Aurora felt the weight of Xander's words settle over her like a thick fog. Who else is looking for the amulet? How's that her business? She's got a lot on her hands... shuffling between her personal life and her company, then this!! Hell no! The question had no easy answer, but she had an unsettling feeling that whatever she was about to uncover would lead to dangers she wasn’t prepared for and she's not ready to dive into a world of chaos. Not in her weirdest imagination!.
Xander gaze was fixed on her, intense and calculating, as though he was waiting for her to say something. She clenched her fists, unwilling to let her fear show.
“Who else, Xander?” she asked, trying to sound more confident than she felt. “What’s going on here? I'm lost. What's sort of turn is this and no way in hells name will I get myself involved in whatever mystery you are into! Never!
He took a slow step toward her, his expression unreadable. The room seemed to close in around them, the shadows stretching long and dark along the walls. “You have no idea what you’ve walked into, Aurora Blackwood,” he said softly, his voice laced with an emotion she couldn’t quite decipher. “There are forces at play that have been moving long before we even knew they existed. And now that you’ve found your way here…” He paused, a flicker of something—maybe regret?—flashing across his face.
“You think I’m just a pawn in this game,” Aurora shot back, frustration bubbling inside her. “I didn’t choose this, Blackwood. I’ve been chasing this amulet for years because of my parents. I’m not just some player in your world of secrets and mysteries.”
His eyes softened for a brief moment, but the mask quickly returned. “No one ever chooses this life, Aurora ,” he said quietly. “But you’ve already chosen your path, whether you know it or not. You’ve uncovered something dangerous, and now you’re tied to it. To me.”
The words hit her harder than she anticipated. Tied to him? Did he really expect her to believe that? She had come here in pursuit of the truth, not to get tangled in whatever dark web he was a part of. This must be the joke of the century. She laughed.
“Why are you showing me all this, Xander?” composing herself, she asked again, her voice wavering slightly despite her best efforts to sound strong. “Why the key? Why me? Why not someone else?"
He stepped closer, so close that she could feel the heat of his presence dominating her? What's with his dominating aura??. “Because, Aurora ,” he said, his voice almost a whisper one after the other, “you, you have the answers. The amulet… it’s part of something much bigger than any of us. And it’s not just a relic to be locked away. It’s a key to a hidden power, and you’re the only one who can unlock it.”
Her breath caught in her throat. “I don’t understand,” Me? Answers? she whispered.
“You will,” he replied. “But not yet.”
Before Aurora could respond, a loud crash echoed through the chamber, followed by the unshakeable sound of footsteps. She turned to see xander's expression shift from calm to cold, his eyes narrowing as he instinctively moved closer to her.
“Stay behind me,” he commanded, his voice low and cold.
Aurora ’s pulse spiked. She had no idea what was happening, but the tension in the air was suffocating not to talk of the room temperature dropping. She obeyed, not that she can argue with the Xander she's seeing now, stepping back as Xander pulled something from beneath his jacket—a small, sleek handgun. It wasn’t the weapon that frightened her, though. It was the cold, determined look in his eyes. He wasn’t just expecting trouble; he was prepared for it.
“What’s going on?” Aurora demanded, her voice trembling despite her attempts to remain composed.
“Just do as commanded,” he whispered unfazed.
The footsteps grew louder, echoing through the stone hall. The air seemed to crackle with anticipation, and Aurora ’s instincts screamed at her to run. But she stayed rooted to the spot, too curious, too afraid to leave.
Xander's eyes flicked toward the far corner of the room, and in one fluid motion, he disappeared into the shadows with Aurora pressed against strong chest, her heart hammering in her chest, as a door creaked open at the far end of the chamber.
A figure stepped into view, cloaked in darkness.
Aurora could barely make out the figure, but the sense of danger was too alarming. Whoever this was, they weren’t here to make small talk.
She strained to hear their footsteps, but there was no sound. Just the quiet thud of her own heartbeat as she waited, every muscle in her body tense.
The figure stepped further into the room, and Aurora felt her breath catch in her throat when the person finally emerged into the faint light.
A woman. Tall, with dark, unkempt hair. Her face was partially covered by a hood, but her eyes, they seem cold, calculating, locked onto hers with unnerving precision.
This wasn’t just a random intruder.
“Kade,” the woman’s voice echoed through the chamber, low and guttural. “You can’t keep hiding forever.”
Aurora ’s stomach dropped. The voice was familiar. Too familiar.
Xander stepped forward from the shadows with Aurora in tow, his eyes meeting the intruder’s. “You shouldn’t have come here, Victoria,” he said, his voice dangerously calm.
Victoria? Aurora ’s mind raced. She’d heard that name before. Victoria Kane, Xander's right-hand man. The one who always seemed to appear at his side, but never said much.
Xander and woman stood in tense silence, the weight of their unspoken history hanging in the air like a thick fog.
Victoria’s lips twisted into a smile, but it was anything but reassuring. “I don’t need your permission, Kade. I’m here for the same thing you are.”
Xander's grip tightened on his gun, his jaw clenched. “Then you should know by now—this is mine".
The room seemed to pulse with the energy between them. Aurora was frozen in place, caught between two powerful forces, neither of which she fully understood. She wanted to move, to speak, but her legs wouldn’t obey.
Victoria’s gaze shifted toward Aurora , and a slow, knowing smile spread across his face.
“Well, well,” she said softly, her voice dripping with menace. “Looks like we have a guest.”
Aurora’s heart skipped a beat. She was caught, trapped between them, and the nightmare she’d stumbled into was only beginning to unfold.
She was no longer just chasing an amulet. She was at the center of a game she hadn’t even begun to understand. And as Victoria’s eyes never left hers, she realized just how deep she had already fallen.
