July LouiseLouise sat on the porch armchair that felt a little too big for her. She slid against the side so that she hugged the left arm. There was a lot of activity going on around her. It was busy with people—different people. They were kind to her, but Louise felt immensely pressured by their presence. The people ate. They drank. They laughed—sometimes with her; other times amongst themselves. But that day, the children were there. Them—she knew them. Liam, Noah, Zoe, Adam, and Lulu. They played around her and their laughter sounded like music that calmed her. “Granny Lou,” Noah said as he ran up to her. “Yes?” Louise smiled as the boy put his small hand on her knee. “I have a joke for you.” “Ooh, do you?” He always had jokes for her, and Louise enjoyed him sharing them with her.
