“Miss. Brooks if you can’t pay attention you can leave my class” I had the professor say. I looked up from my phone. She was standing there with her arms crossed and she was tapping her foot at me with a impatient persistence. I placed my phone in my bag and focused on the rest of class. It was very hard to focus typical when I knew that Adam was texting me during class. Adam and I spent days texting and calling each other but there was never any talk or anything about us meeting up again. After class finished I hurried to get to work. The shop was very busy when I walked in. I looked at the faces of my workers and they looked flustered. I hurried and put my stuff down and throw on an apron. And I assisted in the places that I was needed. After about a half an hour we had slow down enough for us to go back to normal work related tasks. Paige wanted to talk to me about this big party going on tonight but I wasn’t worried about that I was just worried about working my shift. I started to wash coffee cups when the bell rang. I looked up to see Adam standing there. I smiled and then giggled. She came over to the counter. He rested his arms against it as he leaned forward.
“ it’s very nice to see you today” he smile at me. “You have plans tonight” I shook my head no. “Well now you do! When do you get off” he questioned me.
“Seven.” I smiled.
“Okay pick you here at 8” and without letting me answer he was gone. Yay another date with Adam.
“Hey I will cover if you want to take out early” Paige said. I smiled and thanked her. I worked hard to get everything I need to do done before I took out at 6:30. I hurried back to the dorms and got ready. It took me a long while to pick out that perfect outfit. Finally I found it. I walked back to the coffee shop at about 7:30. I stood outside waiting on Adam to show up. I could see him coming up the sidewalk and smile at him. He looked very handsome tonight.
“You ready?” He questioned stopping in front of me. Sliding his hands into his pockets and then rocking back and forth on his heels. I nodded and he offered to take my hand. I was still hesitant with him and I wasn’t sure why. I took his hand and we started to walk now the sidewalk back in the direction he just came from.
“So where are we going” I questioned him.
“You very inquisitive Huh?” He chuckled. “You will see” he said looking at. ”Do you trust me” he questioned me with an unusual smile. It took me a moment to answer him because I was really studying his face for any clue as to where we could be going or what we could be doing. But his poker face was very unbelievably good.
“Well you haven’t given me any reason not to so yeah I guess so“ he started to laugh at my answer. He enter-locked his fingers with mine this put me at some kind of weird ease. We came to a stop at the end of the sidewalk and in front of us was a burnt orange 1969 Ford Mustang. My father may have been a drunk but on a few occasions he was sober he taught me a deep love for classic cars.
“God she is a beauty. The owner is a lucky person” I said as he let go of my head and walked over to the car opening the door.
“Want to be a lucky girl that rides in the beauty” he said. I giggled with excitement. I wasn’t sure if I was more excited to be in the car or going out with Adam again. After I slid in he shut the door and hurried to the other side. As he pulled the door closed he stuck the key in the ignition and started her up. The car roared to life the sound of its engine gave me goosebumps. It took everything inside of me to hide the excitement I was feeling right now.“So do you always get into cars with people your don’t know very well” his words took away my excitement. A odd kind of fear set in over my body. He was right I didn’t know him very well and now I was in the car with him heading to a place I had no idea where it was. I moved closer to the door as he started to increase his speed. He looked at me and noticed that I was being a little standoffish now.
“You okay?” I wasn’t sure if I was prepared to answer his question. I knew that if I answered it in a way he didn’t like that he would stop the car. And to be completely honest with you I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that either. I was too busy enjoying this American classic car to want the ride to stop.
“Yes” I said in a excited tone or at least the best one I could muster up. I guess he brought What I was saying because he didn’t stop the car. I started to notice that we were leaving campus and then heading out of town on the highway. I know that I should be at least somewhat nervous but to be honest I wasn’t. It was like in some strange familiar way I had known him for years and this had been like the millionth time we had ever hung out together so I guess I wasn’t too bothered by the situation. He made me feel peaceful and free from all of the worries and the drama of the world going on around us. Which for me that seem to be a hard tax to do so good for him. We had just reached the outside of town when he looked at me and smiled. He made a right turn into the longest gravel driveway I had ever seen. After going down it for about 100 yards I noticed a big white Victorian house at the end of it. There were big oak and elm trees lining both sides of the gravel driveway this house looked like it was straight out of a horror movie. I gripped the door handle and he chuckled.
“ so this is the oldest house in town. The rumors are that it is haunted by a widow in white. She Romes it’s halls looking for her husband who died years before she did.” He said making a ghost noise. The closer we got to the house the more I noticed the twinkly lights hanging in the trees and tents in front of the house with beer kegs and what looked like to be an outside bar. Was this nut really taking me to a party. Oh boy! I was in no way prepared for a party. But I guess now is the time to suck it up buttercup as my grandma used to say. “You like parties right?” I just smiled at his question.
