Chapter seven: Protection

1000 Words
Grant POV I made it to Amiela room. Dr. Wood was there checking on her. I try not to growl because he is touching my mate. I have to remind myself that this is her doctor, and the touch is strictly professional. No one touches my mate, but me. As I walked in, Amiela looked at me, and her eyes widened they looked green the last time, and now they looked golden brown. it must be the lighting. "You're still here," she said in a shocked tone. "Yes," is all I said as I sit down in the chair next to her bed. "Why?" she asked "Because you're in danger, and I'm here to protect you," I said like it was obvious. "Why would someone attack me, and it was one of your people?" she asks "I don't know, but I'm going to find out." I said, and when I do, there going to be hell to pay. The beast who attacked my mate will die a slow and painful death, but I don't tell her that. The witches said it was an orc, but I'm still not convinced why an orc would attack her. "Why are you still here?" she said I looked at her confused because she had already asked that. "I'm here to protect you." I say "But why I'm nothing to you? Why protect me?" she said I want to tell her she everything to me, but I don't want to scare her off by being overpowering. Take it slow, I say to myself. "it's my job to protect you because if an orc attacked you it my job to find him and punish him." I say I could have sworn I saw disappointment on her face, but it was hard to tell I'm not good at reading expressions, especially someone who is not an orc. Just then, Dr. Wood cleared his throat I forgot he was there. I was only focused on Amiela. So I was annoyed when I had to take my eyes off her to look at him. "Can I speak to you for a moment?" He asked I nodded and turned back to Amiela "I'll be right outside. Just yell if you need anything." I said, trying to make my voice soft and gentle, which I'm not used to doing and followed, Dr. Wood out the door. Dr. Wood turned to me quickly. "Why didn't you tell her you're her mate?" He said "Because from what I know, humans don't have mates. If I don't want to mess things up, I have to go slow. Like you said, be patient." I told him using his word against him, and then I added "And keep your voice down, I don't want anyone hearing." It's not safe for people to know she, my mate, yet. I got enemies everywhere who would use her to get to me. I got to protect her at all costs. "Yes, I told you to be patient, but I didn't tell you to lie." He said in an exasperated tone. "I didn't lie. I just didn't tell her everything." I say Dr. Wood just rolled his eyes and changed the subject. "I heard from the council today." He said My blood ran cold. "What did they say?" I ask, hoping for good news. "They want to have a meeting decided what to do to the women or the problem their words not mine." He said, looking grimm. "We just have to convince them that they are useful and won't try to betray us." I say not convinced they will hear us out. "Hopefully, with one of the women being your mate. They may listen, especially when you complete the mate bond." He said I think about it, "She's not ready for that, and I'm not even sure how it would work." Dr. Wood smirk. "Well, when two people get together.." He starts I cut him off, " I know how it is supposed to work, but she's so tiny." Even with all her beautiful curves, I think. "It will work out in that aspect, y'all wouldn't be fated mates if it didn't." He said, and we left it at that. "So when does the council want to meet?" I ask, hoping it wasn't soon. "Tomorrow," He said, I think he looks worried, but I can't tell. Damn it that too soon. "Why so soon?" I ask "They want to get this matter settled as soon as possible." He said understandable, I thought "We have to find a way to make sure they don't do anything rash and get rid of them." I said I don't think I could take it to find my mate that I wasn't supposed to have just to lose her. "Agreed," that's the only thing Dr. Wood said on the matter. "There one more thing." He said with a pause and added, "Amiela is fully healed." I am elated, but I try not to show it. "That's great news." I said, keep my tone neutral. "Yes, but that means Amiela will be discharged soon because we'll need her bed for other patients. I'm going to suggest the hotel down the street but she'll probably want to stay with her sister. So I need you to convince her to go to the hotel at least to get some rest because the chair by her sister won't be comfortable to sleep in." He said, and I agree she'll need her rest. "When will she be discharged?" I ask "I was able to push it to Friday, so four days' time." He said "OK, well, we will cross that bridge when we get to it. Right now, let worry about the council meeting." I say, trying to stay come about facing the council. Dr. Wood just nodded with the same concern on his face. I turned to the door of Amiela room about to go in. I need to book two rooms at the local hotel, conjoining rooms.
