Serena’s countdown had begun—three days until her 18th birthday, and with it, her long-awaited freedom. The Sloan mansion, with its oppressive walls and suffocating atmosphere, would finally be a memory she could leave behind. She clung to that hope, a small light in the darkness that surrounded her daily. She stood in her tiny room, staring at the wall covered in peeling paint, wondering how she’d endured so much for so long. Each day felt like a war she barely survived, and she was exhausted—worn down by the whispers, the stares, and the relentless reminders of her status as a wolfless Omega and a cursed hybrid. Her stepbrothers, the Sloan triplets—Hart, Gary, and Jack—were the source of her torment. They seemed to take joy in her suffering, constantly reminding her that she was nothing more than a slave in their household. In the distance, she could hear the faint sounds of party preparations from the neighborhood. Her best friend, Mia, who lived just a block away, was celebrating her birthday, and Serena was determined to attend. A few stolen hours of happiness away from this place could mean everything to her. The buzz of her phone pulled her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen, her stomach churning at the sight of Hart’s name. Taking a deep breath, she answered. “Serena,” Hart’s voice was cold and condescending. “There’s a pile of dirty clothes waiting for you. Get to it.” “I’ll handle it after the party,” she replied, her tone as steady as she could manage. There was a sharp pause before Hart laughed, the sound dripping with mockery. “After the party? Do you think you have a choice? You’re nothing but a worthless slave. You should be grateful we took you in, considering you killed your mother with your freak powers.” The words hit her like a blow, as they always did. Serena gripped the edge of her bed, anger and pain swirling inside her. “Please, Hart,” she said softly. “Just let me go to the party.” His tone turned sharp, dangerous. “You’re not going anywhere. Get your ass over here now.” She clenched her fists, the phone trembling in her hand. “I’ll do it when I get back,” she said, her voice firm despite the fear rising in her chest. There was a heavy silence on the line before Hart spoke again, his voice low and menacing. “I won’t repeat myself.” The call ended abruptly, leaving Serena staring at the screen in frustration. She took a deep breath, grabbed her jacket, and headed for his room. As she walked down the hallway, the mansion’s walls seemed to close in around her. Family portraits lined the walls, each one a reminder of the happiness she’d never had. The sounds of laughter from Mia’s party outside made her chest ache. When she reached Hart’s room, she pushed the door open slightly. Inside, Jack and Gary were sprawled on the bed, engrossed in a video game. “I’m here,” Serena said, stepping into the room. Hart turned, a smirk tugging at his lips. “Took you long enough,” he said, gesturing toward a pile of clothes on the floor. “Get to work.” Serena hesitated, her anger bubbling to the surface. “I told you I’d do it after the party,” she said, her voice trembling but resolute. “I’m not your maid.” Jack chuckled without looking away from the screen. “Well, someone’s feeling brave today.” Hart’s smirk vanished, replaced by a glare. He stepped closer, his presence towering over her. “You think you can talk back to me? You think you have any power here?” “I’m not afraid of you,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. Hart sneered. “You should be. You’re nothing but a freak. And everyone knows it.” Something inside Serena snapped. “I’m not a freak! And I’m not like you!” she shouted, her voice echoing in the room. Hart’s eyes narrowed, and before she could react, he shoved her hard. She stumbled backward, landing on the pile of clothes. “Get up,” he growled. Tears blurred her vision as she pushed herself up. “You can’t keep doing this to me,” she said, her voice cracking. Hart laughed coldly, shaking his head. “I can and I will. You’re mine to control, Serena. You’re nothing without me.” Serena clenched her fists, her anger simmering. “You’re wrong,” she said, her voice steadier now. “I won’t be your slave forever. One day, I’ll leave this place.” Hart’s laughter sent a chill down her spine. “Good luck with that, darling stepsister. You’ll never escape me.” “I will,” she muttered, her resolve hardening. Gathering the clothes, she left the room, her heart pounding. As she washed them, her thoughts churned. She was done being afraid. Done being trapped. In three days, she would be free. “Three days,” she whispered to herself. “Just three more days.”
