Chapter 1
Jennifer stood right in front of her dad, tears rolling down her cheeks as she yelled at him.
“You can't just marry me off like that, I'm not some kind of property to be traded or sold!! I have feelings and dreams of my own. I will not let you throw them in the trash.
Mr. Hank stood there, his face impassive, as he listened to her bitter outburst. With the look in his eyes, he wasn't at all budging.
“Jennifer, you know how crucial this marriage is for our family. Your mom and I have already talked and agreed to it and the wedding has already been set in stone.
“I do not care! I will not agree to this, and I will not marry someone I do not love just because it is convenient for you, “she screamed, her voice breaking.
Mr. Hank sighed heavily. “You're just a selfish human being, Jennifer. This is not just about you, it is about the entire family and the future we all have ahead of us. “You have to understand”.
Jennifer was beyond reasoning. She had never been a dutiful daughter, but she was drawing the line now. She couldn't sacrifice her happiness, sanity, and life for the sake of family duty.
“I will not do it; God forbid that I be part of this arranged marriage, “she yelled, sobbing”.
Mr. Hank looked at her, his eyes sad but resolute. I'm truly sorry Jennifer, but this is the only way it can be. There is no other way. “And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving her standing there, alone and heartbroken.
Jennifer sat on her room chair with tears rolling down her cheeks. Her father was selling her off to save their family from going bankrupt and there was nothing she could do about it.
She was meant to be with her lover, David, tonight, to begin a new life together away from the expectations and control of both their families. Now, those arrangements have been shattered.
She felt so betrayed and hated, not just by her dad but also by her boyfriend. She had told him previously about the arranged marriage and he had promised to assist her in escaping. Now, he was nowhere to be found.
She tried to call him, but it was not going through. Her heart began to pace faster as she got scared that he was going to abandon her.
The thought of being married to someone she didn't love and barely even knew was unbearable.
She had always dreamt of finding “the one”, of being with someone who loved her for who she was. Now, those dreams were gone and she was forced into a life she never wanted.
She cried until no more tears remained and she sat on the chair in her room, feeling very broken and exhausted. She then heard a soft knock on her door.
“Jennifer darling, are you all right?” It was her mother, her voice was filled with so much concern.
She wiped her eyes and sat up trying to compose herself. “I'm fine Mom” she replied.
Mrs. Hank came forward and sat beside her on the chair, putting her hand around her shoulders and drawing her in.
“I understand that this is hard, sweetheart, it's also hard on us, but your dad and I are doing what we both think is best for our family”.
Jennifer nodded, knowing that she was right.
“I just wish things could return to the way they were”, tears filling up her eyes again.
Mrs. Hank hugged her tight “I know sweetheart, but sometimes, we can't determine or choose what life brings our way and this is one of those times.
Jennifer took in a deep breath and exhaled as she tried to force out a smile.
In her heart, she was bent on not going through with the marriage, despite what her mom was saying to her.
Mrs. Hank smiled and kissed her forehead. “You'll be fine sweetheart,” she said.
Jennifer waited until her mom had left the room, then she sprang into action.
She immediately gathered the few things she could, shoving them into a bag. Her heart raced as she tiptoed, trying not to draw any attention to herself.
She had made up her mind to wait for David at the bus station.
She still could not reach him, but she did not want to believe that he had abandoned her.
As soon as the house was calm, she opened the window and fled.
She ran as fast as she could, her heart racing as she did so.
She arrived at the bus station and saw an empty bench in a quiet corner. She sat there and waited for David.
Time went by as she tried not to think about what could happen if he didn't show up.
She didn't want to think about the reality of being forced into a loveless marriage.
Jennifer sat on the bench at the bus station with her bag placed on her thighs and her heart filled with disappointment.
She had been so sure that David would show up, but as the hours went by, it became crystal clear that he wasn't coming.
She tried calling one more time, but it still wasn't reachable. She didn't know what was going on, but she came to understand that she was now alone in this world.
Jennifer sat there, feeling lonely and lost, the skies began to darken and a light rain began to fall.
Her heart shattered terribly and she couldn't help but cry out loudly.
Just yesterday, he had promised that they would escape together to start life and live together forever, but he was gone now without a single trace, and tomorrow, she was supposed to marry a ruthless man she never knew nor loved.
She remained huddled up under the intensifying rain, crying bitterly, with no one to comfort her, she felt so abandoned.
She knew neither what to do nor where to go so she just sat there and let the heavy rain wash away her tears.
