The power woke Alex before dawn.
It wasn't a gentle awakening. It was a surge. A flood of heat and energy that ripped him from sleep and left him gasping on the floor.
He'd been dreaming of fire. Of darkness. Of the Primus's voice whispering in his ear.
Now he was awake, and the power was still there. Pushing. Demanding.
He forced himself to breathe. To focus. To push the darkness back.
Aurora had taught him the technique. The Hollow. A place inside his mind where he could retreat when the power became too much.
He found it now. The stillness. The quiet.
The darkness receded. The power settled.
But it was still there. Waiting.
Alex stood up and walked to the gym. He needed to move. To exhaust himself. To keep the darkness at bay.
Jaxon was already there, pounding a heavy bag with brutal efficiency.
"You're up early," the big man said. "Couldn't sleep?"
"Something like that."
Jaxon nodded. "The power. It gets to you. I've seen it before."
Alex grabbed a pair of gloves. "You've seen other Alphas?"
"A few. They're not common, but they exist. Sebastian's been collecting them for years. Trying to build a resistance."
"A resistance?"
Jaxon stopped punching. "Against the Vance Corporation. Against the Aegis Initiative. Against anyone who wants to control them."
Alex absorbed the information. Sebastian had been planning this for longer than he'd realized. Building an army. Preparing for war.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because you weren't ready. You were still figuring out who you were. Still fighting your own battles."
Alex started punching the bag. The impact was satisfying. The rhythm steady.
"And now?"
"Now you're ready." Jaxon moved to the next bag. "Or at least, you're getting there."
They trained for two hours. Jaxon pushed him hard, correcting his form, forcing him to use his new strength without losing control.
By the end, Alex was exhausted. But the power was quiet. Controlled.
He showered and found Sebastian in the command center.
"We need to talk," Sebastian said. "About what comes next."
Alex sat down. "I'm listening."
"Silas is dead. But his organization is still out there. Hundreds of agents. Dozens of Alphas. They're leaderless, but they're not defeated. They'll regroup. They'll come for us."
Alex nodded. "So we hit them first. Find their leadership. Take them out."
Sebastian shook his head. "It's not that simple. We don't know who's in charge now. Silas had a second-in-command. Someone who was even more dangerous than him."
"Who?"
"His name is Dominic. He was Silas's head of security. A former special forces operative who was augmented with Alpha power. He's ruthless. Efficient. And he knows everything about Silas's operations."
Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Where is he?"
"That's the problem. He's gone underground. We've lost all trace of him."
Alex stood up. "Then we find him. We track him down and we end this."
Sebastian looked at him. "You're not going to do it alone. You're going to need help. More help than I can give you."
"What kind of help?"
"There's someone I know. An operative. She's been working against the Vance Corporation for years. She has information. Resources. She could be the key to finding Dominic."
"Then we find her."
Sebastian nodded. "Her name is Elena. She's... complicated."
"Complicated how?"
Sebastian's expression was unreadable. "She's my daughter."
The words hung in the air. Alex stared at him. "Your daughter?"
"Her mother was killed by the Vance Corporation. Elena has been fighting them ever since. But she has her own agenda. Her own methods. She doesn't always see eye to eye with me."
"And you trust her?"
Sebastian was silent for a long moment. "I trust her to do what she thinks is right. Whether that aligns with our goals is another matter."
Alex nodded slowly. "Then we find her. We offer her a deal. She helps us, and we help her."
Sebastian nodded. "I'll make the call."
The facility was quiet as Alex walked the halls. He passed the holding cells where the rescued Alphas were being treated. Men and women who had been broken and rebuilt by the Vance Corporation.
They looked at him with a mix of fear and hope. He was their savior. Their leader. The one who had come to free them.
But he was also a stranger. An unknown.
He found Nathan in the common room. The young Alpha was reading, his eyes focused on the pages.
"Hey," Alex said. "How are you holding up?"
Nathan looked up. "I'm okay. Aurora's been helping me understand my powers. It's... a lot."
"Yeah. It is."
Nathan put down his book. "I heard about Silas. About what you did. They're calling you a hero."
Alex shook his head. "I'm not a hero. I'm just someone who couldn't stand by and watch."
"But you saved us. All of us. That makes you a hero to me."
Alex felt a warmth in his chest. A connection. Nathan wasn't just another Alpha. He was a kid who had been through hell and was still fighting.
"I'm going to teach you," Alex said. "Everything I know. How to fight. How to control your power. How to survive."
Nathan's eyes widened. "Really?"
