The slow clap echoed through the underground room, each sound bouncing off the cold concrete walls. Daniel’s heart pounded as he stared into the darkness. The voice was unmistakable.
“You’ve done well,” the man said, stepping into the faint emergency light.
Daniel’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Chief Inspector Reynolds?”
The detective who had once praised Daniel’s courage now stood before him with a smug smile. Marcus raised his pistol immediately, but Reynolds laughed.
“You really think you can stop this?” he asked calmly. “This city has belonged to us for years.”
Daniel felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The man he had trusted was part of the conspiracy.
“You’ve been behind the murders?” Daniel asked.
“Not all of them,” Reynolds replied. “I simply make sure the investigations never reach the truth.”
Marcus’s jaw clenched. “You’re under arrest.”
Before he could move, armed men emerged from the shadows, surrounding them with rifles.
“Drop your weapon,” Reynolds ordered.
Marcus looked at Daniel. One glance was enough—they both understood.
Instead of surrendering, Marcus kicked over a metal shelf. It crashed into the gunmen, sending papers and boxes flying everywhere. Daniel grabbed the computer’s hard drive containing Project Silent Witness and ran.
Gunfire erupted through the basement as Marcus covered Daniel’s escape.
They raced toward the staircase, but Reynolds shouted after them.
“You can run, but the truth will destroy you!”
Daniel didn’t look back. He knew the hard drive held answers that powerful people were willing to kill for. But one question haunted him above all:
Why had they been watching him years before he ever took the fatal photograph?
