Chioma’s POV
The steady beep of the patient monitor filled the room, reminding me that i was still alive.
Cold air from the air conditioner sent goosebumps across my skin. I was lying on a cold, soft bed, trying to open my eyes, but everything was blurry. I could make out the movements of two people standing nearby, but I couldn't see their faces clearly.
Then I saw something strange.
A tall figure stood in front of me. I couldn't make out his face, but there was a bright light glowing from the center of his forehead, almost like a third eye.
He reached out and gently touched my head.
"Easy," he said, his voice strangely calm, like he was speaking to a child.
His hand moved to my stomach. For some reason, the touch felt soothing.
Then his hands disappeared.
"Take this," he said. "It's good for you."
I swallowed.
Almost immediately, my skin started itching all over. I looked down and noticed I was wearing a strange white overall. There was a bitter taste in my mouth, and my fingers trembled slightly.
Then a thin voice spoke.
"How is she?"
The voice sounded familiar– Roberta..I guess.
"Well, due to the rusted wire coat hangers used, we found some foreign particles during the examination. or should I say iron particles. We've removed them successfully."
My mind went blank.
“huh, say what now? Particles of what? My thoughts raced as panic set in
I wanted to speak, but my body felt too weak.
"Should she be sent home now?"
"No, not yet. Just to be certain, we'll keep her here for a few days. She's also lost a significant amount of blood. If you want her kept under observation, she can stay."
"No, that's fine. Do as you please. Whenever she's alright and ready for discharge, I'll come get her."
“What the f**k is going on?”
“Am I dying?”
I couldn't understand why I couldn't speak. Maybe I was too weak. Or maybe I was simply too embarrassed because a man had been all up in my v****a and was talking about particles and s**t” too stunned to process everything that had happened.
Footsteps approached.
I felt hands slide under my overalls. Two fingers found my v****a, reached for my c******s and yanked. A shock wave ran through my body.
My eyes flew open.
I sucked in a deep breath and immediately looked around.
A man in a white robe stood in front of me, staring directly into my eyes.
"Shhh," he whispered.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Umm... what?"
I sighed in disbelief.
Suddenly, a sharp vibration shot through my head.
"My head..." I whispered.
"Your head? Yes, but your name. Address?"
"The f**k are you asking me an address for? Are you nuts?" I groaned. "My head... that burning eye..."
"Eye?"
"Inside," I muttered.
"Shoot her up for X-ray," another voice said.
"My head..."
"Careful!" I cried as they lifted me from the bed and moved me onto another one.
Somewhere a machine began to hum. I distrusted the man and the woman above me. They held me firm. It was fiery.– Then I heard I, three short buzzes and one long one, repeated over and over at varying volumes. I struggled, broke through, and found myself on my back with two pink-faced men laughing down at me.
My breathing became faster.
"Be quiet now," one of them said firmly. "You'll be alright."
"Help!"
I screamed as loudly as I could.
The door suddenly slammed open.
"What's wrong?"
I turned my head. It was Vinco.
"Help me!" I cried, tears immediately filling my eyes.
"That's enough! Leave her alone!"
His deep voice echoed across the room.
He walked toward me, lifted me from the cot, and placed me carefully back on the bed.
He stared at me for a moment before gently patting my head.
"Are you alright?" he asked. "Say something."
I was too stunned to answer.
Then I saw one of the medical staff on pink bonnet smiling at me.
"No!" I yelled.
"I'm not okay!"
The tears came harder.
"They gave me some pills... and touched me down there and... and..."
I couldn't finish.
Vinco suddenly turned on them.
"What the f**k do you think you're doing? Aren't you supposed to be doctors?"
"Sir, she complained about severe head pain, so we were preparing her for an X-ray, but–"
"Preparing her for an X-ray and having her screaming for help?" Vinco snapped. "I said treat her, not traumatize her!"
"Get out!"
"But, sir–"
"I said…get out!"
His voice thundered through the room.
They all quickly left and shut the door behind them.
"Where does it hurt? Here or here?"
He placed one hand gently against my head and the other near my stomach.
"I'm fine now... I guess."
I moved his hand away from my head, sat up properly, and sighed.
There was a long tube connected to the back of my hand, with liquid slowly running through it.
"What's this?"
"For blood."
"Oh. Right."
"Don't tell me you actually became stupid after what happened," Vinco said with a smirk. "Does your head still hurt?"
"Shut up."
I rolled my eyes.
"You hungry? Need anything?"
"I don't know."
I sighed.
A knock came at the door.
"Who's that?" Vinco asked.
"It's Roberta, sir."
"Alright, come in."
The door opened, and Roberta walked in carrying a medium-sized bag in one hand and a food container in the other.
Another woman followed behind her.
She was wearing the same caregiver uniform I usually wore at the Antonov mansion.
"Who's this?" I asked.
"She'll be your replacement for the time being," Roberta said, placing the bag on the desk. "You're not fit to continue your duties right now."
"How are you feeling now? Better?"
"I don't know. I mean, what's a person who's got iron particles in her p***y supposed to feel, huh?”
The words came out harsher than I intended.
Maybe I was angry because I was being replaced.
Maybe it was because of everything that had happened.
Or maybe I was simply tired of everything.
"It's alright. You don't have to get worked up about it," Roberta said.
"Wait..."
Vinco looked at her.
"What's this about iron particles in a p***y?" Vinco looked surprised
"Well, sir, let's discuss that somewhere else."
"Alright."
He looked at me.
"You need to rest."
Then, without warning, he leaned down and kissed the top of my head.
I froze.
He walked out with Roberta.
“Why the f**k did he just do that?”
And why was he suddenly acting so nice?
I stared at the door after they left.
The new girl stood beside the patient monitor, staring at the screen.
"What's your deal?" I asked irritably.
"Huh?"
"Why the f**k are you staring at my heart rate? Or do you plan on turning it off so I can die and you can happily replace me?"
She scoffed.
"b***h, please."
I stared at her.
"What did you just say?"
"I'm Sybil. Nice to meet you too."
She smiled.
"Didn't ask."
I looked at her suspiciously.
"How are you here anyway?"
"Didn't you hear? Or did this whole thing affect your hearing too?" she asked, walking toward the window. "I'm your substitute. Well, for now."
"Yeah, I know."
I narrowed my eyes.
"I mean, how did you get here? Were you... you know... kidnapped?"
Sybil turned around.
"What's this? An interrogation?"
She folded her arms.
"I'm a plant."
I frowned.
"Plant? Elaborate."
She hesitated.
"Not supposed to be saying this, but I feel like I can trust you."
She lowered her voice.
"So, umm... yeah. I'm being trafficked."
My eyes widened.
"What?"
"Trafficked."
"Yeah..you heard me."
"How? Is it Vinco?" I asked. "Definitely sounds like something he'd do."
"Hey, look. Don't say that."
Sybil glanced toward the door.
"You never heard this from me. This conversation never happened."
"Okay, now I'm freaked out."
I stared at her.
"What's actually going on?"
"We'll talk about it some other time."
She shrugged.
"Your boyfriend said you need to rest."
"He's not my boyfriend."
I glared at her.
"Don't ever say that again."
Sybil burst out laughing.
She walked over to the table, picked up the food container, and returned to my bedside. She opened it and stared at what was inside.
"What's that? An eyeball?"
"No," Sybil said, laughing. "It's porridge."
"Eww."
I made a face.
"You can have it if you want."
Sybil grabbed a spoon and was about to take a bite when–
**BANG!**
The door flew open.
It was Vinco.
"We have to leave."
His expression was serious.
"Now!"
