The morning sun cast long shadows through the cabin's dusty windows.
Alex sat at the worn wooden table, staring at the map spread before him. The desert facility was marked with a red X. Destroyed. Neutralized. But Freya's capture had done little to ease the weight pressing down on his chest.
Something was wrong. He could feel it in his bones.
The door creaked open. Sebastian walked in, his movements still stiff from his recovery. His face was pale, but his eyes were sharp. Focused.
"We need to talk," Sebastian said, sitting down across from him. "About what happened in the desert."
Alex looked up. "What about it?"
"Freya's capture was too easy. She's too smart to let herself get caught. She wanted to be taken."
Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Why?"
"I don't know. But we need to find out." Sebastian pulled out a tablet and placed it on the table. "I've been analyzing the data from the facility. There's something I missed."
"What?"
"Freya wasn't just running an Alpha division. She was running a research program. A way to create Alphas artificially."
Alex stared at him. "Artificial Alphas? That's impossible."
"It's not impossible. It's just dangerous. And Freya's research was further along than anyone realized."
Sebastian pulled up a file. "Look at this. This is a list of test subjects. Dozens of them. All Alphas. All created in a lab."
Alex scanned the list. His eyes widened. "These are... these are children."
"Yes. Children who were taken from their families. Children who were experimented on. Children who were turned into weapons."
Alex felt the darkness surge. The hunger. The rage.
He pushed it back. Forced himself to stay calm.
"We need to find them," he said. "We need to save them."
Sebastian nodded. "I know. But we need to be smart about it. Freya's research is scattered across multiple locations. We don't know where all of the test subjects are being held."
"Then we find out. We make Freya talk."
"Good luck with that." Elena's voice came from the doorway. "She's not going to tell you anything. She's too loyal to her cause."
Alex turned to face her. "Then we find another way. We track her communications. Her networks. Her contacts."
Elena shook her head. "Her networks are dead. She burned them all when she knew she was going to be caught."
"Then we wait. We watch. And we strike when the time is right."
Elena nodded slowly. "That's the plan. But we need to be patient. And we need to be careful."
"I'm always careful."
Elena smiled. "No, you're not. But that's why I trust you."
She left the room.
Sebastian watched her go. "She's right, you know. You're not careful. You're reckless. But you're also effective."
Alex nodded. "I know. And I'm trying to be better."
The interrogation room was cold. Bare. Freya sat in the center, her hands bound to the chair. Her face was bruised, her hair matted. But her eyes were still defiant.
Alex walked in and sat down across from her.
"Tell me about the research," he said. "The artificial Alphas."
Freya smiled. "You want to know about my work. That's precious."
"I want to know where the test subjects are being held."
"I'll never tell you."
Alex leaned forward. "Then I'll find out another way. And when I do, I'll destroy everything you've built."
Freya laughed. "You can try. But you'll fail. Just like you've failed at everything else."
Alex felt the darkness surge. The hunger.
"Kill me," Freya said. "Do it. I dare you."
Alex stared at her. The hunger was overwhelming. The rage was blinding.
But he held back.
"No," he said. "I'm not going to kill you. You're going to rot in this cell for the rest of your life. And you're going to watch while I destroy everything you've built."
Freya's eyes widened. "You can't do that."
"I can. And I will." Alex stood up. "You should have killed me when you had the chance."
He walked out of the room and slammed the door behind him.
Sebastian was waiting in the corridor. "That was... intense."
Alex nodded. "She's not going to talk. She's too broken."
"Then we find another way."
Alex walked away. The darkness was still there. The hunger was still calling.
But he was learning to control it.
The team gathered in the command center. Sebastian had called a meeting.
"We have a new lead," he said. "A contact in the Aegis Initiative. Someone who wants to help us."
"Who?" Alex asked.
"Her name is Luna. She was a researcher in the Alpha division. She knows about the artificial Alpha program."
"Is she trustworthy?"
Sebastian nodded. "She's been working against the Aegis Initiative for years. She wants to bring them down."
"Then we meet her. We find out what she knows."
The meeting was set for midnight. An abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city.
Alex went alone. He didn't want to spook the contact.
Luna was waiting in the shadows. She was young, no older than twenty-five. She had dark hair and sharp features.
"Alexander Knight," she said. "I've heard a lot about you."
"All lies, probably."
She smiled. "Probably. But some of them were good lies."
Alex stepped closer. "You know about the artificial Alpha program. You know where the test subjects are being held."
"I know where the main facility is. A research center in the mountains. It's heavily guarded."
"Then we need a plan. A way in."
Luna pulled out a tablet. "I have schematics. Security protocols. Schedules. Everything you need to infiltrate the facility."
