THE CHRISTMAS PARTY

390 Words
Emily's eyes sparkled as she helped Sophie get ready for the high school Christmas party. They had spent hours picking out the perfect dress, a beautiful red velvet gown that made Sophie look like a miniature version of Mrs. Claus. As they finished up Sophie's hair, Emily couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia. She had attended this same party back in high school, and it had always been one of her favorite events of the year. But as she looked around at the bustling hallway, Emily realized that something was off. Everyone seemed to have a date, and the couples were all laughing and chatting together. Emily's mind flashed back to her own high school days. She had always had a date to the Christmas party, courtesy of her then-boyfriend, Jake. But Jake had quickly found his true mate, and Emily had been left to navigate the dating world on her own. As she watched the happy couples, Emily couldn't help but feel a little left out. Why did it seem like everyone else had found their perfect match, while she was still flying solo? Just then, the principal's voice came over the loudspeaker, announcing the start of the party. Emily smiled and took Sophie's hand, leading her into the crowded gym. The music was loud and the lights were flashing, and Emily felt a surge of excitement as she scanned the room. Maybe this party wouldn't be so bad after all. But as she made her way through the crowds, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced around, but everyone seemed to be having too much fun to pay her any attention. That was when she saw him – Jack, her brother's best friend, standing across the room and staring straight at her. Emily's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, and she felt a flutter in her chest. What was Jack doing here? And why was he looking at her like that? As Emily tried to process her emotions, the music changed and the lights dimmed. The principal's voice came over the loudspeaker once again, announcing the start of the dancing. And that was when Emily realized that she was in trouble. Everyone around her seemed to have a dancing partner, and she was the only one left standing alone.
