The Invisible Boy Becomes a Hero: A High School Love Storytitled
Shinji Saito was the kind of quiet high school student who blended easily into the background. He was so unremarkable that some people called him an "introvert," noticing he barely made his presence felt in class.
One morning, as usual, a couple of his classmates started picking on him.
"Dude, did you forget your notebook again? You're totally useless," one sneered.
Another chimed in, "Yeah, shut it, introvert. Ever heard of reading the room?"
But Shinji just sat at his desk, never talking back. He'd gotten used to it, and all he really wanted was to get by quietly without standing out.
Suddenly, the classroom door swung open with a loud bang. Every gaze shifted toward the entrance, where Ami Kamishiro—often called the school's "madonna"—stood with her long black hair swaying gracefully. Her cool, confident aura seemed to captivate everyone around. Without hesitating, she made her way straight to Shinji's desk.
"Shinji Saito," she said softly.
He blinked in surprise. Until this moment, he'd never exchanged more than a passing glance with Ami Kamishiro.
"Huh? Me?" he asked, a little stunned.
She nodded, her expression unwavering. "Starting today, you're going to be my personal knight!"
For a moment, time seemed to stop in the classroom. The other students exchanged baffled looks, struggling to process what she had just declared.
"What!? Saito is Kamishiro's knight? You've gotta be kidding!" one student exclaimed.
"Why him, of all people?" another muttered.
Shinji's mind spun. "W-wait, hold on... what does that even mean?"
Ami, however, offered no further explanation. "I'll tell you later," she said simply. "Meet me at the school gate after class."
She turned on her heel and walked out before he could ask anything else. Confusion filled the room, but no one seemed more bewildered than Shinji himself. He placed a hand over his chest and exhaled a small sigh. (Me... Ami Kamishiro's 'knight'? What's going on...?) That thought stuck with him for the rest of the day.
When classes ended, Shinji found himself waiting by the school gate. Normally, he would have rushed home, but he couldn't shake his curiosity. Was she serious? Or was this some strange joke?
Before long, Ami appeared by his side as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Hope I didn't keep you waiting, Shinji."
He could feel the curious stares of other students but tried to stay calm. "Uh... so what exactly do you mean by 'personal knight'?" he asked tentatively.
Ami's expression turned serious. "Shinji, I have a problem. Someone's been following me lately," she confessed. "It happens at night, usually near the station... so I want someone I can rely on to protect me."
"Why me, though?" Shinji questioned. "There are guys in class who are a lot stronger than I am..."
She shook her head and met his eyes. "Because I trust you more than anyone. You may not stand out, but you're always calm and kind. I want someone like that by my side."
Shinji was momentarily speechless. He wasn't the type to ignore a person in need, no matter how unexpected the request.
"...Alright," he finally said. "I'll do what I can."
"Thank you! I'm really counting on you, Shinji," Ami responded with a bright smile. Something about that smile stirred a faint sense of purpose inside him—maybe he really could be useful to someone after all.
That night, Shinji went with Ami on a quick shopping trip, keeping a short distance behind her just in case. And sure enough, he soon spotted a suspicious man trailing a few steps behind.
(...So it wasn't just her imagination.) Carefully, Shinji moved in, grabbing the man's arm just as he started to approach Ami.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing?" he demanded.
The man struggled. "D-damn it! Let go!"
Luckily, Shinji had learned self-defense techniques growing up. He pinned the stranger down, drawing the attention of a passing police officer.
"What's going on here?" the officer asked, hurrying over.
"This guy's been following her," Shinji explained.
The officer restrained the stalker and led him to a patrol car. Though the man grimaced in frustration, he couldn't deny the accusation.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Ami turned to Shinji. "Thank you so much... You even called the police, and now I can finally feel safe."
He gave her a small nod. "I'm just glad you're okay. If anything else happens, let me know."
Ami's eyes glistened with tears. Shinji felt his own heartbeat pound in his ears. The incident was over, but the responsibility he felt for protecting her lingered.
The next day, rumors about the stalker incident spread across the school. Whispers flew about how the usually "invisible" Shinji Saito had saved Ami Kamishiro. People started seeing him in a whole new light.
That afternoon, Shinji stood once again at the school gate, replaying the events of the night before in his mind. Soon, Ami approached with a gentler look in her eyes.
"Shinji, sorry to keep you waiting," she said, stepping closer.
He shook his head. "No problem at all."
She hesitated for a second, cheeks faintly pink. "I want to thank you again. If it hadn't been for you..." She trailed off, looking briefly away. "I don't know what might have happened. Really... thank you."
Shinji felt a little embarrassed. "Don't mention it. I just did what anyone would do if they saw someone in trouble."
"Still, it was a huge deal to me." She paused, gathering her courage. "I... I want to get to know you better, Shinji. So would you stay by my side?"
For a moment, Shinji couldn't believe what he was hearing. Ami Kamishiro—the idol of the school—wanted him around?
"If you're okay with me... sure," he managed to say, the words coming out almost automatically.
Ami responded with a radiant smile and gently took his hand. "I'm so glad... thank you, Shinji."
He could hear the hushed murmurs of students around them, but it didn't matter. All he cared about was this new connection that felt both sudden and precious.
And so began the unexpected bond between a quiet, unremarkable boy and the school's most admired girl. No one could predict what might happen next, but for now, they both wanted to savor this moment of promise.
