The Grandmother's Shadow

2019 Words
The screen went dark, but Alex couldn't move. His grandmother. The woman who had been orchestrating everything. The one who had killed his men. The one who had hunted him. The one who had turned his entire life into a lie. She was family. Alex's hands trembled. The darkness surged inside him, hungry and wild. He gripped the edge of the terminal, forcing himself to breathe. In. Out. In. Out. The Hollow. He needed to find the Hollow. He closed his eyes and reached for that still place inside his mind. The quiet. The calm. It took longer than usual, but he found it. The darkness receded. The power settled. But the rage remained. Sebastian appeared in the doorway. His face was pale, his eyes wide. "I heard everything," he said. "Through the comms." Alex turned to face him. "You knew. You knew about her." Sebastian was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded. "I suspected. I didn't know for certain." "All this time. All this time, you knew there was a possibility. And you didn't tell me." "I wanted to protect you. I wanted to be sure." Alex felt the rage surge again. Hot. Blinding. "Protect me? By keeping secrets? By lying to me?" "By giving you time to become strong enough to face the truth." Sebastian stepped closer. "Arabella is not just your grandmother, Alex. She's the most dangerous Alpha who has ever lived. She's been alive for over two hundred years. She's built an empire that spans the globe. And she's been watching you since the day you were born." Alex stared at him. "Two hundred years?" "Her Alpha power is unlike anything we've ever seen. She doesn't just have strength and speed. She has the ability to influence minds. To control people. To see into their thoughts." Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "She can read minds?" "Not exactly. But she can plant suggestions. Make people do things they wouldn't normally do. She's been manipulating people for centuries. That's how she built her empire." Alex sank into a chair. The weight of the revelation was crushing. "All this time," he said. "All this time, she's been controlling everything. The Aegis Initiative. The Vance Corporation. Freya. All of it." Sebastian nodded. "And now she's come for you. She wants you to join her. To become her heir." "She said she wants to tell me the truth." "She will. But it will be her truth. A version of events designed to manipulate you." Alex looked up. "How do you know all of this?" "Because I used to work for her." Sebastian's voice was quiet. "I was her right hand for over a decade. I helped her build her empire. And then I realized what she really was. What she was planning. And I ran." Alex felt the betrayal like a knife in his chest. "You worked for her. You helped her." "I was young. Foolish. I believed in her vision. I thought she was building a better world. But then I saw the truth. She wasn't building a better world. She was building a prison. A world where Alphas ruled over humans. Where she ruled over everyone." Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "Why did you come to me? Why did you help me?" "Because I knew you were different. You had the power of the Primus, but you also had his heart. You could be the leader the Alphas needed. The one who would break her hold on the world." Alex shook his head. "I'm not a leader. I'm just a soldier." "No. You're so much more than that. And now it's time for you to prove it." Alex stood up. "What do I do?" "Find her. Go to her. But don't let her manipulate you. She'll try to twist your mind. Make you doubt everything you know." "How do I stop her?" "Trust your instincts. Trust the people who love you. And never forget who you really are." Alex nodded slowly. "When do I go?" "Now. She's expecting you. If you wait, she'll come to us. And we won't be able to stop her." The team assembled in the command center. Alex told them everything. The truth about Arabella. The truth about his heritage. The truth about the war. "This is insane," Elena said. "You're going to walk into a trap." "Maybe. But it's the only way." "Then we're coming with you," Jaxon said. "We're not letting you go alone." Alex shook his head. "No. She wants me. Not you. If you come, she'll kill you. She won't give me a choice." "We don't care," Aria said. "We're with you." Alex looked at them. At his team. His family. "No," he said. "I need you here. I need you to protect the others. To keep fighting. If something happens to me, I need you to carry on." Sebastian stepped forward. "He's right. We need to stay here and hold the line." Elena was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded. "Fine. But if you die, I'm going to find your grandmother and I'm going to kill her myself." Alex smiled. "I wouldn't expect anything less." He left the command center and walked to his quarters. He needed to prepare. To think. Nathan was waiting for him. "You're leaving," the young Alpha said. "To meet your grandmother." Alex nodded. "I'm going to end this. One way or another." Nathan stepped closer. "Let me come with you. I can help." "No. You're too young. Too inexperienced. I need you to stay here and protect the others." Nathan's eyes were fierce. "I'm not going to let you do this alone." "You won't have a choice." Alex placed a hand on his shoulder. "You're the future, Nathan. The future of the Alphas. I need you to be strong. To lead. To carry on if something happens to me." Nathan was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "I'll do it. But I'm going to be there when you come back." Alex smiled. "I know you will." He left Nathan and walked to the