Heartbeats and Hiccups

Yumi had never been the type to make a grand entrance. In fact, she'd rather blend into the background—especially in a school like Seoul High, where everyone seemed to have their lives perfectly together. She wasn’t the kind of girl who fit into any of the cliques. Her first day at Seoul High was... chaotic, to say the least. The second her sneakers hit the polished floors of the school, she felt the weight of a thousand eyes on her. New girl syndrome. She wanted to shrink into the walls, but that wasn't an option when the head cheerleader, Soojin, was already walking toward her with a look of curiosity. "Hey," Soojin said with a bright, dazzling smile. "You must be Yumi, the transfer student, right?" "Uh, yeah," Yumi mumbled, nervously adjusting her backpack. "I’m Yumi." "Nice to meet you! We have the same first-period class. Come sit with me during lunch, okay?" Yumi didn’t know if she was supposed to be excited or terrified. She had spent her whole life avoiding attention, but here she was, walking into a cafeteria filled with gossip and laughter. She had no choice but to follow Soojin to her usual seat. As she sat down, Yumi felt a tap on her shoulder. Turning around, she saw a pair of piercing eyes staring straight at her. It was Hyun—the school’s most popular (and most notorious) student. "Don’t sit with her," Hyun said, his voice dripping with an air of superiority. Yumi raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?" Hyun leaned in, his smirk growing wider. "Soojin’s a drama queen. You might not want to get involved with her. She’ll just drag you into her mess." Yumi wasn’t in the mood for some self-appointed school king telling her what to do. She wasn’t going to back down from a challenge. "Thanks for the advice," she said, a sarcastic smile pulling at her lips. "But I’m good." Hyun seemed taken aback by her boldness. He shrugged and walked away, leaving Yumi feeling both annoyed and strangely… satisfied. The rest of the day passed in a blur of introductions and awkward conversations, but something about Hyun’s words stuck with her. Was he right? Was Soojin really a mess, or was he just trying to mark his territory? She couldn’t tell yet. Later that afternoon, during gym class, Yumi found herself in the middle of a game of dodgeball. She wasn't particularly athletic, but that didn’t stop her from trying her best. As the ball came flying toward her, she hesitated for a moment, only to have the ball bounce off her chest and smack Hyun square in the face. The entire gym went silent for a split second, and then—laughter erupted. Hyun blinked, stunned. He stood there, hand on his forehead, glaring at Yumi. "Nice aim," he muttered sarcastically. Yumi couldn’t help herself. She burst out laughing, her nervousness melting away. "Guess I’m a natural." Hyun looked at her, his expression unreadable. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, still glaring, but there was a hint of something softer in his eyes. Was it amusement? Maybe. But Yumi wasn’t about to read too much into it.
