The beginning
Annie’s POV
Running as fast as feet can flee, the loud clanking of shoes on pavement. Looking behind to realize there is no escape from what is coming, there is no way to outrun him! *CRASH* falling from the sidewalk into the street, he is now hovering over and before a blood curdling scream can even escape the lips, blood pools on the ground and the blackness consumes, as death comes creeping in.
*yawn* “seriously how do you convince me to watch these scary movies before bed?”, I ask my roommate Olivia, who is sitting cross legged on the couch eating popcorn with a huge smile on her face.
“Oh come on Annie that wasn’t even that scary, besides it’s just a bunch of actors and actresses with special effects, and some really awesome make up, you have seen way scarier things in the real world.”
She definitely wasn’t wrong, working as a reporter I’ve seen some gruesome things, like car crash victims, hostage situations, and shoot outs with the cops. I’ve been the first on scene to plenty of natural disasters, and I even once covered a story on a a serial killer who dismembered bodies and kept them in his freezer to eat.
Even with all that nothing freaked me out more than the thought of vampires. They could be the most attractive person you ever met, follow you as a bat in the night and strike at any moment, you could be in the throws of lovemaking only to have the life sucked from you. Sure sunlight could kill, but you don’t have that when you’re sleeping. I guess it’s a good thing vampires are nothing more then fiction.
“Either way, I need to cleanse my pallet before bed, how about we watch the news?” “Ugh” Olivia begins to protest, “you report for a living don’t you get your fill of news? Doesn’t this worlds problems bring you down, it is so depressing to watch.”
“Oh Olivia you are so dramatic. Yes there is bad in the world but there is a lot of good things going on too! Besides it wouldn’t hurt you to learn about everything going on around you in the world.”
Olivia crosses her arms and raises an eye brow. “Fine but only because you binged the vamps blood series with me.” I let out a giggle then reach over to hug her, and rip the remote from her hand. *click*
“I tell you what, we had that strange rare white bat sighting in the orchard a week or so ago, next night there had to of been about a 100 bats. Couple days later I seen one at about 1 in the afternoon downtown, musta been rabid seeing as it was out in the day. Anywho bit a lady and I ain’t talkin bout no little bite, took a chunk out of her. She started to seize and shake, blood and white foam coming from her mouth. I didn’t call no one because think I was in shock. Someone must have called though because on my way back she was gone.”
“See this Olivia, this is why I hate bats such nasty little creatures.”, Olivia gives me her best sad eyes, “but they are so cute and you heard the man it was rabid, poor baby.” Olivia didn’t even seem fazed that a women was killed, her greatest concern was a nasty rodent. Go figure. I decide to change the channel.
“As you can see we had to run inside, there appears to be a group of murderous cannibals outside, we are barricaded and waiting for police to arrive.”
The camera zooms in on three rather pale looking people with extremely bloodshot eyes, half glazed over and faces sunken in almost like they haven’t eaten in months. One has grabbed a man by his throat and is throwing him down only to crawl around him manically, almost as if taunting his prey. The second, a women covered in blood is eating away on a large mans throat with a satisfied smile as she comes up for air. The third seems to have finished his prey, eyes searching for another.
“Oh my lord, I’ve never seen anything like this!” I gasp trying to hold back the sickness building in my throat. I look over and see Olivia with her mouth hanging wide open.
She turns to me , “Oh my Annie this is like something out of a horror movie, dear god please turn it.”
I have to hold back a small laugh at her request, “Oh so you can stomach back to back horror flicks, but this gets to you?”
Olivia looks at me with a mix of disgust and maybe disappointment? “Get a grip Annie this isn’t a made up storyline with actors and a script this is real life!!” Fair enough I think to myself. *Click*, *Click*, *Click*
Olivia quickly grabs the remote from my hand, “Don’t even think about changing the Chanel.” Olivia squeals at me like a love struck fan girl.
Pete Vandorvelg was on the T.V. And I had to admit he was quite easy to look at. He was well built, lean, muscular, but more toned, not super bulky. He had dark thick, luxurious hair that always seemed to be clean cut, and nicely styled. He had the most beautiful sunken in green almost emerald colored eyes that you could get lost in even though he wasn’t physically there.
When he spoke his voice was powerful yet soothing and sultry, and every word was smooth like velvet. He had an air about him, he commanded attention without actually commanding it.
Pete was not only the CEO to one of the largest blood transfusion companies in the country, but he was also the governor of the state.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, I know you all have a lot of questions and concerns regarding the recent bat infestations and attacks, and I have every intention of addressing each and every one of your concerns. However, before I address those concerns I must first make an important announcement. Recently we have had a position open up at our headquarters in our media department. We need someone strong, dedicated, and prepared to handle any and every task that could be put upon you. This is a job that should not be taken lightly. It will require blood, sweat, and tears. Only the most qualified, experienced, strong, and dedicated should apply. If you feel you are the perfect fit please e-mail our HR department or call the number at the bottom of your screen. All qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews over the next 48 hours.”
The audience shared a collective gasp and began to whisper and converse amongst each other
”Now let’s get down to business shall we?” Pete says as he clasps his hands together and turns on his bright charming dimpled smile to the masses.
“THIS. IS. HUGE!!!” Olivia screams while bouncing up and down. She wasn’t wrong, other than his close circle of associates, most of the employees were related in some form, and the ones that weren’t related were either married to family, or childhood friends. This was once in a lifetime for the right person indeed.
“Annie you have to apply!”, Olivia plead with me.
“Oh please, I would never get picked, I’m sure there are people far more qualified.” Olivia crosses her arms over her chest and raises her eyebrow. I see her look at the phone and motion with her head toward it.
“Either you call and apply Annie, or I’m doing it for you.” She says with full determination in her voice.
I roll my eyes and grab the phone. Sure, I am well known in our community, and respected, but I highly doubt I’m qualified enough to work for someone as powerful as Vondervelg. However, I decide to appease my friend because otherwise I’ll never hear the end of it. “Fine.”
