CHAPTER TWELVE Sadie was moving up the gorge toward Carson’s ramshackle trapper’s cabin when she became aware of the bear. It was to the left and slightly behind her, and she sensed its eyes on her before she saw it. She stood still, trying to calm her breathing and reminding herself that most bears didn’t come near humans. That as long as it didn’t perceive her as a threat then she would be fine. But it was far from easy trying to convince herself of that when she had just witnessed two women who had been torn apart. What if this was that same bear? It didn’t look particularly savage; its stride was long and loping and it sniffed the air as it moved, seemingly not too concerned by Sadie’s presence.
