinking." "About the mole?" Alex nodded. "About who it could be. Who we can trust." Jaxon stopped punching. "It's not me. You know that." "I know." Alex grabbed a pair of gloves. "I'm not accusing you." "Good. Because I'd hate to have to break your nose." Alex laughed. A genuine laugh. It felt good. They trained for an hour. Jaxon pushed him hard. But Alex was getting stronger. Faster. More controlled. By the end, he was exhausted. But the power was quiet. The darkness was calm. He showered and found Sebastian in the command center. "We need to talk," Sebastian said. "About the mole." Alex sat down. "What have you found?" "I've been reviewing the security footage. The communications logs. Everything." Sebastian's expression was grim. "There's a pattern. Someone's been accessing classified data. Files that only a handful of people have clearance for." "Who?" Sebastian was silent for a long moment. "I don't know yet. The access point is encrypted. But I'm close. I can feel it." Alex nodded. "Keep me updated." He left the command center and walked through the facility. The rescued Alphas were training in the common room. Nathan was leading them, his voice steady and confident. The kid had grown. Become a leader. A symbol of hope. Alex watched for a moment, then continued walking. He found Elena in the armory, cleaning her weapons. "Sebastian thinks there's a mole," he said. Elena didn't look up. "I know. He told me." "And what do you think?" She finally met his eyes. "I think he's right. Someone's been feeding information to Dominic. And I think I know who it is." Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Who?" "Aria." The name hit him like a punch to the chest. Aria. The sniper. The one who'd watched his back during the attack on Silas's facility. "No," Alex said. "That's impossible. She's one of us." "She's also been acting strangely. Taking extra shifts. Accessing files she shouldn't have access to. And she was the one who insisted on taking the lead during the operation." "That's not evidence. That's just... circumstantial." Elena stood up. "You're right. It's not enough. But it's a start. And if I'm right, we need to be careful. If she suspects we're onto her, she'll disappear." Alex nodded slowly. "What do you suggest?" "Watch her. Follow her. See what she does. And don't let her know you're watching." Alex agreed. It was the only way. He spent the next day observing Aria. She was professional. Efficient. But there were small things that didn't add up. She was always the first to volunteer for operations. She always insisted on taking the lead. And she seemed to know things she shouldn't. It was circumstantial. But it was enough to make Alex suspicious. That evening, he confronted her. "Aria, I need to talk to you." She looked up from her rifle. "What about?" "About the mole. About who's been feeding Dominic information." Aria's expression didn't change. "I don't know what you're talking about." "I think you do." Alex stepped closer. "I think you've been working for Dominic. I think you've been selling us out." Aria's eyes narrowed. "That's a serious accusation." "It is. And I can prove it." He pulled out a data pad. "I've been tracking your access logs. You've been accessing classified files. Files that only a handful of people have clearance for. And you've been doing it at odd hours. When no one else is around." Aria stared at the data pad. "That's not what it looks like." "Then explain it to me." She was silent for a long moment. Then she sighed. "You're right," she said. "I've been accessing classified files. But not for Dominic. For myself." "Why?" She met his eyes. "Because I'm trying to find my sister. She was taken by the Vance Corporation years ago. I've been searching for her ever since. The files I accessed... they were about her. About where she might be." Alex stared at her. "Your sister?" "Her name is Luna. She was an Alpha. One of the early experiments. The Vance Corporation took her when she was sixteen. I've been trying to find her ever since." Alex felt the anger drain away. Aria wasn't a mole. She was a sister trying to find her family. "I'm sorry," he said. "I should have asked before accusing you." "It's okay." Aria's voice was tired. "I understand why you thought it was me. But I'm not the mole. I've been working against the Vance Corporation my whole life. I would never betray you." Alex nodded. "I believe you. But the mole is still out there. We need to find them." "I know." Aria picked up her rifle. "And I'm going to help you." The search for the mole continued. Alex worked with Sebastian to analyze the data. They found more anomalies. More patterns. But they couldn't pinpoint the source. Whoever the mole was, they were good. Very good. And they were still feeding information to Dominic. "We need to set a trap," Alex said. "Feed the mole false information. See what happens." Sebastian nodded. "I