PhilipIt wasn’t long after Louise had met Lucas that she had caught pneumonia. It happened quickly and aggressively. Within days, Louise couldn’t keep any food down. Drinking water had also become difficult.
“I’m afraid her immune system is compromised,” the doctor told Philip.
“But I thought she just had the flu or...” Philip’s head was spinning. He put his hands on the end rail of the bed and stood over Louise’s weak body. She was a shell of the woman he’d once known.
“Aspiration pneumonia is quite common with people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”
“What now?” Philip asked. “What do we do now? Is there some medicine we can give her? Surely you can treat this. It’s pneumonia—everyone gets pneumonia!”
“At this stage, she needs plenty of bed rest—”