"Really. But it's going to be hard. The hardest thing you've ever done."
Nathan nodded. "I'm ready."
Alex smiled. "Good. We start tomorrow."
He left Nathan in the common room and walked to his quarters. The day had been long. Exhausting. But there was still work to do.
His comms unit buzzed. Sebastian's voice. "Alex, we have a location on Elena. She's in the city. An old warehouse district. She's agreed to meet."
"Good. I'll be ready."
He gathered his gear and headed to the garage. Jaxon was waiting, a grim expression on his face.
"You sure about this?" the big man asked. "Sebastian's daughter isn't exactly stable."
"I'm sure. She's our best lead."
Jaxon nodded. "Then let's move."
They drove through the city in silence. The streets were quiet, the darkness broken only by the occasional streetlight.
The warehouse district was abandoned. Derelict buildings. Broken windows. The smell of decay and neglect.
Alex parked the SUV and walked toward the meeting point. Jaxon covered him from a distance, his heavy weapons ready.
Elena was waiting in the shadows of an old factory. She was tall. Blonde. Beautiful in a sharp, dangerous way.
"Alexander Knight," she said. "My father's new pet."
Alex stopped walking. "I'm not anyone's pet."
"No? Then why are you here? Why are you doing his bidding?"
"I'm here because I want to stop the Vance Corporation. Because I want to find Dominic. Because I want to end this war."
Elena stepped into the light. Her eyes were cold, assessing.
"You want to end the war. That's ambitious. But do you have the stomach for it?"
"I've already killed Silas. I think I've proven my stomach."
Elena nodded slowly. "Yes. You have. But killing Silas was just the beginning. Dominic is worse. Much worse."
"Then help me find him."
Elena was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded.
"Fine. I'll help you. But on one condition."
"Name it."
"When we find Dominic, he's mine. I get to kill him. Not you. Not Sebastian. Me."
Alex studied her. The cold fury in her eyes. The burning need for revenge.
"Deal," he said.
Elena nodded. "Then we have an agreement."
She handed him a data drive. "This contains everything I know about Dominic's operations. His safe houses. His contacts. His weaknesses. Use it well."
Alex pocketed the drive. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. Dominic is dangerous. He's not like Silas. He's cunning. Patient. He's been planning this for years."
"I'll be ready."
Elena smiled. A cold, predatory expression. "I hope so. Because if you fail, he'll destroy everything you've built."
She disappeared into the shadows, leaving Alex alone.
He stood in the darkness, the data drive heavy in his pocket.
The war was far from over.
The drive contained detailed intelligence. Dominic's operations. His networks. His weaknesses.
Sebastian's team spent the next week analyzing it. Identifying targets. Planning operations.
Alex trained. With Jaxon. With Nathan. With anyone who would spar with him.
The power was growing stronger. More controlled. But the darkness was still there. A constant companion.
He was learning to live with it. To use it. To master it.
But it was a constant battle.
The first operation was a success. They hit one of Dominic's safe houses. Captured valuable intelligence. Freed a group of Alphas who were being held prisoner.
But Dominic wasn't there. He was always one step ahead.
"Elena was right," Sebastian said. "Dominic is dangerous. He's been planning for this."
Alex nodded. "Then we need to think like him. Anticipate his moves. Stay one step ahead."
"It's not that simple. Dominic has been playing this game for a decade. He knows how we think. How we operate."
"Then we change how we operate. We surprise him."
Sebastian looked at him. "You have an idea?"
Alex nodded. "Dominic is expecting us to hit his safe houses. His networks. His operations. So we do something he doesn't expect. We go after him directly."
"That's suicide."
"Maybe. But it's the only way." Alex met his eyes. "I'm not going to let Dominic win. I'm not going to let him destroy everything we've built. I'm going to end this. One way or another."
Sebastian was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.
"Fine. We'll do it your way. But we're going to need help."
"Elena."
"Elena. She knows Dominic better than anyone. She can help us find him."
Alex nodded. "Then we find her. And we end this."
The team assembled. Jaxon. Marcus. Aria. Sebastian. Elena. And Alex.
They were going to war.
The operation was planned. The target was identified. Dominic's main base. A fortified compound in the mountains.
They moved out at nightfall. The team was silent. Focused. Ready.
Alex led the way, the power singing in his veins.
The compound appeared in the distance. Lights. Guards. Fortifications.
"Remember the plan," Sebastian said. "We go in hard and fast. No hesitation. No mercy."
Alex nodded. "Let's move."
The assault began.
And the war entered its final phase.
