"He called me a vessel. I called myself a ghost. Now, he’ll call me his ruin." Five years ago, Elena Vance was the invisible wife of the cold-hearted billionaire Damian Blackwood. She lived for his smile, only to overhear him confessing to his mistress that Elena was nothing more than a "convenient vessel" for his inheritance.

Broken and pregnant, Elena faked her death in a watery grave. Now, she is back. But she isn't the mousy girl he once knew. She is Ava Thorne, a world-renowned architect with a heart of ice and a secret that will bring the Blackwood empire to its knees: three genius triplets who carry the Blackwood blood. Damian wants his heirs. He wants his wife back. But Ava isn't looking for a reunion. She’s looking for a reckoning. As the "Iceberg CEO" drops to his knees to beg for forgiveness, Ava has only one question: How much is a soul worth in the Blackwood family?

Chapter 1: The Convenient Vessel
The rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Blackwood estate, mirroring the coldness that had settled in Elena’s bones. She stood in the dimly lit hallway, her hand trembling as she clutched a small white stick. Two pink lines. She was pregnant. For three years, she had been the "ghost wife" of Damian Blackwood. She had stayed in the shadows, attended the galas he demanded, and endured the icy silence of their marriage, all because she loved him. She thought that perhaps, if she gave him an heir, the man who had bought her out of her family’s debt would finally look at her with something other than indifference. A muffled laugh drifted from Damian’s private study. Elena froze. He never laughed. "You’re being too cruel, Damian. What if she finds out?" The voice belonged to Cynthia Sterling Damian’s "assistant" and the woman the media constantly whispered was his true love. Elena approached the cracked door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She peered through the gap. Damian was sitting behind his desk, his tie loosened, looking more relaxed than Elena had ever seen him. Cynthia was perched on the edge of the mahogany desk, her fingers trailing over his shoulder. "Find out what?" Damian’s voice was like velvet over gravel deep, rich, and utterly devoid of warmth. "That this marriage is a business transaction? Elena knows her place. She was a convenient vessel to satisfy my grandfather’s will. Nothing more." Cynthia giggled, a sharp sound that sliced through Elena’s soul. "But she looks at you like you’re the sun and the stars. It’s almost pathetic. Don't you feel a little bad? She’s been trying so hard to play the perfect wife." Damian leaned back, his grey eyes turning into shards of ice. "She is a charity case, Cynthia. I saved her from the streets. If she’s developed feelings, that’s her own delusion. Once the five-year mark hits and the inheritance is secured, I’ll provide her with a settlement and a divorce. She’ll be gone, and we won't have to play this game anymore." Elena felt the world tilt. The pregnancy test in her hand felt like a lead weight. A vessel. A charity case. "What if she gets pregnant before then?" Cynthia asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The elders are pressuring you." Damian’s lip curled in a sneer that made Elena’s blood run cold. "I’ve made sure she won't. And even if she did... I wouldn't want a child from a woman like her. A Blackwood heir deserves a mother with spine, with status. Not a girl whose family sold her for a check." The hallway grew dark as Elena’s vision blurred with hot, stinging tears. She didn't stay to hear the rest. She turned and ran, her footsteps muffled by the thick Persian rugs that cost more than her father’s life had been worth. She burst into their bedroom his bedroom and began shoving clothes into a small suitcase. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking. Every word he had said replayed in her mind like a jagged record. Delusion. Charity case. A woman like her. She looked at the pregnancy test sitting on the vanity. He didn't want her child. He would likely force her into a "settlement" that involved giving up the baby or, worse, getting rid of it. "I won't let you touch them," she whispered, her voice cracking. She didn't know yet that there were three hearts beating inside her, but she knew she had to protect the life he had just discarded. She grabbed her passport and the secret stash of cash she had been saving from her meager allowance money she had intended to use for a birthday gift for him. What a fool she had been. She scribbled a note on the nightstand, her tears smudging the ink. Damian, You don’t have to wait two more years. You’re free. She slipped out the back entrance, avoiding the security cameras she knew were blind for ten minutes during the shift change. The rain drenched her instantly, shivering her to the bone, but she didn't stop. She hailed a taxi at the edge of the estate’s long driveway. "To the docks," she told the driver. As the car sped away from the Blackwood mansion, Elena looked back at the glowing lights of the study. She saw two silhouettes against the window. Goodbye, Damian, she thought, pressing her hand to her still-flat stomach. You wanted a wife with spine? You’re about to find out exactly what happens when you break one. Thirty minutes later, the news would report a horrific accident. A taxi had lost control on the slick pier, plunging into the dark, churning waters of the Atlantic. There were no survivors found. Elena Vance was dead. And in her place, a storm was brewing.