Alex studied the tablet. "This is... this is incredible. How did you get this?"
"I've been working on it for years. I've been waiting for someone to use it." She met his eyes. "I've been waiting for you."
Alex felt a surge of hope. "Thank you. This changes everything."
"Don't thank me yet. The facility is dangerous. You're going to need a team."
"I have a team."
"Then you're ready."
Alex nodded. "We move out in three days."
He left the warehouse and returned to the safe house.
The team was waiting. Sebastian. Elena. Jaxon. Aria. Marcus. Nathan.
"I have a new mission," Alex said. "We're going to hit the artificial Alpha facility. We're going to shut it down. And we're going to save the test subjects."
"That's a big job," Jaxon said.
"It's the only job that matters." Alex met their eyes. "We're going to end this war. Once and for all."
The team nodded. They were with him.
The next three days were a blur of preparation. Alex worked with Marcus to analyze the schematics. He trained with Jaxon. He planned with Sebastian.
And he thought about Freya. About the artificial Alphas. About the children who had been taken.
He was going to save them. No matter what it cost.
The night before the operation, Alex found Nathan in the gym.
"Hey," he said. "You ready for tomorrow?"
Nathan nodded. "I'm ready."
"It's going to be dangerous. You could get hurt."
"I know. But I'm not afraid."
Alex smiled. "That's good. But you should be afraid. Fear keeps you alive."
Nathan nodded. "I'll remember that."
They trained together for an hour. Alex pushed Nathan hard, testing his limits. The kid was good. He had potential.
"He's going to be a great leader," Sebastian said, appearing at the doorway. "Just like you."
Alex shook his head. "He's better than me. He's got a good heart."
"That's what makes him dangerous."
Alex nodded. "I know."
The operation began at midnight. The team moved out, heading for the mountains.
The facility was impressive. Fortified. Impenetrable.
But they had the schematics. They had the plan. And they had each other.
"Remember the plan," Alex said. "We go in fast and hard. No hesitation. No mercy."
The team nodded.
Alex kicked the door open.
The fight was brutal. Savage. The guards were trained. Professional.
But Alex was an Alpha. And he was angry.
He cut through the first line of guards, his power blazing. The darkness was surging, but he was in control.
The command center was ahead. Alex could see the test subjects. Children. Huddled in their cages.
"Jaxon!" he yelled. "Get them out!"
Jaxon moved, his massive frame crashing through the cages. The children were free.
"On the floor!" Alex screamed. "Everyone down!"
The children dropped to the ground. The guards fell.
Alex stood in the middle of the c*****e, his power blazing.
"It's over," he said. "We're leaving."
The team moved. They grabbed the children and ran. The facility was collapsing behind them, a pillar of fire against the night sky.
They emerged into the night. Alive. Free.
The children were safe. The artificial Alpha program was destroyed.
But the war was far from over.
Alex stood on the ridge, staring out at the mountains.
"We did it," Sebastian said, appearing beside him. "We actually did it."
Alex nodded. "We did. But there's still so much more to do."
"I know. But we can rest. Just for a while."
Alex shook his head. "We can't rest. Not yet. There are still people out there who need us."
Sebastian placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know. But you need to take care of yourself too. You can't save everyone if you're dead."
Alex smiled. "I'll remember that."
He walked down the ridge and into the camp.
The children were being treated. The team was resting.
Alex watched them all, his heart full.
He had come so far. Fought so hard. But the war was still raging.
And he was going to win it. No matter what it cost.
He turned to walk away, but something stopped him.
A voice. Familiar. Cold.
"Hello, Alex."
He turned around. Freya was standing behind him, a smile on her face.
"Did you really think you could stop me?" she asked. "Did you really think you could win?"
Alex felt the darkness surge.
"You're supposed to be in a cell," he said.
"I escaped. And now I'm going to destroy everything you've built."
She raised her hand. A weapon. Aimed at his chest.
Alex moved. Faster than humanly possible. He was on her before she could pull the trigger.
"I'm not going to let you win," he said.
"Then kill me. Do it."
Alex stared at her. The darkness was surging. The hunger was overwhelming.
But he held back.
"No," he said. "I'm not going to kill you. You're going to watch while I destroy everything you've built. And then you're going to rot in a cell for the rest of your life."
Freya laughed. "You can't destroy what I've built. It's everywhere. In every government. In every military. In every corporation. You can't stop me."
"Maybe not. But I can make you hurt."
Alex pulled the trigger.
Freya fell. Her eyes were wide with shock.
"I told you," Alex said. "I'm not going to kill you. But I'm going to make you suffer."
He turned and walked away.
The darkness was surging. The hunger was overwhelming.
But he was in control.
For now.
