[ Rain ] I watched in complete and utter silence as Adam signed out the words: I had a great time tonight. He was smiling proudly, and I forced myself to smile back and nod. Obviously, he had been practicing. Although this was our first dinner together, this was the fifth date. The others had all been lunch dates, the first being at the café and the second had been at some fancy restaurant in the next town. Adam had quickly realized that I wasn’t into the flashy scene and so the other two dates had been at diners in town. “Can I come up?” he suddenly asked, breaking through my thoughts, and my whole body tensed up at the question. Clearly, Adam thought that all the dates had gone well. I was grateful that he picked up on my hesitation when he shrugged and looked away a bit sheepishly.