was thinking the same thing. We'll create a fake operation. A target that's too tempting to resist. Then we'll see who bites." They set the plan in motion. A fake intelligence report about a hidden Vance Corporation facility. Sensitive information that only a handful of people had access to. Then they waited. The trap was triggered three days later. Someone accessed the classified files. Someone who shouldn't have had access. Alex and Sebastian moved quickly. They tracked the access point to the medical bay. To Aurora's terminal. Alex felt his heart sink. "No. It can't be." But it was. Aurora had accessed the files. Aurora had been feeding Dominic information. They confronted her in the lab. "Aurora," Alex said. "I need to ask you something." She looked up from her terminal. "What is it?" "Did you access the classified files? The ones about the fake operation?" Aurora's face went pale. "I... yes. I did." Alex felt the betrayal like a knife in his chest. "Why? Why would you do that?" Aurora was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke. "Because I had to. Because Dominic has my sister. And he's been using her to control me." The words hit Alex like a physical blow. Another sister. Another hostage. "Your sister?" "Her name is Arabella. She's an Alpha. Dominic has been holding her prisoner for years. If I didn't give him information, he would kill her." Alex stared at her. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you trust me?" "Because I was afraid. Afraid you'd judge me. Afraid you'd hate me. Afraid you'd do something that would get my sister killed." Alex shook his head. "I don't hate you, Aurora. I understand. I would do the same thing if I were in your position." She looked up, her eyes wet with tears. "Really?" "Really. But we need to fix this. We need to save your sister. And we need to stop Dominic." Aurora nodded. "I'll help. I'll do whatever it takes." Alex turned to Sebastian. "We need to find Arabella. We need to rescue her." Sebastian nodded. "I'll get the team ready." The operation was planned. The target was identified. Dominic's main base. They were going to war. Alex walked through the facility, checking on the team. Jaxon was loading explosives. Marcus was analyzing intelligence. Aria was cleaning her rifle. And Elena was watching him from the shadows. "You knew, didn't you?" Alex said. "About Aurora. About her sister." Elena stepped forward. "I suspected. I didn't know for sure." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because I wanted to see how you'd react. Whether you'd judge her. Whether you'd condemn her." "And what did you find?" Elena smiled. "You surprised me. You were merciful. Understanding. That's rare in a leader." Alex felt a warmth in his chest. "I'm not a leader. I'm just a soldier." "No. You're more than that. You're a leader. And I'm starting to believe you might be the leader we need." The mission was set. The team was ready. Alex stood at the front of the group, the power singing in his veins. "We have one objective," he said. "Rescue Arabella. Stop Dominic. End this war." The team nodded. They were ready. They moved out at nightfall. The compound was in the mountains. Fortified. Impenetrable. But they had Aurora's intelligence. They had the element of surprise. And they had Alex. The assault began. Explosions. Gunfire. Chaos. Alex led the charge, his power blazing. The darkness was surging, but he was in control. He found Dominic in the command center. The man was calm. Collected. "So," Dominic said. "You finally found me." Alex raised his weapon. "It's over. Surrender. End this." Dominic laughed. "You think you can stop me? I've been planning this for years. I've built an army. A network. You're nothing. Less than nothing." "I'm the man who's going to kill you." Alex charged. The fight was brutal. Savage. Dominic was strong. Fast. But Alex was stronger. He slammed Dominic against the wall. "Where's Arabella? Where's Aurora's sister?" Dominic smiled. "You'll never find her. She's hidden. Protected." Alex raised his fist. "Tell me. Or I'll kill you." "Kill me. It doesn't matter. Even if you stop me, there will be others. The Vance Corporation will rise again. The Alphas will be controlled. Enslaved. It's inevitable." Alex stared at him. The darkness was surging. The hunger was overwhelming. He could kill Dominic. End the threat. But that wouldn't save Arabella. That wouldn't stop the war. He lowered his fist. "I'm not going to kill you," he said. "Not yet. You're going to tell me where Arabella is. Then you're going to rot in a cell for the rest of your life." Dominic stared at him. "You're making a mistake." "Maybe. But it's my mistake to make." Alex grabbed Dominic and dragged him out of the command center. The war was over. But the battle was just beginning. He had won this fight. But there were others waiting. And the greatest challenge was still to come.
