Chapter 1
The silver-framed mirror in the basement of the St. Jude’s Elite Academy dormitories didn't lie, but it certainly knew how to keep a secret. Evangeline leaned close to the glass, her fingers steady despite the chill humming through the stone walls. She dipped a coarse sponge into a jar of thick, muddy paste—a custom blend of charcoal, sulfur-infused cream, and a trace of damp clay. With practiced, deliberate strokes, she smeared it across her cheekbones. Piece by piece, she watched her true self vanish. The luminous, ethereal glow of her skin was replaced by a dull, mottled gray-brown complexion. With a fine brush, she drew asymmetrical shadows along her jawline, blunting its sharp, aristocratic perfection. Finally, she painted faux-blemishes and angry red patches over a skin tone that, just moments prior, looked as though it had been sculpted from flawless marble. Next came the hair. She pulled a matted, coarse mud-brown wig over her head, pinning it down with ruthless efficiency. She checked the edges twice, ensuring not a single strand of her true hair—spun gold that literally caught the ambient light—could escape. *Perfect,* she thought, letting out a long, silent breath that fogged the glass. *Ugly. Unremarkable. Safe.* At St. Jude’s, an elite training ground for the continent’s most powerful wolf shifters and magical lineages, status and bloodlines were everything. The academy was a meat market of raw power and political alliances. If the faculty or the high-ranking Alphas ever discovered what she actually was—a pureblooded high-fae hybrid with a face that could drive an entire pack to madness—she would instantly cease to be a student. She would become a prize to be hunted, claimed, and locked in a gilded cage. Worse, if they knew she could speak, they would demand her name. They would trace her lineage, look into her past, and inevitably uncover the truth about the night her birth pack was brutally slaughtered. So, Evangeline chose silence. She chose to play the role of the "mute stray" the academy took in on a rare, begrudging act of charity. It was a miserable existence, but misery was a cheap price to pay for survival. She grabbed her frayed canvas bag, threw it over her shoulder, and pushed open the heavy wooden door leading out into the central courtyard. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine, crushed dew, and the distant, metallic tang of the training rings. Students in pristine, gold-embroidered uniforms hurried across the cobblestones, laughing and flaunting their shifting abilities. "Look at it," a mocking voice sneered from the left. "The gargoyle is out early today." Evangeline didn't need to look up to know who it was. Tanya, a high-ranking beta wolf from a prominent northern pack, blocked the path. Tanya was flanked by her usual sycophants—two lower-tier omegas who eagerly parroted her cruelty to win her favor. "Tell me, Evangeline," Tanya said, stepping directly into her trajectory, her arms crossed over her chest. "Do you ever actually wash that face, or does the dirt just grow on you naturally?" Evangeline kept her eyes glued firmly to the cobblestones. She tightened her grip on her canvas bag, deliberately pulling her shoulders inward to make herself look smaller, weaker, and entirely unthreatening. She offered a timid, submissive bow of her head and tried to shuffle past the trio. Tanya stepped to the side, completely cutting off her exit. "Don't ignore me, freak." With a sudden, vicious flick of her wrist, Tanya shoved Evangeline’s shoulder. The force was intentionally magnified by a burst of beta wolf strength. Evangeline allowed herself to fall, hitting the ground with a soft thud. Her canvas bag spilled open, sending her worn textbooks and notes scattering across the damp grass. "Oh, look, it knocked its books over," one of Tanya's lackeys giggled. Tanya looked down at Evangeline, her lip curling in disgust. "You don't belong here. You're a blight on this academy. You can't even whimper when you're pushed, can you? Completely useless." The surrounding students who had paused to watch began to laugh—a harsh, barking sound that echoed uncomfortably against the stone walls of the courtyard. Evangeline stared at the dirt, her fingers sinking into the soil as she gathered her papers. Deep inside her chest, a fiery, ancient retort rose in her throat, begging to be let out. She could dismantle Tanya’s pride with a single sentence; she could dismantle her physically in a matter of seconds. But she swallowed the anger down, forcing it deep into the dark corners of her mind. Let them laugh. Let them think she was a pathetic, broken thing. The shadows were a comfortable place to hide, and she intended to stay in them until she was strong enough to run away forever.
