Chapter 1: Rejected On My Mating Night.
The moon was full tonight.
It hung over Blackridge Pack like a silver eye, too bright, too judgmental. The air smelled of pine, wet earth, blood, and fear. Mine.
I stood in the center of the ceremonial circle, barefoot on the cold stone. The chill bit into my soles and traveled up my legs until my bones ached. My white dress was simple. Handmade. The hem was already dirty from the walk here. Too simple compared to the silk gowns the other girls wore to their matings, all lace and pearls and money. But I didn’t care. Tonight wasn’t about the dress.
Tonight was the night the Moon Goddess finally gave me what I’d waited 20 years for.
A mate.
My heart was pounding so loud I was sure the whole pack could hear it. Thump. Thump. Thump. Like a drum before war. Like a countdown.
I risked a glance up from under my lashes.
Alpha King Darius Blackwood stood on the raised dais.
He was everything the stories said he was and more. Tall. Shoulders that could block out the moon. Black hair falling over storm-gray eyes that had ruled this pack since he was 18. The mark of a king, a black wolf with a crown, was branded on the side of his neck. At 25, he was the youngest Alpha King in pack history. The strongest. The coldest. The one every girl in this pack dreamed of at night.
And tonight, he was supposed to be mine.
The thought made my stomach flip. Not with fear. With hope. With five years of hope.
I’d loved Darius from afar since I was 15. He was the only one who didn’t laugh when the other kids called me "the orphan omega" and "weakling Lyra." When I was 16 and collapsed from hunger during training, he was the one who left bread at my door. No note. Just bread. Still warm.
I told myself it meant something. That he saw me. That he remembered my name.
Every full moon since then, I prayed to the Moon Goddess. _Please. Let it be him. Let me be enough for him._
The crowd of 200 wolves surrounded the circle. My pack. People I’d grown up with. I saw the butcher’s wife who used to give me extra scraps. I saw my old training instructor who said I’d never be strong enough. Some watched with pity. Most watched with expectation. Waiting to see the weak omega get lucky. Waiting to see me fail.
My wolf, Astra, was quiet inside me. Too quiet. She hadn’t spoken in days. Not since we felt Darius near yesterday. It scared me.
The High Priestess, Elder Mara, stepped forward. Her silver robes dragged on the stone, whispering like ghosts. In her hand was the ceremonial dagger. Ancient. The handle carved with wolves and moons, stained dark from decades of blood.
She didn’t look at me. She never did. Omegas were invisible to people like her.
"Lyra Hale," she said, voice echoing off the stone walls. "Step forward."
My legs shook. I did. One step. Two. My bare feet left faint prints on the stone.
She took my hand. Her fingers were ice. The blade was cold against my palm. A quick sting, and blood welled up, red and bright against my pale skin. It dripped fast.
Then she did the same to herself. Our blood dripped together into the silver bowl at her feet. It sizzled. The smell of copper filled the air.
"By the Moon Goddess," Elder Mara chanted, her voice rising. "By the blood of the pack. By the light of the full moon. Let the mate bond reveal itself."
The air went still. Even the crickets stopped. Even the wind died.
I closed my eyes. _Please. Please let it be him._
_Let him be mine. Let me be enough. Let five years of hoping mean something._
A searing heat burned across my chest, right over my heart. Like a brand. Like sunlight.
I gasped. My eyes flew open.
The mate mark was there. Glowing faintly on my collarbone. A crescent moon with a crown through it. Silver light pulsed from it, once, twice. Beautiful. Perfect.
His mark.
A roar went up from the crowd. Some cheered. Most whispered.
"He got the omega?"
"The orphan?"
"The weak one?"
"This is a mistake."
I didn’t hear them. I only saw him.
I looked up at Darius, tears already burning in my eyes. My mate. My Alpha. "Darius," I whispered. His name felt like a prayer on my tongue. Like the answer to every prayer I’d ever said.
