Today is a new day.
Today is a bright day.
Today is a day for something new.
No worries to be had.
Leave everything behind and start your new day beautifully.
That's what I keep telling myself. I repeat those words in my head until my sister wakes me up with our traditional birthday kisses.
The first to wake up gives the other as many kisses as your age. So I woke up with 17 kisses today. I get to give her, her kisses at some point in the day.
Last year I woke up first and she gave me my 16 kisses in front of a guy that I liked. So this year I want to return the favour.
So I wake up, go take a shower, wear my black skinny jeans with a white print T-shirt, black heart shaped ear rings and gold pumps, plus my school bag. I apply light make-up to my face, cause my brother doesn't like us putting anything to hide our natural beauty.
But beauty aside, a girl needs a little something to hide the gifts of puberty you know.
So now I'm ready to be seen by the world. When I reach down stairs for breakfast, everyone is already there accept for my brother.
"Where's Jean-Blaze?" Total rush getting to call him by name. He always gets angry if we call him by name. I'm living on the wild side. Notice the sarcasm.
"Oh, he wanted to get an early start on his day, but did say to wish you both a happy birthday." This from my step dad while mom continues eating.
My sister and I share a look. "Okay then, MK come eat so we can arrive on time."
"Sure thing sistaz." I rush through my breakfast and we head to school.
The nice thing about me and my sister's relationship, we don't always need to be with each other. We have separate lives and we both like it that way, but we are totally close as well. There is nothing I don't know about my sister and visa/versa.
I drive us to school. We carpool a lot, but each twin has her own car. When we reach the front door of our school we are greeted by banners written happy birthday Mary, in red and white.
If you didn't know, you would think the banners are for both twins, just saving time on both names right. But the one who gives it away is my sister's best friend. She comes screeching at us holding a smaller version of the banner to show which Mary it's for. I don't really like her, but I can't choose my sister's friends.
I kiss my sister on the cheek and rush off before getting trampled by the satellite wanna-be.

I look at her as she walks away from her sister to her own friends.
I wish I had the courage to speak to her. She is so beautiful, and she is my mate. But I don't want to get within sniffing distance just yet. I know she won't mind being my mate, she is that perfect, but her father is the Alpha so I have to tread carefully.
"Still staring and not doing I see." This said by my best friend Sipho (The name translates to gift).
"Not everyone is like you. Some of us like to wait for the perfect moment." I say turning to him.
"Hey everyone can totally be like me. You were once"
I glare at him. "What was I supposed to do? Her sister started kissing her in front of me, then all-of-a-sudden everyone is counting, and singing happy birthday." I was still new last year, didn't know the twins did that to each other. "I did what came natural to me. I disappeared." Which lost me a chance with my mate.
"You didn't have to disappear for a year, dude." Sipho says.
"I know." I sigh. "But what choice did I have? She's the Alpha's daughter for christ-sake. Anything between us would not be welcomed, but I'm done waiting." I say watching her hug her friends.
"Let's go to class, man" I say pushing him in the direction of our class.
At lunch time we go buy our usual to eat, potato fried chips and a loaf of bread with fanta orange cold drink.
We go sit at our usual table and are so engrossed in our conversation, I don't even smell Mary-Katheryn coming near us. Not even realizing it I let out a menacing growl and leap to her. I land so close to her, I'm actually in her personal space and everyone around us is quiet, wanting to know what's going on.
"Mine." That's the first thing out of my mouth. And instead of laughing or running, she smiles at me and puts her hands around my neck.
"Oh, you took your time telling me." She says smiling at me. Taken aback I look around us and see her sister smiling too.
"Umm... Yeah... Kinda had to build up to it. Why are you and your sister smiling?" I say while rapping my own hands around her.
"Because, I just found my mate. I'm happy, so she's happy." Such a simple thing, but i feel like she is too relieved to be just that, but I let it go.
"Just like that?" I ask.
"Just like that." She says. We stop talking and just look into each other's eyes.
Everyone around us returns to whatever they were doing while we still stare at each other. "You need to sit and move out of the way bro." Sipho says after tapping my shoulder. Bringing me out of the trance I was in.
"Yeah..." I clear my throat. "Thanx." I look at Mary-Katheryn. "You wanna sit?"
"Yeah, you ruined my surprise anyway so... It's cool." I stair her in the direction of an empty table.
"Mmm..."
"I meant the whole birthday kisses thing. I was going to surprise kiss my sister while she was talking to her crash over there." She points and I see her sister still looking at us like she wants to come but is holding herself back.
"And who might her crash be?" I ask not seeing anyone near her sister.
"Peter, the soccer player." She taps my shoulder to look at her. So I take her hand and join it with mine.
"So how come you never said we were Mates last year? I know a girl can only tell who her Mate is, only after the guy acknowledges it." She says while interlocking our hands together. "Was I not worth you acknowledging me early? Did you not like me or something?" She rambles on and I just look at her. She is perfection to me. I would never want to change her.
"Sithadwa sami, you are perfection, there is nothing wrong with you." I move my hand to cup her cheek. "Never let anyone, not even me make you feel bad about yourself." I lean in to kiss her but the bell rings.
"Walk me to class?" We stand up and start walking.
"Yeah." When we reach her class door I turn her to me. "I want you to know, you are not the reason I never said anything about us being Mates." I take a huge breath and plunge on. If she rejects me so be it. "It's because I'm a low ranking wolf. If your father decided to challenge me for your hand I could never win, and I couldn't put that on you. Loosing a Mate at a young age is never easy." I say trying to get her to understand our predicament.
"The bell has already rung twice Mr. Sithole." The teacher says while glaring at me.
"See you after school." I kiss her cheek. "Sorry sir." I turn and run to my class.