garage. Sebastian was there, a black SUV waiting. "This is a risk," Sebastian said. "She could kill you the moment you arrive." "I know. But I have to try." Sebastian handed him a small device. "A tracker. If something goes wrong, we'll find you." Alex pocketed the device. "Thank you." "Don't thank me. Just come back alive." Alex climbed into the SUV and drove away. The journey took three hours. The facility was hidden in the mountains. Remote. Isolated. A fortress. Alex parked the SUV and walked to the entrance. The doors opened before he could knock. Arabella was waiting inside. She was old, but not frail. Her eyes burned with a fire that seemed to pierce through him. "Alexander," she said. "I'm so glad you came." Alex stepped forward. "I'm here. Now tell me the truth." Arabella smiled. "The truth. Yes. That's what you want. That's what you've always wanted." She led him through the facility. The corridors were clean. Bright. High-tech. "I know you're angry," she said. "I know you feel betrayed. But I had my reasons. Everything I did, I did for you." "For me? You killed my men. You hunted me. You turned my entire life into a lie." "I did it to protect you. To make you strong. To prepare you for what's coming." Alex stopped walking. "What's coming?" Arabella turned to face him. "The end of the world. The collapse of civilization. A war that will destroy everything we've built." Alex stared at her. "What are you talking about?" "The Alphas are just the beginning. There are other beings. Older beings. Creatures that have been sleeping for millennia. And they're waking up." Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of creatures?" "Ones that make Alphas look like children. Ones that will destroy everything in their path. I've been preparing for them for centuries. Building an army. Creating weapons. Turning humans into Alphas so they can fight." Alex shook his head. "That's insane. You're insane." "Insane? No, Alexander. I'm the only one who sees the truth. The only one who's prepared. And I need you to help me." "Help you? You want me to join you? To become like you?" "I want you to become what you were always meant to be. The leader of the Alphas. The savior of humanity." Alex laughed. A harsh, bitter sound. "You want me to be a monster." "I want you to be a hero. But heroes sometimes have to do monstrous things." Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "I'm not going to join you. I'm not going to be your weapon." Arabella's expression didn't change. "I knew you'd say that. That's why I've prepared a backup plan." She raised her hand. The doors behind Alex slammed shut. "You're not leaving," she said. "Not until you understand. Not until you agree." Alex felt the darkness surge. The power. The hunger. "I'm not going to agree," he said. "Not ever." "Then I'll make you." Arabella's eyes began to glow. "I'll make you understand. I'll make you see the truth." She reached out with her mind. Alex felt it. A presence. A power. Trying to push into his thoughts. He fought it. Pushed back. The darkness surged, protecting him. "You can't control me," he said. "I'm not like the others." "No. You're stronger. That's why I need you." She pressed harder. "Surrender, Alexander. Let me in. Let me help you." "No!" The darkness exploded out of him. A wave of power that sent Arabella staggering backward. She stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Impossible," she said. "You're not supposed to be able to do that." "I'm not supposed to be anything," Alex said. "I'm just me. And I'm not going to let you control me." Arabella recovered quickly. Her eyes narrowed. "Very well," she said. "We'll do this the hard way." She lunged at him. Alex was ready. He met her charge, his power blazing. The fight was brutal. Savage. Arabella was strong. Fast. Older than anything he'd ever faced. But Alex was stronger. Faster. And he was angry. He slammed her against the wall. "It's over. Tell me how to stop the war. Tell me how to save everyone." Arabella laughed. "You can't save everyone. You can only save yourself." "Then I'll find another way." He released her and stepped back. The darkness was surging. The hunger was overwhelming. But he pushed it back. Stayed in control. "Leave," he said. "Leave and never come back. If I see you again, I'll kill you." Arabella stared at him. "You're making a mistake." "Maybe. But it's my mistake to make." Arabella nodded slowly. "Very well. But we'll meet again, Alexander. And when we do, I hope you'll be ready." She disappeared into the shadows. Alex stood in the middle of the facility, his heart pounding. The darkness was still surging. The hunger was still calling. But he was in control. He turned and walked out into the night. The team was waiting for him when he returned. Sebastian. Elena. Jaxon. Aria. Marcus. Nathan. "We thought you were dead," Jaxon said. "I'm not that easy to kill." Alex smiled. "But we have a problem. A big one." He told them everything. About the creatures. About the end of the world. About Arabella's plan. "We need to stop her," Sebastian said. "Before it's too late." Alex nodded. "I know. But we need to be smart about it. She's powerful. More powerful than anything we've faced." "Then we need allies," Elena said. "More allies." Alex nodded. "I know someone. Luna. She has information. And she might be able to help us." "Then we find her." Sebastian stepped forward. "We end this." Alex looked at his team. At his family. "We're going to win," he said. "Together." The team nodded. They were with him. The war was far from over. But Alex was ready. He was Alpha. And he would never stop fighting.
