Neil had just put a sleeping Michael to bed. He was carrying the baby monitor so he could listen in from downstairs. Diana was standing in the doorway to the large children’s bedroom where Danny and Christopher were bunked in with Katy and Trevor. Her hand was on the doorframe, and she was just standing there, watching them.
“Are they asleep?” he asked, and she jumped, so lost in thought she hadn’t seen or heard Neil come up.
“Danny is even though he argued he wasn’t tired.” She smiled a forced smile that didn’t reach her eyes. No, when Diana smiled, she lit up the room. But there was always a lingering sadness he would catch in the shadow of her eyes. Sometimes, she was lost in thought, unaware anyone was watching her.
