Episode 1 - 'Riding the Korean Wave'
The plane pierced through the clouds as it began to descend. Looking out the window to see the mountainous terrain and little tiny cars driving over the numerous bridges that connected the island to the mainland, James was struck with nostalgia. 'Ladies and gentleman, we are now beginning our descent into Incheon international airport, the current local time is 6:45 am. Once again on behalf of Asiana Airlines, we thank you for flying with us and look forward to you traveling with us again in the near future...cabin crew to your seats' James sat back and began to fasten his seat belt while placing the tray in the upright position, closing his eyes and biting his lower lip he began to imagine what life would be like to live in South Korea. How long he had wanted to live and work in South Korea, all those years studying about Korea, and the Korean language would finally be useful. The loud sound of the trolly rattling down the narrow aisle of the aircraft wasn't a bother to James at that moment. Lost in a trance, the stewardess tapped him on the shoulder. "Sir?...Sir? Are you needing any landing card?" She asked in English. James nodded and replied in Korean. "Yes please, the Korean version is fine" Shocked by James's perfect Korean, she handed him the landing card. "Your Korean is amazing, please ring the bell if you don't understand something. The language used on the card can be difficult or vague. Even we Korean's don't understand" She replied while smiling kindly. James continued to watch the stewardess as she continued to push the cart down the aisle. He then drew his attention back onto the landing card, as he began to fill out the details in Korean. The plane continued to descend until landing on the runway, the plane jolted which startled James making him drop his pen on the floor. James apologized to the man next to him with a slight bow, as the man handed him the pen back with two hands. Blushing, James continued to finish filling out the landing card, before placing it in the front zipper compartment of his backpack. The plane taxied to the gate before the bell signal chimed and passengers began to prepare to disembark from the plane. Filled with excitement James rushed to take out his hand luggage from the overhead compartment. Pulling roughly, his luggage knocked down the man's laptop case that fell onto the floor. James stared at the man who seemed to be annoyed by what he had done. James looked at the man and apologized for the second time. The man glared at him and opened his mouth. "Please be considerate of other people next time." he said in Korean. James tilted his head slightly and once again apologized. "Stop apologizing to me. Just don't do it again" the man replied. James watched the man grab the laptop case and walk ahead of him out of the plane. As James walked out onto the bridge, he was greeted by a warm smile by the airport staff. They bowed welcoming him to South Korea. James bowed back with a smile on his face. "It's great to be back". All staff opened up their eyes in disbelief when they heard James reply back to them in Korean. They bowed once more wishing him a wonderful day. Tugging on his small had luggage, James proceeded to exit out of the gate and walk down the winding hallways that showcased pictures of various destinations in Korea on the walls. He let out a huge sigh and continued to walk down the hallway with a huge smile. He was back in the country he had wanted to live in for a long time since leaving three years ago. James stopped in the middle of the walkway to take out his phone, as he realized he needed to connect to the internet to check to see if his friend Doyoung messaged him. He opened the KAKAO TALK app, to see that there had been three missed voice calls, and one missed face talk. Geez, I just landed this girl needs to chill James thought to himself. He tapped on his screen and placed the phone to his ear. The phone continued to play the KAKAO TALK ringtone until Doyoung picked up the phone. "Hey, Oh my god have you landed yet?" She screamed in excitement. "No, I'm on my way to immigration. I just landed" James replied "Oh my god, James I'm so excited to see you. Do you know how much I've missed you!" "You saw me two months ago back in the UK. Remember? We said goodbye and you cried your eyes out?" "Oh yeah... I know..anyway, my boyfriend and I are waiting for you..so Bali Bali~" Doyoung said before hanging up the phone. James reached immigration and ended up waiting in a long line. While waiting, he thought it would be a good idea to check his emails. When scrolling through his emails, he clicked on the message that was titled 'HanYang Electronics - IMPORTANT INFORMATION'. The message read. Dear James Porter, HanYang Electronics gives you a warm welcome to South Korea. We hope you enjoy working with us and enjoy your new life here in Seoul. As required by the company, all new employees MUST attend the 'New Employee Orientation". Here we will teach you how to apply for an ARC (Alien Registration Card), and more importantly how to register for a South Korean bank account. Since you have lived in South Korea during your year abroad, I'm sure you are well informed of these procedures already. However, there maybe an issue with opening a new bank account if you had not closed it during the last time you were here. If