Around lunch, Evan showed up with Gavin. He came in and picked up Adalyn from the floor where we were playing.
“I’m going to jump in the shower.” I said, making my way to my room. Once cleaned and changed into new clothes, I headed out to a crying baby.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know. She was fine and kept looking toward your room. I think she just really missed you.”
I took Adalyn and placed kisses on her face. She stopped crying but didn’t seem happy. She put her head into my chest and looked back up at me.
She didn’t seem to want food and seemed to need a nap. I walked into my room to lay her down and she reached towards my dirty clothes.
“What do you want, princess?”
I picked up my shirt and grabbed it and pulled it to her like a blanket. I laid her down in her bed and watched as she held my shirt and fell asleep. I took the blanket and realized it smelled just like Eve.
I was hoping after her nap Adalyn would be my normal happy baby and she was as long as she had my shirt.
Picking up my phone, I decided to give Eve a call.
“Hello?”
“Hi Eve, how are you?”
“Much better now.”
“How are you?” She asked.
“Good, but Adalyn seems to be in a mood.”
“I’m sure it’s the new environment. I am sure she will be back to normal soon.”
Just like that, Adalyn started to fuss again. I picked her up and walked to the kitchen.
“Can I change to a FaceTime call?” I asked.
“Sure.”
Propping up my phone, I tapped to change to a FaceTime call.
“Hi Princess.” Eve said through the phone and Adalyn instantly calmed down and reached for the phone.
“I think she likes you.”
“I like her too.”
We continued to talk for about a half hour before ending the call. As soon as we ended the call, Adalyn got fussy again. I couldn’t understand why. She had always been a Daddy’s girl. Even before her mother left, she was always about me.
For some reason, I couldn’t get her in a good mood. I even gave her my shirt but Eve’s smell was fading.
Evan and Gavin came back and tried to help, but nothing we did made her happy.
“Why don’t we just go to Eve’s house?” Gavin said. “She seems like a baby whisper.”
“I can’t just show up at her house.” I said, a little frustrated.
“Then call her. We can all tell she likes you and if you asked her I bet she would come here.” Gavin said.
“Fine.”
She answers on the second ring.
“I didn’t think I would hear from you again today.” She said with a little giggle.
“What can I say? I can’t keep away.”
“How is Adalyn?”
I couldn’t help but smile when she asked right away about my baby.
“That is why I was calling. I think everything is a little much for her and she really seemed to like you and…” My nerves got the best of me and I stopped. I was a Kappi. What the hell was this feeling?
“And you want me to come over?” She said in a soft voice.
“Yes.”
“Sure. Brayden is leaving in about an hour and I have bread baking but, I can come over right after.
“Where is Brayden going?”
“He is joining a friend's family on vacation. So he will be gone till next Friday.”
“That sounds like fun.”
“He is excited. So I will see you in about an hour.”
“See you soon.” I said, ending the call.
**Everly**
I couldn’t help but be nervous and excited all at the same time. I had been wishing he would call and maybe ask me out, but it had not happened. But I found myself just being excited about seeing him.
A larger part of me realized I needed to protect my heart. He would need to go back to Colorado and I couldn’t just uproot my children after everything they had been through. But he liked me, or at least I felt like he was into me. He kissed me and you don’t kiss somebody you’re not attracted to, right?
Making sure Brayden was ready, I couldn’t help but already miss him. But I knew he was excited about this trip with his friend and his family.
Once he was out the door, I packed up the fresh bread I had just made and Kennedy and I made our way to Dustin’s hotel. Gavin was taking Kennedy on a date and he was waiting outside for us when we arrived with another gentleman I had never seen.
I watched as Gavin gently kissed Kennedy and I could see how happy he made her. Which tugged at my heart, thinking her heart might be broken when Gavin left with Dustin.
“Hey Gavin,” I said with a smile.
“Hi Eve. I’m so glad you are here.”
“And who is this?” I asked with a smile at the other young man with Gavin.
“This is Calvin. He is one of Dustins umm body guards.”
“Nice to meet you.” I said, putting out my hand.
“Nice to meet you, Queen, can I carry that bag for you?”
