Chapter 1: The Rejection
The moonlight was blinding as it poured through the skylights of the Crescent Pack hall, but nothing burned hotter than the cold fury in Alpha Lucian’s dark eyes.
I stood in the center of the ring, surrounded by hundreds of pack members whose whispers hissed like serpents. Today was my eighteenth birthday. The day I was supposed to shift, claim my rank, and mate the man I had loved since childhood.
Instead, Lucian stepped forward, his powerful Alpha command pressing down on my chest until it was hard to breathe. He looked at me not with love, but with pure disgust.
"Ayla Vance," his voice echoed across the crowded room, cold and absolute. "Look at you. Eighteen, and still no wolf. You are weak, pack less, and a disgrace to the Crescent lineage."
"Lucian, please..." I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to stay strong. "We're fated. You know the bond is there."
"I don't care about a bond with a defective omega," Lucian snapped, grabbing my jaw in a vice grip. His eyes flashed crimson. "I, Alpha Lucian of the Crescent Pack, hereby reject you, Ayla Vance, as my mate and future Luna."
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd, followed by cruel sneers from the high-ranking wolves. Beside him, VIP guests from neighboring packs lowered their eyes, but none dared to object.
The pain hit me instantly—a searing tearing in my soul as the mate bond fractured. Blood trickled from my lip, but I refused to let a single tear fall in front of them.
"I accept your rejection, Alpha," I rasped out, holding his gaze until he flinched.
Turning my back on the only home I had ever known, I walked out onto the freezing winter's night. I had nothing left—no family, no wolf, and no pack.
What Alpha Lucian didn't know was that as I crossed the pack space boundary, a strange, electric golden light surged through my veins, awakening a power dormant for centuries. And hidden deep within me, two tiny hearts began to beat.
