Chapter 1 I'm Not a Criminal
In the distant future, Earth has become a vast continent with countless nations, each led by a president whose system of officials closely resembles the English monarchy. The common language is English, though local dialects add unique charm to each region.
On a bright, clear day, in the bustling gaming center of the kingdom of Ville, a fierce virtual battle is taking place.
Standing before a computer is a young girl wearing a cheap tank top and athletic shorts. Her appearance is delicate and attractive, her expression focused, but she isn’t truly playing the game. Instead, she’s skillfully manipulating the game—making money, or rather, “conning” others to pay her. Heh! Her name is Leona, 18 years old, from a poor family, so poor she could practically boil water in an iron pot. Yet, she’s remarkably clever and learns fast. No matter what she tries, she excels at it. Dropped out of school? So what? She can still make money while improving herself.
“Leona, you’re amazing! You scammed someone again and made so much money!” Her best friend, Elina, looked at the growing balance of virtual currency in Leona’s account with admiration sparkling in her eyes.
Elina, also from a poor family, shares similar experiences and goals with Leona, and the two are like sisters.
“Scammed? This isn’t scamming,” Leona said with a smile, her hands deftly working the keyboard. “This is skill, technique!”
“Right, right, it’s definitely technique!” Elina nearly jumped up, looking as though she wanted to hug Leona in excitement. “Leona, I want a big meal!”
“No problem!” Leona chuckled, playfully pinching Elina’s cheek. This girl was a true foodie; she feared one day she might be tricked away by some trafficker. She shook her head and refocused on her game.
Just then, a team of fully-armed soldiers entered the hall in formation, their presence commanding attention, as if prepared for any sudden development. Customers throughout the hall paused, their gazes fixed on the soldiers.
Leona, immersed in her world with headphones on, didn’t notice the shift in the atmosphere.
Elina’s eyes lit up. She’d seen this kind of scene on TV countless times but never expected to witness it in real life.
She reached out, about to pull Leona along to watch the spectacle when suddenly, the officer with the golden badge on his chest scanned the hall and locked his gaze on Leona.
He strode forward, and as attention focused on them, he swiftly grabbed Leona, lifting her easily as if capturing prey.
The officer removed her headphones and ordered sternly, “Take her away!”
Elina was stunned, and Leona was even more shocked. One thought echoed in her mind: Take me away… take me away…
Leona instinctively looked around, taking in the uniforms, the gleaming badges, and quickly grasped the situation. Panicked, she shouted, “I didn’t do anything wrong! Aside from a few small brawls and scamming a bit of game currency, I’ve done nothing bad! I’m not a criminal! I’m a good citizen! You can’t arrest me!”
Fighting? Scamming game currency? A con artist?
The surrounding crowd’s attention honed in on Leona, making her feel embarrassed. She mentally mocked herself—feeling “guilty,” maybe?
Ha, she laughed inwardly. This was the Royal Guard; they wouldn’t arrest her for such trivial things. Was she being dense?
Nevertheless, Leona forced a smile, softly asking, “Respected officer, may I ask what I did wrong? Why am I being taken away?”
“Yeah! Leona hasn’t done anything wrong! Why are you arresting her?” Elina recovered and stepped in front of Leona, angrily protesting, “Even if you’re the Royal Guard, you can’t just arrest people without evidence! If you keep this up, I’ll report you!”
Leona froze. Report? Report the Royal Guard? Who would take that case?
Judging by the disdainful glances from those around them, people thought Elina might’ve lost her senses too.
Yet Elina seemed oblivious to the gravity of the situation, standing firmly, hands on her hips, and shouting indignantly, “Aren’t you afraid of the police? I’m telling you, Leona’s our leader; we have a whole group of brothers here!”
“If you don’t let her go, I’ll bring them here to teach you a lesson!” Elina’s eyes were fierce, as if entirely unaware of the circumstances.
Leona nearly sighed in defeat. This girl had no idea what she was doing. She could only shake her head with a bitter smile.
At that point, the officer looked mildly impatient, frowning as he signaled his subordinate, evidently unwilling to waste further time on Elina’s outburst. However, Elina kept a tight grip on the officer’s sleeve, loudly continuing her protest.
“Aren’t you afraid of the police? Of them coming after you? Leona’s our boss around here, and no one dares to mess with her!”
Just as Leona resigned herself to her fate, ready to go, the officer suddenly stopped, turned around, and said icily, “Oh, right, the commander said, you need to pass out first.”
“Huh?” Leona was puzzled, but before she could react, the officer swiftly struck her.
In that instant, Leona finally understood what he meant by “pass out.” She let out a wry smile as her eyes rolled back and her body went limp.
