The Unexpected Truth

The cell door slammed shut behind Alex. Freya was on the floor, her body broken and bleeding. The guards had been rough. Too rough. Alex had ordered them to be careful, but they hadn't listened. He knelt beside her, checking her pulse. Weak. Thready. She was dying. "Get Aurora," he yelled. "Now!" The guards scrambled. Alex pressed his hands against Freya's wounds, trying to stop the bleeding. "You're not going to die," he said. "Not yet. Not like this." Freya's eyes fluttered open. "Why... why are you helping me?" "Because I'm not a monster. Unlike you." She laughed, a weak, bloody sound. "You're wrong. You're exactly like me. We're both killers. We're both monsters." Alex shook his head. "No. I'm not. I'm something else." Aurora arrived, her face pale. She pushed Alex aside and went to work. "She's lost a lot of blood," she said. "I need to operate. Now." Alex nodded and stepped back. He watched as Aurora worked, her movements precise and methodical. It took two hours. Freya was stable, but barely. Alex sat in the corridor, staring at the wall. The darkness was still surging. The hunger was still calling. He pushed it back. Stayed in control. "She's going to make it," Aurora said, appearing beside him. "But she needs to rest." Alex nodded. "Thank you." "I didn't do it for her. I did it for you." Alex looked at her. "For me?" "You're not a killer, Alex. Not really. If you had let her die, it would have destroyed you." Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "Maybe I'm not a killer. But I'm not a hero either. I'm just someone who's trying to do the right thing." "That's what makes you a hero." Alex shook his head. "I don't think so." He left her and walked to the command center. Sebastian was there, analyzing intelligence. "Freya's alive," Sebastian said. "The Aegis Initiative knows. They'll be coming for her." "Then we need to be ready." Sebastian nodded. "I've already started preparing. But we need to talk about something else." "What?" "Freya mentioned something. Before she lost consciousness. She said there was someone else. Someone above her." Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Who?" "She didn't say. But she was scared. More scared than I've ever seen her." Alex was silent for a moment. Then he said, "We need to find out who it is. And we need to stop them." "I agree. But it's not going to be easy. Freya was at the top of the Aegis Initiative. If there's someone above her, they're even more powerful." Alex nodded. "I know. But I'm not going to let that stop me." He left the command center and walked to the medical bay. Freya was awake, her eyes staring at the ceiling. "You're still alive," he said. Freya turned her head. "You saved me. Why?" "Because I needed information. And because I'm not a monster." Freya was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "There's someone above me. Someone who's been pulling the strings the whole time." "Who?" "I don't know. I've never met them. But they control everything. The Aegis Initiative. The Vance Corporation. Everything." Alex felt his blood run cold. "How is that possible?" "I don't know. But it's true. They're the one who orchestrated the ambush. They're the one who targeted you. They've been watching you for years." Alex stared at her. "Why?" "Because you're the last Alpha. The last of the Primus's line. And they need you to complete their plan." "What plan?" "I don't know. But it's big. Bigger than anything you can imagine." Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "How do I find them?" "You can't. They're a ghost. No name. No face. No trace." "Then I'll find a way." Freya smiled. A weak, sad expression. "I hope you do. Because if you don't, everyone you love is going to die." The words hit Alex like a physical blow. Everyone he loved. He had people he loved now. Aurora. Sebastian. Elena. Nathan. The team. He couldn't let them die. "I'm going to stop them," he said. "Whatever it takes." Freya nodded. "I know you will. That's why I'm telling you this." She closed her eyes and fell asleep. Alex stood there for a long moment, staring at her. The darkness was surging. The hunger was calling. But he pushed it back. Stayed in control. He had work to do. The team gathered in the command center. Alex told them everything. "There's someone above Freya," he said. "Someone who's been controlling everything from the shadows. We need to find them." "How?" Elena asked. "We don't even know who they are." "I don't know yet. But we're going to find out." Alex turned to Marcus. "I need you to analyze everything we have. Communications. Financial records. Personnel files. Everything." Marcus nodded. "I'm on it." Alex turned to the rest of the team. "We need to be careful. The person above Freya is powerful. More powerful than anything we've faced before." "Then we'll be careful," Sebastian said. "But we'll also be prepared." Alex nodded. "Good. Let's get to work." The next few days were a blur of activity. Alex worked with the team to analyze the data. He trained with Jaxon. He planned with Sebastian. And he thought about the person above Freya. Who were they? What did they want? And why had they been targeting him? He found Sebastian in the command center. "We need to talk." Sebastian looked up. "About what?" "The person above Freya. I think they're connected to my past. To my family." Sebastian was silent for a long moment. "What makes you say that?" "I don't know. Just a feeling." Alex shook his head. "Something about the way Freya talked about them. It felt... personal." Sebastian nodded slowly. "It's possible. We don't know much about your family. About the Primus's line." "Then we find out. We search for anything. Any records. Any history." Sebastian nodded. "I'll get started." Alex left the command center and walked to his quarters. He sat on the bed, staring at the wall. The darkness was surging. The hunger was calling. But he pushed it back. Stayed in control. He was going to find the person above Freya. He was going to stop them. And he was going to protect the people he loved. The night was quiet. Alex lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. The darkness was still there, but it was quiet. Controlled. He was about to drift off to sleep when he heard a sound. A scraping. A whisper. He was on his feet in an instant, his senses stretched to their limit. Someone was in the corridor. Someone who didn't belong. He moved silently, his power blazing. The darkness was surging, but he was in control. He found the intruder in the command center. A woman. Dark hair. Sharp features. She was searching through the files, her movements quick and efficient. "Who are you?" Alex demanded. She turned, her eyes widening. "Alexander Knight. I've heard a lot about you." "Who are you?" he repeated. "My name is Luna. I'm here to help you." Alex stared at her. "You're the one who gave us the schematics. The artificial Alpha facility." "Yes. And now I'm here to give you something else. Information about the person above Freya." Alex stepped closer. "What do you know?" "I know who they are. I know what they want. And I know why they've been targeting you." Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Tell me." Luna pulled out a data drive. "It's all on here. But I need to warn you. Once you know the truth, there's no going back. It's going to change everything." Alex took the drive. The weight of it was crushing. "I'm ready," he said. Luna nodded. "Then I'll see you soon." She disappeared into the shadows. Alex stood in the middle of the command center, the data drive in his hand. He was about to learn the truth. The real truth. He inserted the drive into the terminal. The screen flickered to life. A face appeared. A woman. Old. Powerful. Her eyes burning with a fire that seemed to pierce through the screen. "Hello, Alexander," she said. "I've been waiting for you. My name is Arabella. And I am the one who's been pulling the strings." Alex stared at the screen. Arabella. The name meant nothing to him. But her face. Her eyes. They were familiar. Hauntingly familiar. "I am your grandmother," she said. "And I have a lot to tell you." Alex felt the world tilt beneath his feet. His grandmother. The Primus's line. The last Alpha. And now this. "Come to me," she said. "Find me. And I will tell you everything." The screen went dark. Alex stood in the silence, his heart pounding. The person above Freya was his grandmother. His own flesh and blood. And she was coming for him. The darkness surged. The hunger. The rage. But this time, Alex didn't push it back. He let it in. He was going to find her. He was going to stop her. And he was going to end this war. Once and for all.
