1~Everything goes wrong
“We can't help if you didn't follow basic instructions ma'am” My patience was running thin.
“How dare you. I want to speak to your supervisor!” The rude woman yelled over the phone, causing me to wince.
After years of working as a customer care consultant at a logistics company, I still struggled with being patient.
I was busy trying to salvage the situation when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned around and a knot of dread instantly formed in my stomach as I saw my supervisor. The man seemed to have a sixth sense for when I was teaching the callers some basic manners.
“I'm sorry ma'am. We'll see what we can do” I said and ended the call before she could blow out my eardrums.
“I'd like to see you in my office, Lydia”
Oh boy.
I eased myself out of my station and followed Mr Humphrey to his office.
“Yes, sir”
“Third strike Owen” He raised three fingers up at me with an exasperated look.
“I know, sir but I can do better. I promise, I'll do better”
“I've given you multiple second chances over the years. You just have to accept you're not suited to this kind of job”
I stood with my arms hanging by my sides, the reality of the situation slowly dawning on me.
Mr Humprehy let out a sigh. “I know some of the callers can be… difficult so I'll give you a good remark so you can find a good job and you'll get your pay for the month but that's the best I can do”
I didn't know whether to thank him or try to plead my case.
“I understand. Thank you, sir” I walked out of his office and returned to my desk. I pretended not to notice all the looks I was getting as I picked up my stuff and shut down my laptop. I wasn't exactly friends with any of them.
I managed to keep my head high till I left the company grounds. Then my calm exterior faded.
I'd just lost my job.
How was I going to survive?
My boyfriend and I were already considering marriage. How would we afford the wedding if one of us didn't have a job?
“Oh this is bad” I muttered to myself as I hailed a cab.
I just needed to return home to Liam, I knew he'd make me feel better, tell me we'd figure things out.
Liam was my boyfriend and we'd already been living together for a year. Everything with him was perfect. He was probably my biggest win in life at the time.
The thought of returning home to him early somehow helped me forget the real problem, that I was now jobless. I got out of the cab when I reached the apartment. I jabbed my key in the hole and walked in, closing the door behind me with a soft thud.
I threw my bag on the couch and pulled off my sneakers, resting on the couch for a bit before I went upstairs. I could hear some muffled sounds coming from the bedroom. I was half expecting Liam to be on the phone or playing a game or something. Instead, what I saw was worse.
He wasn't alone.
Liam was on our bed with a petite redhead. She was completely naked and riding him to cloud nine. His hands were firmly around her waist.
I think my heart stopped for a second as I stood in the doorway, staring at my boyfriend of five years with another woman.
“Oh my God” I gasped.
My voice finally alerted them to my presence. Liam looked panicked and almost pushed the girl off of him as he scrambled to put on his clothes. I stormed out of the room, moving hurriedly down the stairs as I fought to control my ragged breaths.
Liam was close on my heel and he managed to grab my hand. I pulled it out of his grip immediately.
“Honey, y-you're home early today”
“Oh save me the crap. Liam, how could you?” My voice was coated in a mix of raw anger and pain.
“Listen baby you weren't supposed to see that”
“And is that supposed to make me feel any better? Because you had the decency to hide your cheating behavior from me? How long has this been going on?”
“Baby, baby listen…”
“No. Get off me. I just had the worst day at work and I was coming home thinking I'd be able to derive some comfort from my boyfriend but he was busy f*****g some other woman!”
I turned around pulling my shoes back on and packing what little of my things I had in the living room. I wasn't thinking clearly. I just knew I needed to leave.
“Just calm down, at least let me explain” I saw the redhead peeking from upstairs. She had a mocking smile on her face, from the distance I noticed her extended canines. She was a werewolf.
Somehow, that made me feel worse.
I saw red.
I looked between Liam and his little feline w***e. I wanted to drag her by her hair but I knew that was a fight I'd lose terribly and in the end, Liam was the only one who owed me any loyalty. I balled my hand into fists, my brain struggling to process the storm which was my emotions.
I walked out of the apartment slamming the door behind me. My chest felt heavy and my head was spinning but I refused to cry. Too much had happened to me and I couldn't afford to break down.
I didn't have much on me but I had just enough to rent a hotel for a few nights, I found an affordable place and got a room. I didn't have friends or family. I was essentially alone. Liam's betrayal hurt me to my core because he was all I had and the last person I'd expect that kind of pain from.
The hotel room was decent at best and I'd noticed it was built right next to one of the hottest clubs in the city. A den of sin for both werewolves and humans alike. It would probably be difficult sleeping at night, but I wasn't looking for comfort.
I took a few sedatives out of my bag. I struggled to sleep and that afternoon I wanted nothing more than to not be awake for a few hours. After some minutes of staring at the plain ceiling with white paint coming off, the pills kicked in and I slowly fell to a deep slumber.
♡♡♡♡
I don't know who's dumb idea it was to build a hotel next to a club. Perhaps I could find the person and pour out my frustrations on them. I'd woken up around 10pm and just like I'd predicted, I wouldn't be getting much sleep at night.
I got up and looked out my window. It had a pretty decent view of the street and it was packed—Teenagers with fake IDs in skimpy dresses, creeps, and pedophiles waiting to swoop in, cheating men looking for thrill, and the ones that were there to sell drugs.
I returned to my bed running my hands through my hair. You know what? f**k it.
I got out of bed, freshened up and let my hair down. I went out, still in my work clothes, a fitted mid-thigh length skirt and a white shirt. It wasn't exactly club material but I was sure some would find it sexy.
I couldn't think of a better way to let loose and forget my troubles. The line to get into the club was long but once I got in, I went straight to the bar for a drink. I was on my third glass when I noticed someone staring at me from across the room.
I pretended not to look and after a while, he came up to me.
“Hello, beautiful”
I looked up at him and there was something electric about him. Maybe it was the way he looked at me, and his powerful aura. Or perhaps it was how breathtakingly gorgeous he was and how I could feel the wetness pooling in my panties just from staring at him.
I knew he wasn't human.