He looked down at me from the dais.
And his face… his face wasn’t happy. It wasn’t shocked. It wasn’t anything.
It was disgust. Pure, cold disgust. Like he’d bitten into something rotten. Like I was dirt on his shoe.
The bond snapped between us.
I felt it. That invisible golden thread that was supposed to tie us together forever, soul to soul. I felt it spark to life for one second. Warm. Bright. Home.
Then it went taut.
Then it went cold. Dead. Snapped in half.
The pain hit me like a physical blow. I staggered.
Darius raised his hand. The whole pack quieted instantly. The only sound was my own ragged breathing and the blood dripping from my hand into the bowl.
"I, Alpha King Darius Blackwood," his voice boomed, echoing off the trees, off the mountains, off my bones. It was the voice that commanded armies. "Reject you, Lyra Hale, as my mate and future Luna."
The world stopped.
What.
The word didn’t make it past my lips. It died in my throat. Choked me.
Rejected. He was rejecting me. On my mating night. In front of everyone. In front of the Moon Goddess.
"No," I breathed. "The mark— it’s there. I can feel—"
"The mark is wrong," Darius cut me off, finally looking at me. His gray eyes were empty. Void. "The Moon Goddess made a mistake."
Laughter. Someone in the back snorted. Then another. Then a whole wave of it.
I felt the mate mark on my chest burn like fire, then go dark. The light snuffed out like a candle. Leaving only a faint, ugly scar. Dead.
Pain shot through me. Not physical. Worse. Like someone had reached into my chest and ripped my soul in half. Astra howled inside me once, a broken sound, and then went silent.
He wasn’t even looking at me anymore. He was looking past me. To her.
Selene Vance. Daughter of Beta Vance. Beautiful. Curvy. Red silk dress that cost more than I’d made in a year. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect everything.
She stepped forward and took his hand like she’d been waiting for it. Like this was her moment.
"I choose Selene Vance," Darius announced. "Daughter of my Beta. She is my chosen mate. She is strong. She is worthy. She will be Luna."
More cheers this time. Real cheers. Loud.
Selene looked at me and smiled. That slow, cruel smile I remembered from school when she tripped me in the hall. "Better luck next life, orphan," she mouthed. Her eyes were bright with victory.
My knees buckled.
The High Priestess caught me before I hit the stone. Her grip was bruising on my arm. She smelled like old incense and disapproval.
"Take her away," Darius ordered, voice bored now. Like he was done. Like I was trash to be removed. "The ceremony is over. The celebration begins."
Two guards grabbed my arms. Their hands were rough. I was too numb to fight. Too numb to feel the stone scraping my knees as they pulled me.
As they dragged me back, past the crowd, I heard it all. Every whisper cut.
"The weak omega. What did she expect?"
"Alpha King deserves better."
"I heard she stalked him for years. Pathetic."
"She should thank him for not killing her."
"An omega like that will never find another mate."
I kept my eyes on the ground. On my bare, bleeding feet. On the hem of my stupid white dress that was now smeared with mud and blood.
I thought about the bread. About being 16 and hungry and finding it at my door. Was that pity too? Was it all a lie?
But at the edge of the circle, I looked up one last time.
Darius was already kissing Selene’s hand. Already smiling. His arm around her waist like she belonged there.
His eyes flicked to mine for half a second.
There was nothing there. No regret. No apology. No flicker of the boy who’d left me bread.
Just nothing. Emptiness.
The guards threw me outside the pack house gates. The big iron doors slammed shut behind me with a sound like a coffin closing.
The rain started.
Cold. Heavy. It soaked my dress in seconds and turned the dirt to mud. I sank to my knees in it, clutching my chest where the dead mark was. Where my heart used to be.
The bond was gone. The hope was gone. The five years were gone.
The Moon Goddess made a mistake.
And I was the one paying for it.
Alone. In the rain. Rejected.
Astra didn’t answer when I called her.
