Chapter 1: The night he chose to live
Eli Mercer was tired. Not the kind of tired sleep could fix. Not the kind cured by rest or silence or a few better days. He was tired in the way abandoned buildings looked tired. Like something left standing for too long despite already falling apart inside. The city blurred past the train window while rain crawled slowly against the glass. Around him, people scrolled through their phones, laughed quietly with friends, or slept against each other's shoulders after long shifts. Nobody noticed him. Nobody ever did. Eli lowered his hood slightly and stared at the reflection looking back at him. Pale face. Hollow eyes. Lips split faintly from cold weather he'd stopped caring about weeks ago. His phone vibrated. Another message. He didn't check it. He already knew what it would say. PAY YOUR BALANCE BEFORE- Blocked. Another vibration immediately after. His landlord this time probably. Eli muted the phone entirely before shoving it back into his pocket. For a while, all he heard was the sound of train tracks rattling beneath his feet. Then music filled his ears. Soft at first. Familiar. Without thinking, Eli opened the old video saved on his phone. Kai Vale appeared on screen beneath silver stage lights, smiling brightly toward thousands of screaming fans. Perfect posture. Perfect voice. Perfect face. Perfect illusion. Eli watched quietly as Kai laughed during the interview segment, hair slightly damp from sweat after performing. People loved Kai because he looked untouchable. Eli liked him because he didn't. There was something hidden underneath those smiles. Exhaustion maybe. Loneliness. Sometimes during livestreams, Kai would go quiet for a second too long before smiling again like nothing happened. Nobody else noticed. Eli did. Always. The train announcement echoed overhead. Last stop. He stood slowly. Rain greeted him the moment he stepped outside the station. Cold wind bit through his hoodie as he walked through nearly empty streets illuminated by neon reflections and passing headlights. His shoes splashed through shallow puddles while distant sirens echoed somewhere deeper within the city. His chest felt strangely calm tonight. That was how he knew things were bad. Because even despair had become exhausting eventually. The river came into view quietly beneath the bridge lights. Dark water. Endless. Eli stepped closer to the railing. Cars rushed past behind him, unaware. His hands trembled slightly from the cold as he climbed onto the ledge. The wind up there felt stronger. For a moment, he simply stared downward. No fear. That surprised him most. He thought there would be fear. Instead there was only relief. No more overdue notices. No more empty apartment. No more waking up disappointed he survived another day. Rain dampened his hair slowly as Eli closed his eyes. Then- "Hey!" A voice cut sharply through the night. Eli opened his eyes. Footsteps approached quickly behind him. "Wait-" Annoyance flickered briefly through Eli's numbness. Of course someone had to interfere now of all times. He turned slightly. A man stood several feet away wearing a black hoodie and cap pulled low over his face. Beautiful eyes. That was Eli's first thought. Even hidden beneath shadows and rain, the stranger looked unfairly beautiful. "Don't," the man said quietly. Eli almost laughed. People always said that. As if a single word could suddenly fix a lifetime. "You don't understand," Eli murmured. The stranger stared at him for a long moment before stepping closer carefully. "You'll freeze to death out here," he said. "At least let me buy you something warm first." Eli blinked slowly. What? "That's your argument?" The stranger let out a soft breath that almost sounded amused despite the tension. "It's all I've got right now." Rain continued falling between them. Eli studied him silently. Something about the man felt tired too. Not physically. Something deeper. Like he was carrying invisible bruises beneath his skin. "Then if you still want to jump after that..." the stranger continued softly, "I won't stop you." A lie. Eli could tell immediately. Still... For the first time that night, hesitation touched him. The stranger's eyes held no disgust. No pity either. Just concern. Pure and simple. It felt unfamiliar enough to hurt. Slowly, Eli stepped down from the ledge. The stranger visibly relaxed afterward, though he tried hiding it. Cute. That thought startled Eli more than anything else tonight. They walked together in silence afterward toward a nearby convenience store glowing softly beneath fluorescent lights. Eli sat across from the stranger near the window while steam rose from untouched ramen cups between them. The man kept his hood low. Suspicious. But Eli found himself oddly comforted by his presence anyway. "You should eat before it gets soggy," the stranger said. Eli stared at him quietly. "...Why are you helping me?" The question seemed to catch him off guard. For a moment, silence stretched heavily between them. Then the stranger looked down at his ramen. "Because nobody helped me when I needed it." Something tightened painfully inside Eli's chest. The man laughed awkwardly afterward like he regretted saying it. But it was too late. Eli had already memorized the sadness hidden behind those words. "What's your name?" the stranger asked. Eli hesitated. "...Eli." "Kai." The world stopped. Not physically. Just inside Eli's head. Kai. No wonder. No wonder that voice sounded familiar. No wonder those eyes looked recognizable beneath the hood. Slowly, Eli looked up fully this time. And there he was. Kai Vale. The same person whose songs filled Eli's empty apartment at 3AM. The same person whose smile kept him alive through nights no one knew existed. Right in front of him. Real. Breathing. Warm. Kai kept eating casually, completely unaware of the storm unfolding silently inside Eli's mind. Meanwhile Eli could only stare. Because suddenly- dying no longer felt important anymore.
