Chapter eight

864 Words
Summer I was led into the mansion by the butler. The moment I stepped inside, painful memories from my past life came rushing back. My chest tightened as I glanced at the exact spot where I had fallen and broken my neck. The floor was spotless, it sparkled under the lights as though nothing had ever happened there. As though I had never died there. I looked around the mansion. Everything was exactly the same as I remembered. The maids moved around busily carrying out their duties. Staff members went about their work as if it were just another ordinary day. There was no sign that this family had lost someone important, no sadness or grief. My heart squeezed painfully, my death had meant absolutely nothing to them, my entire life had been wasted for nothing. A few minutes later, Ethan walked down the stairs majestically. Behind him was Fiona, following closely in quick steps. I watched them descend the staircase. The sight of them together made my stomach churn, Ethan finally reached the bottom of the stairs and walked toward me. "Welcome," he said. A deep frown sat on Fiona's face, making it obvious that I was anything but welcome in her eyes. "Mom," Ethan said. "Meet Elena, the lady I told you I hit with my car." Fiona took a few steps toward me. It was obvious she expected me to be intimidated by her presence. I stood my ground and lifted my chin, she didn't intimidate me. The only thing her presence did was fill my heart with pain and hatred. "Okay, but why is she here?" Fiona asked, glaring at me. Ethan cleared his throat. "She has amnesia, and I am the only person she trusts enough to live with," he said, looking directly into my eyes. I could feel the anger hidden behind his gaze, but I didn't care. "She will be staying here for a while until she regains her memory," he added. Fiona let out a sarcastic laugh. "Tell me it's a joke," she said. "You hit a stray and bring her into the palace because she has amnesia? What happened to getting her an apartment or paying people to take care of her? Are you now so dumb that you can't see that this is a leech and an opportunist right here?" She pointed directly at me, I remained silent, but my hands clenched into fists. Ethan growled loudly at the insult. "Whatever I decide to do with the palace is up to me alone. You have no right to question my authority, Mom," he said angrily. For a moment, the room fell silent. Fiona stared at him in disbelief. "How do you think this will make Tamara feel?" she yelled. Before Ethan could respond, the front door opened, Tamara walked inside. She immediately stopped in her tracks when she sensed the tension in the air. Her eyes moved from Fiona to Ethan before finally landing on me. The moment our gazes met, time seemed to stand still, we stared at each other for several seconds. The woman who had taken everything from me, the woman I suspected had a hand in my death. A slow smirk formed on my lips, her expression immediately darkened. "Who is she?" she asked, pointing at me. "The stray your fiancé brought home," Fiona answered quickly. "And now she is going to live under the same roof as us." Tamara's eyes widened. "That's impossible!" she yelled. The shock on her face quickly turned into anger. "She can't stay here." Without hesitation, she rushed toward Ethan and grabbed his arm. "You can't bring another woman into this palace," she said. "I tolerated your bunch of low-life breeders. Now I have to tolerate this too?" Her voice echoed through the mansion as the servants nearby quietly lowered their heads and pretended not to listen. I stood there silently, watching her lose control. For the first time today, I felt a small sense of satisfaction. My presence alone was already making their perfect little world uncomfortable. "It's just for a short period of time until she regains her memory," Ethan said. "What if she is only pretending to have lost her memory just to get close to you?" Tamara asked. "She looks very healthy. Why not just buy her a house and pay her off?" she said, looking at me as though I was some kind of gold digger. Ethan ignored her completely. Instead, he called over one of the maids who was passing by. "Please take her to one of the guest rooms and make sure she is comfortable," he said. The maid immediately hurried over and reached for my luggage. A smile tugged at my lips. "Oh, I won't be staying in the guest room since it seems I'm not welcomed here," I said, blinking innocently. The entire room went silent, i could feel everyone's eyes on me. Then I turned to the maid. "Take my luggage to the king's room." The maid looked horrified, as if she wasn't sure she had heard me correctly. "What?!" Fiona and Tamara screamed at the same time. The shock on their faces was priceless.
