CHAPTER EIGHT Sadie followed her father through the pine woods, pulling her too large parka tightly around herself against the bitter wind. It howled loudly in her ears, and she wondered if there were wolves out there, hiding up in the mountains. Only it wasn’t a wolf they were tracking, but a bear. This time, Jessica wasn’t with them. Sadie was vaguely aware that this was unusual, because Jessica was always with her, especially when their father was around, shielding Sadie from his explosive and often unexpected anger.
