Victoria Becker narrating:
I arrive at the diner where I work and head straight to grab my notepad to take down the orders.
— Good morning, Vic — my friend Den said. His real name is Deniel, but I call him Den.
— Good morning, Den — I greeted him.
To everyone here, I'm just a girl who lives with her father and needs some cash, not a girl abandoned by her mother who lives with a drug-addicted father and needs money to have something to eat and eventually escape the hell her life has become.
But enough about problems; the more you talk about them, the more you attract them.
— Table three is calling for you — Den said.
I quickly went to a couple of elderly people who were calling me.
— Good morning — I smiled. — What can I get for you?
— Two coffees and two slices of chocolate cake — the lady said.
— Alright, I'll be right back — I returned to the counter where I handed the order to Den to put on a tray.
The diner is quite large; Den and Louise prepare the orders while two other waitresses and I take the orders. Anny is at the cash register.
Today I see that my day will be very busy, as the place is quite crowded early in the morning.
— Here you go, Vic — he handed me the order.
After serving the couple, I go to attend a table with four teenagers. They look me up and down before one of them smiles slyly.
— Good morning, what can I get for you?
— You, cutie — the blond one said, smiling in a strange way at me.
— I'm not on the menu — I said seriously. — Please, what's your order?
— We wanted you, but since that's not an option, bring us three sodas, three burgers, and a portion of fries — the blond said.
I nodded as I took the note.
When I turned my back to leave, I felt someone touch my butt, anger consumed me, but if I argue, I will be the one to suffer the consequences... last month something similar happened, the girl argued with the customer and our boss, Mr. George, got very angry because the customer was someone important, and the girl ended up being seen as the one in the wrong.
Unfortunately, this is the society we live in, a woman experiences harassment and she is the one to blame, the man never ends up being seen as wrong. I really wanted to punch that guy in the face, but unfortunately, I know what my consequence will be if I do that... and I can't afford to lose my job.
I swallow all the anger I'm feeling and walk away as if nothing had happened. I ask another waitress to deliver the order, and she does. The rest of the day went on normally, the business slowed down in the afternoon, so I worked less.
[...]
A few weeks later...
I finish lunch and suddenly feel my stomach churn, vomit rises in my throat, and I rush towards the bathroom.
It was almost two in the afternoon when we stopped to have lunch, the diner was very busy, and only now we had time to eat.
I've been feeling strange for a few days now, my body feels odd, I've been vomiting a lot and feeling nauseous frequently.
— My God, Vic, what did you eat?— - Den asked, crouching down beside me.
— I don't know, I must have some kind of food poisoning because I've been feeling unwell lately — I said, flushing and getting up to wash my face.
— You'll be fine soon — he said affectionately.
After that, we went back to work, sometimes I felt a bit dizzy, but it soon passed.
When I finished my shift, I left the diner and went home to take a shower before heading out, as today I was going to sleep at Joana's house.
Tomorrow her parents will return from their trip, and she will be very busy helping them with the shop's affairs. It will also be more challenging for us to find time together since she is also studying, assisting her mother in the shop, and I have my job.
Jô is studying to become a pediatrician, she doesn't have many friends, but she talks a lot to me about someone called Eliza Fitzy. She said she wants to introduce me to her and mentioned that they talk a lot about me and that we will plan to go out together someday.
— Hi, Jô — I said as she opened the door.
— Hi, my boo — she smiled, — come in.
I entered and saw that she was watching a movie.
— I just started the movie, I was finishing making popcorn for us — she said.
— Do you need help?
— No need, I'm almost done — she said excitedly, — sit down, I'll go to the kitchen and be right back.
She left and returned after a few minutes with a huge bucket of popcorn. We started eating while watching the movie.
— This movie is great — she said, but I didn't respond because suddenly I started feeling nauseous — Vic, are you okay?
— Just feeling a bit queasy — I said, — lately I've been feeling this way. Today at the diner, I almost threw up my guts.
— What have you been feeling? — she asked curiously.
— Nausea, dizziness, I've been vomiting a lot, and lately I've been feeling more tired than usual — I said, — but this must be due to stress and lack of sleep. My father has been using drugs more than usual, disappeared for a week, leaving me worried, and work is killing me.
— I don't know, this sounds like something else — she said.
— What?
— Pregnancy — she said, making me feel a knot in my stomach. This can't be happening.
— No way, I'm not — I said.
— But you had s*x with that guy at the club — she said.
— But you gave me the pill — I replied, trying to convince myself that it wasn't happening.
— It could have failed, no contraceptive method is completely foolproof — she said, — Everyone who has s*x runs the risk of this happening.
— Damn, my life is a mess... how will I take care of a child like this?— I said, — she deserves a better life... I can't provide that for her.
— Calm down, let's not jump to conclusions — she said, — There's a pharmacy next door, I'll buy a test and be right back.
With that, she got up from the bed and rushed out, leaving me no chance to speak.
If this is true, what will I do?
My father can't know this at all, I don't even want to think about what he would do.