“ it’s our annual white widow bash.” He said making the ghost noises again. I have to admit that I wasn’t exactly thrilled to be attending a fraternity party. I guess in order to hang out with Adam I had to put up with the parties too. “This party is by invite only. So can I have your wrist please“ It would be a lie if I told you I wasn’t hesitant about giving him my wrist but finally I caved and slowly gave it to him. He slid a white rubber bracelet onto my wrist and spun it around to where the word widow in big black letters was written across it.
“You need this to go in and out of the party so if you lose it they will kick you out“ he said with a joking chuckle. He parked the car under one of the big oak trees. He hurried around to help me out and just as I stepped out of the car a blonde boy came running from across the yard at us. “ Adam“ he said panting he bent over and placed his Hands on his knees. “ everything is ready“ he finally choked out.
Adam smiled at his words and then took my hand and started to lead me around the house. When we reached the back of the house I could see a lake off in the distance with a white gazebo on the lake shore. It looked like there was lights and a rug with all kinds of pillows and some snacks out there. How romantic is this. Picnics must be his forte.
“ I figured we could hang out out here for a while before the party really started going” he said and I smiled shyly. He led me to the pillows under the gazebo and it’s twinkling lights. “ so tell me a secret that no one else knows“ He asked reaching into the little cooler in front of us. He pulled out two beers and opened both cans and handed me one.
“ Hmm, A secret that no one else knows. Well I have a slight obsession with classic cars so I was probably more excited to be inside of your car than I was with you tonight“ I joked. Apparently he thought it was funny because he laughed
“ it’s hard to find a woman that can appreciate a classic car. So tell me what is your dream car Missy Sue “ I sat there and really thought about his question even though I knew the answer was an easy one
“ Chevy nova SS“ he smirked.
“Very nice.” I could tell that he was impressed by my knowledge of cars. I wasn’t trying to impress him though I was just being myselF.
“ so tell me a secret about Adam that no one knows“ he looked off onto the lake as if my question made him somewhat uncomfortable. “ you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to“
“ no no I will answer you answered mine. Umm I have never been in love before“ I truly thought that Adam Jacobs would have at least known what love was but now find out that he had never been in love was mine blowing.
“ well don’t worry neither of I” I took a big gulp of my beer in my uncomfortable confession. “ so tell me what do you do in your free time besides all of this” I said waving my hand around. He chuckled at me mentioning his party life
“ well I volunteer three times a week at the animal hospital. And then I have a little brother from the big Brothers big sisters program. And lastly besides lacrosse I play basketball on Tuesday nights at the Y. Plus on the nights that I’m not at the animal hospital I work“ I choked on the drink of beer I just took
“ Lord are you sure you have time to date” As soon as I said it I realized how cruel my joke could actually sounded. He guzzle down a drink of his beer.
“ well ma’am what do you do when you’re not busy hustling and bustling coffee cups“ he joked.
“ sadly my life isn’t as exciting as yours is. When I am not working at the coffee shop which I tend to spend a lot of time there. I volunteer at this program the school district has for kids of divorced parents. Helping them navigate what it’s like to have parents that are divorced. Between work and school and that program I don’t really do much else let alone have time for anything .” I said.
“ now who doesn’t have time for dating“ he joked back.
“ it’s not what guys are lining up to take me on dates anyway” I answered him and a feisty voice.
“ hold up you mean to tell me that guys aren’t lining up around the block to take you out that’s bullshit“ he said moving closer to me.
“ it seems to be nowadays the only conversation guys have with me is how they like their coffee“ I joked.
“ADAM!” A guy yelled from across the lawn again. But this time it was a different one. Adam waved the guy over to us. As he began to run closer Adam stood up extending his hand to me to help me up. I gracefully took his hand and stood up like a princess I’m just kidding I stood up.
“This is Lincoln“ he said as a tall slender blonde came to a stop in front of us. “He has been my best bud for the past 10 years.” Lincoln stuck his pale hand out to shake mine. “Link, this is Peyton” Lincoln smiles and smacked Adam on the back.
“ Coffee shop girl very nice man very nice“ Lincoln said play punching Adam’s arm. I didn’t know whether to be pissed or saddened by the fact that I was just referred to as the coffee shop girl. Then my cheeks became flesh when I realized that he was talking to me about his friends he may have not mentioned my name but he was talking about me. I looked at Adam in this moment. I noticed that his cheeks were just as flushed as mine the embarrassment that was just brought upon him by his friend was a little unsettling for me I needed to fix the situation and fix it fast..