this is the case, please go to the branch you opened the bank account with, to terminate the old account. Unfortunately, these are the rules of Korea. According to your documents, your last bank account was registered with the KBE Hana Bank in Anam, I have attached below an email and phone number you can contact them with if you are unable to go in person. Once terminated we can switch you over to the bank connected with the company. Details of the orientation are as followed Hanyang Electronics Orientation Time: Mon 12th, September 9:00 AM ~ 1:00 PM Address: Hanyang Electronics, Mapogu, Sangam Dong, Seoul (Exit 9 Digitial Media City Station) Location: Hanyang Electronics - Hwangueum Lecture Hall, Floor B1 Have a pleasant weekend. Hyewon Choi James finished reading the email just reading email, before approaching the immigration counter. James handed over his passport that contained his work visa, and place of residency in Seoul. The women scanned his passport. "Please apply for your ARC within three months. This will expire in three months okay?" She said in English. James nodded and took his passport while going through immigration. "Wow, I finally moved back to South Korea..." James muttered to himself, before heading down the escalator to claim his baggage. The automatic doors opened and James stepped out looking around for Doyoung. Doyoung shouted and waved at him while holding a huge sign that said 'Welcome back to Korea'. Doyoung screamed and run up towards James to give him a huge hug. "Long time no see," she said before releasing him from her embrace. James smiled and gave her another hug, before being introduced to her boyfriend. Doyoung's boyfriend bowed and greeted James in Korean. James bowed back. The boyfriend grabbed James's luggage and backpack, while James interlocked arms with Doyoung as they all headed to the car. James and Doyoung both got in the back seat before, she handed him a bottle of Milkis. Parched since he arrived, James grabbed the bottle and opened the cap. As if he had been wandering the desert for a hundred years, James gulped on the soda until there was no liquid left. "Damn... you must have been thirsty" Doyoung laughed. James gathered his breath. "I'm always thirsty" Doyoung slapped his arm and wheezed. "James do you have your address for the company apartment?" She asked. James nodded and handed over his phone which contained the address for his apartment. Doyoung handed the phone over to her boyfriend. He started to enter the address and drove off. James turned around as the car drove away, and the site of Incheon airport disappeared in the morning fog. He let out another sigh of relief. I never have to see that airport ever again he thought. James has always hated the feeling of returning back to Incheon International airport. Whenever he would return, the feeling of nervousness and panic would consume him. He had always hated leaving Korea to go back to the UK. He felt in his heart that he was meant to be here, that he would have a much happier life in the land of the morning calm. James smiled and rested his head on the back seat before closing his eyes and listening to his music. Doyoung saw him fall asleep and covered him in a blanket that was on the front seat. What felt like seconds, James was suddenly awoken by the car door slamming. Doyoung opened the door to let him out. "Wake up sleepy head, we've arrived at your house." She said with a huge smile. Still stuck in a state of sleepiness, James slowly peered out of the car, covering the sharp rays of the sun with his hands. "Wha..How long was I asleep for?" James asked while stretching. "umm. Like an hour and a half?" Doyoung replied. Doyoung's boyfriend came out of the main doors of the apartment and approached James. "You're very lucky to live here. This is a luxury apartment, look it even has a front desk" He said while pointing in the direction of the apartment. James looked around trying to find his luggage. "Wh-?" "We've taken all your stuff up..." Doyoung said while grabbing his phone. She opened up the notes app on his phone and started to write down two codes. "The first code gets you into the apartment when there is no one at the front desk. The second code is the code to your apartment...I memorized it. I'm so coming to your apartment tomorrow to drink" She grinned. James cackled and snorted. Doyoung grabbed his arm "Come on you let's get you to bed" Doyoung waved goodbye to her boyfriend while taking James up to his apartment. James and Doyoung both entered the lift which took them up to the 20th floor. "Door number 920" Doyoung said while entering the code. James opened the door and entered the apartment. The apartment was fully furnished while a wooden interior, with chandelier-like lighting that cascaded over the living room. "This...This is my house?" James said in disbelief "Yeah.. Better than that one room you had two years ago, am I right?" Doyoung nudged. James opened the door to his bedroom, to find a king-size bed with a white duvet and pillow casing, that had a small grey blanket sitting on the edge of the bed. He ran and jumped onto the bed, before taking the scent of fresh clean sheets. Doyoung stood by the door and smiled at him, as she watched him once again fall asleep. "Welcome back home James.." She said quietly before shutting the bedroom door and exciting out of the apartment.
