Chapter 5: The Hidden Basement

303 Words
The silence inside the abandoned warehouse was suffocating. Every step Daniel took echoed through the dark corridors as he tightened his grip on his camera. The mysterious symbol he had found in the previous chapter matched the mark carved into an old steel door at the end of the hallway. “Stay behind me,” Kira whispered, drawing her pistol. Daniel swallowed hard. “What if we’re too late?” “We’ll find out soon.” Kira forced the rusted door open, revealing a narrow staircase leading underground. The air grew colder with every step. At the bottom was a hidden basement filled with dusty shelves, old computers, and dozens of locked filing cabinets. Daniel switched on his flashlight and gasped. Every cabinet was labeled with dates stretching back more than twenty years. “This isn’t just a hideout,” he murmured. “It’s an archive.” Before Kira could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed above them. “They found us,” she whispered. Daniel quickly inserted the flash drive into one of the computers. The screen flickered to life, revealing thousands of confidential files, photographs, and surveillance videos. Every victim connected to the mysterious serial killer had been watched long before they disappeared. Suddenly, one folder caught Daniel’s attention. Project Silent Witness. His hands trembled as he opened it. The first file displayed his own photograph. Taken three years ago. Someone had been watching him long before he accidentally photographed the killer. “Daniel…” Kira said quietly, staring at the screen. “This was never an accident.” The lights suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed the room. A slow clap echoed through the basement. “Congratulations,” a cold voice said. “You’ve finally discovered the truth.” Daniel recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to someone he had trusted.