“Yep, Coffee shop girl at your service“ I joked trying to ease Adam’s embarrassment
“ oh man, I like her” Lincoln said giving me a side hug. “ I think you’ll fit in just fine” he said.
“Umm, where is Lexi? I want her to meet Peyton “ Adam said running his hand nervously through his hair. You could hear the music start to stop from inside the house. It sounded like the party was rolling. Lincoln pointed up towards the house and then chuckled.
“ I think she may be in there” Adam grabbed my hand and led me towards the house. The back door was open, it appeared that they had some kind of light machine mixed with a fog machine going on the inside. The music was loud almost overpowering to the ears. But whatever song is playing made me wanna dance. Adam let me through the crowded house into the kitchen. Where a petite blonde girl was dancing in an empty space where the dining room table should be. He hollered her name a few times and she didn’t look up. Lincoln walked over and snapped his fingers in front of her face. Her eyes jolted and met mine. She smiled sweetly.
“Lexi” she said pointing to herself. “Your Peyton! Do you want a shot” I looked at Adam to see if she was serious. He smiled nervously and nodded
“Umm hell ya” my reaction took Adam by surprise. He probably thought that I had never taken a shot in my life. She poured me a shot of tequila, I looked into her eyes and she smiled she cleaned her glass to mine and then yelled bottoms up b***h. The tequila set my mouth on fire. It burned the whole way down my throat, I took a big bite out of the lime that she given me.
“ THAT A GIRL!” she yelled tapping me on the back. “ wanna dance?“ she said pointing back to the space that she just came from. I grabbed her arm and pulled her back towards the center of the room. I began to move my hips back-and-forth to the music as the tequila raced through my veins. I needed more if I was going to keep up with her.
“I need a drink” I told Adam as he came closer to me. He nodded and disappeared into the crowd. A little bit of uneasiness sat in as I realize that I was alone with strangers but I was at a party so I guess it really didn’t matter. I kept dancing with Lexi waiting for Adam’s return. Lexi was a very beautiful girl. Her blonde hair was sandy and wavy and even though Summer what is still four months away she had that Summerglow about her.
“Your wish is my command ma’am“ Adam said handing me a red solo cup. If I learned one thing from having an alcoholic father it was always smell your drink. I could smell the tequila and vodka and a hint of maybe pink lemonade.
“What is it?” I whispered in his ear.
“ The girls call it sip me naked. It’s tequila vodka lemon and pink lemonade. If you want to get f****d up that’s the Way to go. that’s what the girls say anyway” I took a few big gulps of the liquid. It was like stabbing a white hot Branding iron down my throat But I rocked it like a champ. Adam‘s eyes became wide with amazement. I think I may have completely surprised him with a side of me. Hopefully I didn’t scare him away. I pulled him up close behind me and began to sway my hips from side to side feeling him behind me. He moved closer and the makeshift dance floor began to fill up with more people.
“ANOTHER SHOT?” Lexi said handing me another shot glass. I clicked it to hers and let the liquor burn my throat. I started to feel the liquor in my toes. I could feel my cheeks flushing. I spun around to see Adam’s face but I spun a little too quickly and lost my balance. Thankfully, Adam was right there to save the day. He caught me in his arms. We sat there for a moment and the rest of the party just disappeared. I found myself getting lost drunkenly in his eyes. That’s when I decided just to go for it I slid my fingers into his hair pulling his lips to mine. He didn’t resist and I felt him kiss me back. I couldn’t decipher whether it was the alcohol or the adrenaline from this passionate kiss that surged all over my body. I pulled away and the music and the people returned. The music pulsated in my ears loud enough to make my whole body hurt.
“Umm, I think it’s time to go” holding my head in my hands. The look on Adam space went to concerned. He grabbed my hand with one hand and underneath my elbow with the other and guided me towards the front door. He whistled to Lincoln To get his help to navigate through the crowd. All I could hear was Lincolns loud voice shouting for people to get out of the way. Eventually I felt the cool air of the night hit my face. I took a deep breath of it into my lungs feeling free from the suffocating party air. I wobbled slowly across the grass thankfully Adam was there to brace me if I fell. Eventually I made it to his car he open the door and helped me slide in
“Where to Miss?” He said in a funky British accent. I giggled at his humor. The roar of the car made my head pound. I placed my head between my knees in an effort to help me from getting sick.
“Parker hall“ he started driving. I lifted my head up to look out the window that was when the street lights began to blur and my eyes became heavy. I knew that I didn’t want to fall asleep in the car with him but I felt my body uncontrollably drifting that way. I leaned my head back and closed by eyes listening to the music in the background. I slowly drifted off to sleep where I could hear nothing and it was peaceful. I hope it was safe for me to fall asleep in the car with him I guess we’ll find out .
